DMN: Les Miles Involved in UTA Football Planning Meetings
VideoEagle replied to Talon90's topic in Mean Green Football
Not to you and I, but we're old. This IS going to be a huge thing in coming years. I heard a talk on esports at a networking breakfast a couple of months ago. The esports SuperBowl last year had several times the total viewers as the NFL' SuperBowl. The NBA is starting their now esports league and the current audience for NBA games on TV is getting old - averaging over 50 - as people in their 20s just don't watch it much and in steadily decreasing numbers. Here's a link to the NBA story. https://www.geekwire.com/2017/nba-create-professional-esports-league-makers-nba-2k-huge-money-maker/ Here's an article from Goldman Sachs on how esports in a major growth investment in years to come because 20 something and younger prefer it to "real" sports in steadily increasing numbers. At the breakfast, the speaker talked about the average NFL viewer is now 55+. Baylor is investing in esports already and is either now or soon going to be offering esports scholarships. I don't get it, but at first I didn't get texting either! https://www.goldmansachs.com/insights/pages/infographics/e-sports/index.html?cid=sch-pd-google-esportshub-searchad-201810-----&mkwid=JoRcjaSG&gclid=Cj0KCQiA3IPgBRCAARIsABb-iGKlv1eYpI45Eilh1UwFfmh5mXIicMBHbwoP_VrefFEzHT93tupjehUaAl7BEALw_wcB -
He certainly didn't endear himself to the rest of the athletic department. Didn't he also say some kind of nasty thing about the Commandant of West Point after he lost a game up there? He didn't have much of a filter on what he'd say.

Who is making those projections?

There were only two convicted of anything. I believe this two were the only ones ever charged with anything, but I could be wrong. One of those never was on the team and I don't think the other played much. That's what made this so stupid, Baylor was doing well without recruiting bad guys. They didn't have to but choose to.

ESPN Loses Another 1.5 Million Subscribers
VideoEagle replied to Cerebus's topic in Mean Green Football
Here's a WSJ article on cable losing another million subscribers in 3Q 2018. It's behind a paywall, but there's a good explanation video you can see without being a subscriber. https://www.wsj.com/articles/outlook-for-traditional-tv-goes-from-bad-to-worse-1542632401 -
From the recap, it appears we were in rhe game till the last 8 minutes.

In 54 years of playing at the major college level, we've had seven 9-win seasons. In 54 years of playing at the major college level, we've had enough sustained success to have only two back to back 9-win seasons. In 54 years of playing at the major college level, we've only ever had a 10-win season with the help of an NCAA imposed forfeit. If we win the bowl game, this will be the most actual wins ever. EVER. @DallasGreen is correct that this could have been an even better season. But he's wrong that this isn't already a special season. It is tied as the most sustained success in the history of the program with a signature win over Arkansas. Next year, we can improve. That doesn't mean this year isn't special.

Obviously, none of it. I don't think Briles believed he was bringing in someone likely to commit sexual assault. He thought it was a kid with a bad temper who claimed he'd learned his lesson and his family was going to provide more emotional support with him closer to home. I do think Briles probably should have dug deeper, but the exgirlfriend was the only one who knew U had assaulted her and wouldn't didn't talk about it till quizzed by the DA already prosecuting U for rape.

I can't find a link to the article, but I remember reading the victim in the Boise beating was brought to Waco to testify in the rape case. She testified about being beaten by Ukwuchu but also testified she had never told anyone in Boise about the beating. She only started opening up about the beating when questioned by the McClendon County DA's office. So, BSU and Peterson didn't know about the beating, just that Ukwuchu had lost his temper and hit a window. The statements actually are all consistent, he was dismissed because of team rules violations and his temper, not because of any violence against a person.

Of the two Baylor players actually convicted of rape, the first had issued made public less than six months after his arrival. The guy from Boise State attacked a girl during his first semester on campus before he was even part of the football team. He never even practiced with the team. The story broke into the news before the end of that Fall semester. The second player convicted was involved in an incident in less than a year, but it took about eight months for that story to break. So yes, a year is enough time for things to start to happen and come out. I don't know if Kendal is recruiting on the edge or not, but so far there's nothing showing he is. I just did a quick google search on FAU players being arrested. No news stories after 2017 about FAU players, although I did notice a UCF player was arrested for rape right before they played this year!

