This was all posted and proven years ago, but just for those who don't remember: 1. WACy would be a media black hole for us NT is in the Central Time Zone. As a result, there is little to no media coverage of late games from the West Coast. That means no local TV and no local newspapers. Some very recent proof is USC-Fresno which got no mention in the Sunday Dallas Morning News. And the first TV mention was slipped in around the Sunday afternoon and evening NFL coverage. This means no media exposure in our prime market, plus our two largest secondary markets Houston and San Antonio. Being Wacy works for schools in Western time zones, but not us. 2. Serious bowl problems The Wacy folks are down to one viable bowl game in Boise, Idaho. The Hawaii Bowl can't survive without Hawaii being the host team - it's been written over and over again for years. You can't get to Boise from Dallas-Ft Worth easily. It is at least one plane change and a whole lot of money. 3. Travel eats all of the money needed to build facilities Again, look at all of the new facilities La Tech has built since they went Wacy. Every member of the SBC has built some new facility in the same time frame. Wouldn't you rather have a new stadium than pay for trips to Hawaii, Boise, Fresno et al? And, no, we have run the numbers over and over - it is impossible to have both! 4. People aren't interested in most Wacy teams While we would get a good crowd for Freno and Boise, most don't care about the others. If they did, then the old Big West would still be around! That's the shortened version for those who were not around when we talked about going Wacy before!
-
No way! No even the slightest possibility of a chance. By the way, the Dallas Morning News today has a little blurb about Fresno getting no respect nationally because they ARE IN THE WAC! Let's not go WACy!
-
Going Wacy is certainly NOT the answer. Just look at La Tech, who's most ardent supporters are acknowledging the school can't continue in the financial Black Hole they are in. However, their administration convinced their fans that going Wacy was going to be their route to salvation and now they can't go back without a huge hit in the fan base. La Tech's finances are fine this year and perhaps next, but then they start to run out of money and most either get into CUSA or the Sunbelt or drop to 1AA or just drop football soon.

And, of course, the primary reason a football players goes to junior college is because he IS NOT eligible for 1A football.
-
Texas Southern? Good summary!
-
Stanford lost to Cal Davis this year. It is embarrassing, but certainly not the end of the world. The bottom of the Mac is clearly worse than the bottom of the Sunbelt. Look at the Wacy conference where they have a number of teams that faired badly in the Sunbelt.

And he has been repeated rejected for consideration at the college level.

6600 to 8800 LB Dually Truck on NEW TRACK?
VideoEagle replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Anyone asked about putting the cannon in the bed of the truck? Or on the trailer behind the truck? -
I think there were not many passes called earlier in the season because they would have very little chance of success. Either our QBs would not get the ball into the right place, or the receivers would be in the wrong spot, or the receivers would just drop the ball. Still, the passes tonight were encouraging. And there were enough passes that when a draw play was called on 3rd and long, it worked since the Indians were respecting the pass play.

Acutally, it does not. Otherwise Joe Greene would have been a coach long ago. Colleges are still about education.

The ULM band is called "The Sound of Today" and played a tribute to the 70s? Scariest part was I could recognize all of the songs, even though the ULM band did not exactly make the music sound it's best.

I think the NT/SMU game is going to be exactly the game coaches hate - the kind of game that gets the loser fired no matter which side he is one!

Allen Ward fires Murray State football coach
VideoEagle replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
No, I'm not happy this year. But I had lunch on Thursday with three guy who were Talons by in the 70s. (That was back before there even WERE female Talons!) All give some money to the school and athletic program but none of the three read message boards. While quite disappointed in this seasons results, all were quite stunned when I told them the fans on the message board were wanting to fire DD. One of the three started telling me about how he'd heard Hayden praising DD and could not believe someone would want to fire DD. The other two starting telling me that from what they had seen, DD was actually doing a better job than Hayden did when he was here - that the football program seemed to be in better shape overall. Their consensus we had a winning record playing "real football" (not 1AA) and who cared if we got clobbered by top BCS teams. I pointed out Tulsa is not a top BCS team, but they still could not believe there were people out to get rid of DD. So when it is written that "fan's don't have confidence in the direction of the program," it is certainly not all fans. Many seem quite happy and are willing to spend money on it! That includes donors at both the $250 and $1000 level! -
What else is any coach going to say? Saying they are anything less than a talented football team just gives them bulletin board material for next year. And it makes whom ever says it look like a jerk!
-
While I certainly don't agree with everything DD does, 1. I've both heard and read a lot of positives DD has said about the fans. Some on this hyper sensitive to any critique. When they heard a criticism a "some" of the fans it is interpreted as a major insult to all fans. 2. Yes he does say the stadium need to be improved. You are seriously disagreeing with this are you? He has also commented on how great the new facilities are. 3. Yes he does. 4. I'm not sure it is all that much more undisciplined that many of our previous coaches. I know at least one year we lead the Big West in penalties. I vividly remember screaming in the stands back when Hayden's teams jumped off sides. Yes, we have way to many penaties and this needs to be fixed.

With regards to both the MAC and the WAC, right now their top teams are significantly better than the top of the Sunbelt. But, based on every rating out there, their bottom teams are worse than ours.
-
That's not what I've heard from some friends who were there at the time. He did lead them to their first ever bowl. And I'm not sure about his being "terrible at throwing the ball" since for a while he was their all time leading passer. Obviously, the team had a winning record the year they went to their first ever bowl. Just think about it - till DD was the QB at K State, NT had been to more bowl games than K State!

Boomer brings bang to campus ... from the NT Daily
VideoEagle replied to ntsumgspe's topic in Mean Green Football
Back at a game in 76 or 77, several friends were on the cannon crew. They rushed things a bit and one guy named Rob Ray didn't swab out the embers well enough. When Tommy went to tap the charge in place, it went off and blew the plunger out past the 40 yardline between the hash marks. Once everyone had a chance to count fingers and hands and be sure no one was hurt, people started laughing about it. Kevin von Eric who was playing in the game was joking about that this year with us at Bill Mercer's roast. -
Lately we've become experts at this problem! Earlier in the thread it was pointed out the old Big West was better than the Mac, with the implication the Mac was then good. The Mac has good teams now, but in the early 90s over half of their conference was in violation of the rules for remaining 1A. The conference had to appeal to the NCAA on their behalf. It took the Mac about 10 years to turn the conference around, but they did it. They still have some teams that are significantly worse than Sunbelt teams, but their top teams are better. Still, they will not place as many teams in bowls this year as they did last year.
-
I'm pretty sure the Ft Worth Bowl was announcing the tickets sold/distributed. I think we switched to BIS count last year. We are still allowed by NCAA to count tickets sold as long as they are sold at a price that falls within certain restrictions. They can't be too deeply discounted.

FLLANIGAN TO LEAVE NT, DON'T KNOW IF NOW
VideoEagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
I would say you are right, except that until Snyder's 2nd or 3rd year, the all time pasing leader at K State was Darrell Dickey! Both of them Quarterbacks. Both of them threw a lot. Darrell passed K State to it's first Bowl game ever in the early 80's - the Independence Bowl. Ramon actually lead the Southwest Conference in passing one year. Yet we still go by Darrell Royal's "When you throw the ball only four things can happen and three of them are bad." I just don't understand. -
You know, when RF was playing Quarterback at SMU, he one of his many years there he was leading PASSER in the old SWC. I'm not sure when this current offense started or why the old one from SMU - pass first, run second - went away.

"So, what do you think of your Mean Green..NOW?!"
VideoEagle replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
You mean he's not? From some of the posts I thought it was his fault, as was the hurricanes and the war in Iraq. -
