You know what thunder sticks are, IMHO? They're the new "Wave". Something for fans who aren't really into the game to amuse themselves with. (kind of like morons who still start the "Wave" at sporting events. I guess we never have enough students for this.......but I love when student sections do that thing where they all bounce up and down at the same time. (Is that called anything?)

Trust me on this, that post wasn't worth being posted ONCE, much less TWICE.

Jeff....I looked that up the other day. When you take away his 8 wins over NAIA and Division II schools, JJ"s record is a sparkling: 41-64 And if you break down those 41 wins......not a lot of Division I "big names" on that list either.

JONESBORO, Ark. — For one program, it was a first. For another, it marked the first time in a while. The University of North Texas women’s track and field squad won its first Sun Belt Conference Indoor title on Monday, as the Mean Green took top honors at the Aéropostale Sun Belt Championships at Arkansas State’s Convocation Center. South Alabama, meanwhile, took first place on the men’s side, marking the Jaguars’ first indoor title since 1994. The two programs took home a lot of hardware. NT’s Rhonda Williams was one of three standouts selected as Outstanding Field Performers. Florida International’s Elisa Dieme-Erlich and Western Kentucky’s Courtney Wood joined Williams in the field honors. Mean Green head coach Rick Watkins, meanwhile, was named the Women’s Coach of the Year. North Texas narrowly defeated Western Kentucky. The Mean Green tallied 111 points, compared to 108 ½ by the Hilltoppers. Middle Tennessee, the four-time defending champion, finished third. On the men’s side, USA head coach Lee Evans was named Coach of the Year, while Tonny Okello was named Outstanding Track Performer after he earned top scoring honors. The Jaguars recorded 138 points, 14 ahead of second-place Arkansas State. Four-time defending indoor champion Middle Tennessee finished third. Complete results from Sunday action can be found on the Sun Belt Conference website at http://indoortrack.sunbeltsports.org/x/article/3652.

I have to side with our younger fans on this one. All they are trying to do, is to encourage fans to attend home basketball games. Is that such a sin? I do realize that on this board, any encouragement of fans to get involved (attend games of different sports, join the Mean Green Club) is looked upon as being judgemental. Only at North Texas, would that be judgemental. If you don't like basketball.....that's fine. But then, don't post your thoughts on a basketball board discussing basketball issues. You should leave those discussions to those who do love the game. Man cannot live on bread alone. And this particular man, needs more than football.

That'd be pretty hard to do since every team makes the tournament.

Great post.

What I meant Gang Green....is that they were out of timeouts (after having called that one before the inbounds play). And because of that, if we had guarded their players well, to where he didn't have anyone open to throw to......the player inbounding the ball couldn't call a timeout. Sorry if I wasn't clear what I meant there.
-
One other thing about the inbounds situation.....they had to get it in....because they were out of timeouts. Also, if you're not going to guard the inbounds....you would think two guys would have been on Winchester (who had 33 before hitting the winning 3 pointer). Their other best scorer had fouled out (Lee--that great freshman of theirs). Did we have two guys on Winchester....when he hit that shot???
-
The trouble is....since it looks like we'll finish 4th or worse in the Western Division....we won't get a bye in the first round of the SBC tournament. That's a killer. We'd have to win four games to win the tournament instead of three. That extra game can kill you when you've played one more than your opponent in the semi-finals or finals of the tournament. Your guys are just too tired to win at that point.
-
The final was 93-92, btw. I listened to the game...I guess maybe you got it on televison back in Bowling Green...right GE &H? I had no idea that we didn't guard the inbounds pass. For those who don't know, we go up 92-90 with 3 seconds left.....and let them get the ball in (unguarded I now gather).....to a point guard who gets the ball to their hottest player (the guy had 33 b-4 the final three). You are definitely right....that inbounds pass needed to be guarded.
-
Unbelievable. Our team played great tonight, but just couldn't hang on, losing on a three point shot at the buzzer....93-92. We lead throughout the contest.....were up by 25 in the 1st half.....lead 43-36 at the half. Our guys extended the lead to double digits in the 2nd half.....but WKU came back and won by 1. Mean Green now 11-11, 4-7 in conference.