More like Littrell might not want Tech this year if there's a chance of OU within the next couple. I certainly wouldn't blame him! Winning the bowl game means 10 wins in a single season at University/D1/D1A/FBS. Littrell will be the first coach to do that without benefit of a forfeit. To me that would warrant some kind of contract reward and any changes to his contact should include more buy out dollars or a longer buy out period or both. Any buyout NT could get wouldn't deter OU but might make a lessor school think twice.

Has anyone heard.of any problems with the players he coached at either FAU or Houston? You can be certain Baylor came up in his talks with the Texas State AD. I honestly don't know enough to say if Kendal has learnt from the experience, but he had a front row seat to what can go wrong. I remember reading Kendal make a terribly inappropriate comment to a recruit but I don't remember the exact comment. That is clearly bad, but no where near covering up a rape. Since he'd gotten two jobs since then, I hope he realizes there really are things more important than winning football games. If he has, he's got the potential to be a hell of a coach.

Ummm, there are copies of tweets and articles in this thread linking Seth to all the jobs Brett mentioned.

DRC: Littrell press conference/player availability takeaways
VideoEagle replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Very nice! Love the idea of "beat all five Texas opponents." Glad they are coming up with motivations to keep the team focused on this game. -
Not really, at least below the P5 level. The FCS, DII and DIII football playoffs generate very, VERY little as there's not much demand for them on TV.

DRC: Five thoughts on UNT's win over Florida Atlantic
VideoEagle replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Since our return to big time football in 95, winning seasons have been a rare thing. And in the history of the program, 10 wins in a season has only happened once and that season has an asterisk as one of the wins was after a forfeit. Even a nine win season would put this season in the top 15% of all time. And yet, it feels a little disappointing after the incredible start. Still, our players and coaches will deserve congratulations if the season finishes strong. -
We could play Liberty and NMSU twice each year, just like they do trying to fill an independent schedule in the modern era. With no bowls and less TV .
-
Which bowl game is going to be a guessing game, much less who the opponent might be. There are still far too many variables - it's almost like picking lottery numbers! Some things to consider. First, CUSA pools all of the bowl payouts and contributes to schools travel expenses. So there's no advantage in picking a bowl with a higher payout and less disadvantage to travel. I don't think CUSA pays ALL of a schools travel expenses, just the team itself. Secondly, while the conference winner certainly gets first pick, I'm certain CUSA, the bowls and ESPN will be making suggestions. And after the conference winner, everyone else gets to go where CUSA, the bowls and ESPN think will generate the best overall fit. The schools have input into the choices.

If they watched the broadcast one ESPN3, they saw so little of the actual plays they might come anyway!

Yes, usually the ESPN 3 feed is being done by the host school. There are very, VERY rough minimum guidelines from ESPN. -
Kendal Briles -- North Texas Head Coaching Candidate
VideoEagle replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Does Carthel have enough experience with various programs to know and bring in people who can be FBS Coordinators and Assistants? A Head Coach at in an FBS program must have a team of Coordinators and Assistants as the HC can't possibly do everything. There has to be a LOT of delegation at this level and micromanagers can't sustain success. That's my biggest worry about someone who hasn't worked at larger programs.- 187 replies

Seth Littrell has no place in larger conferences
VideoEagle replied to Skipper's topic in Mean Green Football
I wonder if any AD - even our own - will read this! Back in the 90s, I worked with a video supervisor for a truck based out of Universal Studios Orlando. Everyone called this guy "Butter Knife" because he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. I guess his kid is now going to North Texas and writing for the Daily! -
This is the formula for conference success. Look at the best - the SEC. They have Alabama and then usually one, never more than two, other very strong teams and the rest are middle of the road or poor. The B1G has Ohio State and one other most years. When they have multiple good teams and show parity, those are the years they are left out of the play off or before that National Championship picture. The PAC 12 has had parity more years than not since the playoffs began. The years they had a really dominant team, the got in. And the Big XII. When one team is dominate they get in but when they have two or more teams beating each other up they get left out. Just see what happened the TCU and Baylor a few years back - either of them wins one more game and they would have been in.

DRC Monday column: Fine's legacy goes beyond the numbers

"Sometimes it's a fan ranting about what's in the paper." I'd bet USUALLY it's a fan ranting about what's in the paper!