Thanks for the sermon. When is the offering going to be taken up?

If being stuck with Trilli's players is such an awful thing....how come JJ's best year (yet) was his first team? (which had all Trilli players except for Jermaine Green and Lee Green, I think). This team got me excited early in the year. The wins over Lamar and UNC-W at home....were quality wins. But, in conference we have been abysmal. We are 2-5 in our last 7 games. Looking ahead....I see us losing to ULL (road game); Denver and WKU (home games). We'll probably beat S Bama, UNO and UT-Peanut Butter. (all at home) If that's the case....we'd be 14-13 for the regular season, a season in which we had 15 home games, and a lot of cupcakes on the schedule. Also, if that scenario works out, we'd finish 6-9 in conference. I don't know if 6-9 in the West Division will be enough for us to be the #3 seed or not. If we're not the #3 seed, we'd have to win 4 games to win the SBC tourney, not three. Anyway, this team can turn it around. Beating ULL, WKU or Denver would be big starts toward that. I hope we can do it. GMG!

It was an away game, so I can't tell how they looked. But listening to it....it sure seemed like they were uninspired. I mean, when you have turnovers on 4 of your first 5 possessions........doesn't seem to me like the kids' heads are in the game. Does it to you? We didn't get a field goal until the 11:20 mark of the first half. Once we got down 19-1.....we did make a run and brought it back to 19-12......but then they went on another run.......and they toyed with us the rest of the game (lead anywhere from 13-20 or so).
-
Down 19-1 at the start of the game. Does JJ know how to get a team ready to start a game? It doesn't seem like it. Tons of turnovers. 4 of our first 5 possessions we had turnovers. This is a team that isn't going anywhere right now. Final: MT 79 UNT 64 And trust me on this....it wasn't as close as the final score indicates.
-
Well, the upper deck ....will probably be pretty empty next Monday. You and she could join the stadium equivalent of "The Mile High Club"....if you wanted to.

Yeah he had a minor injury (I think it was his wrist) that kept him out of the lineup. But, he's supposed to be back tonight.

Baseball Preview
SUMG replied to Coach's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I love the Astros as much as I do the Rangers (because the Stros were around when I was a kid; Rangers didn't get here 'til I was 15). So, last year was a blast (finally seeing a Texas team win a baseball playoff series). Chris Burke will be a key to this team's success. He hit well at AAA (.315, 16 homers; also 37 SBs). A guy that I would love to see make the Astros team: speedy center fielder Willy Tavares. I'd love to see Tavares, Biggio and Lane in the OF, until Lance comes back. Starting Orlando Palmeiro does nothing for me. I agree that the Cardinals are the team to beat. My longshot darkhorse for the NL Central: Milwaukee. Doug Melvin is a genius at finding good talent cheaply (i.e. Doug Davis and Danny Kolb, both of whom should still be with the Rangers). Also, Milwaukee has maybe the most talent ready to blossom out of the minor leagues....of any team in baseball). -
Actually, I figured the Blue Raiders might even be bigger favorites than that (12 or so). It'll be really tough for us to win up there tonight. But, I feel that our team, if they put it together can beat any other team in the league. Conversely though, I feel on nights where we don't have it going on, we could lose to any other team in the league. A win tonight would be a huge upset. GMGBTHOOMTSU!

I disagree with you on that, gk. I think anyone who lives in Denton would know about that sign......and I would think many who ever lived in Denton would remember it. The company is Morrison's, btw.
-
This is probably one of the stupidest ideas I've ever had, but don't worry I'll top it eventually. Anyway, since the game is in Denton.....four signs that are held up in a rotation (one at a time); First one reads.........Corn-Kits Second one reads.......Bis-Kits Third One Reads........Pan-Kits Fourth One Reads.......Bas-Kets

For the 39th consecutive year, they played the Super Bowl; for the 39th consecutive year, I watched it. There was the usual array of quirky commercials, replay reversals and ex-presidents, and, in the end, the New England Patriots established themselves as the most unlikely dynasty since the Van Patten clan ran roughshod over Hollywood in the mid 1980s. Anyway, I took notes. 1:25 p.m.: If I knew Tim McCarver was going to show up on Super Bowl Sunday, I would've watched Kung Pow: Enter the Fist on FX instead. 1:42: Here's the thing about Terry Bradshaw: In the 17th century, he might have been the village idiot; in the 21st century, he's a potential running mate for Hillary Clinton. 1:57: Frankly, Kelly Clarkson on that pregame stage didn't exactly give me that Beatles-on-the-Ed Sullivan Show feel. 2:33: We get a preview of the upcoming Fox Soccer Channel. Thanks for the warning. 3:59: They just ran a Heineken commercial that scared me more than Apocalypse Now. 4:13: At my MLS Cup party, I remember drinking too much Yoo-hoo. 4:38: Bill Belichick swears by Sun Tzu's treatise The Art of War. Couch Slouch swears by Gallagher's concert film, Gallagher — Melon Crazy. 5:31: If they wait any longer until kickoff, the NHL season might even start. 5:34: We probably could fix Social Security for less money than we spend on the Super Bowl coin toss. 5:38: To be honest, I wouldn't have been surprised to see Terrell Owens playing if he were in a body cast. 5:46: My neighbor says I make too much noise when I'm watching football. Yeah, like she doesn't shout during Iron Chef. 6:16: One of my ex-wives calls in the second quarter. Of the Super Bowl. Needless to say, this is one of the reasons she is one of my ex-wives. 6:17: By the way, the next time I'm married, I'm including the TV Guide subscription in the pre-nup. 6:22: Best I can tell, we are a nation of Taco Bells, Pizza Huts and Subways. I'm not sure this is what the framers of the constitution had in mind. 6:39: If I promise to watch every show Fox promotes, will Fox promise to stop showing me the promos? 6:41: Man, Cris Collinsworth sure can yap it up. 6:41:30: You know, but I discovered a long time ago — you put a nut in front of a squirrel, he eats it; you put a microphone in front of a broadcaster, he talks into it. 6:48: Actually, I thought Freddie Mitchell looked pretty good in warmups. 6:52: If Belichick's a genius, how come he can't wear a headset right? 6:58: Hey, careerbuilder.com — let's see what you can do with my résumé and references. 7:20: When they introduce "Sir" Paul McCartney at halftime, my Super Bowl guests — the Captain and Tennille — openly snicker. 7:46: With 11:26 to go in Super Bowl XIV, Vince Ferragamo threw an incomplete on third-and-8. It remains the only play in Super Bowl history I have missed. 7:54: Sure, Tom Brady has his Super Bowl rings, the actress girlfriend and movie-star looks. I have TiVo. 8:25: Nothing personal against Robert Kraft, but I hate seeing rich people high-five. 8:53: Is it possible the Eagles left their no-huddle offense at the hotel? 9:15: If you look up "uphill" in the dictionary, you'll see a photo of the Eagles on their 4-yard line with 46 seconds left and no timeouts, trailing New England by three. 9:16: Just think — if the Patriots had been around in the 1400s, they might have given the Ming a run for its money. Ask the Slouch Q: Do you believe Phil Jackson will return to coach the Lakers? BENJAMIN FRANK Amsterdam, N.Y. A: I believe Phil Jackson will relocate to Nepal, live in a straw duplex hut and open a holistic hardware store before he returns to coach the Lakers. Q: With the increase in injuries to players hit in the face with penalty markers, do you think it would be a good idea for the NFL to switch from yellow flags to lemon meringue pies? TERRY KANE Ravenna, Ohio A: Pay the man, Shirley. You, too, can enter the $1.25 Ask The Slouch Cash Giveaway. Just e-mail asktheslouch@aol.com and, if your question is used, you win $1.25.

I believe that Hank said tonight, that Isaac only has 27 turnovers for the season. For a point guard, that is 20 games into the season.....that is phenomenal.

Very good. Talon 90 knows his stuff. BTW....I'm not sure how long they dated, but I have been told that our Ms. Slinker did date Randy White, at one time. As a matter of fact, Randy was at one of our women's games one time, was seated right behind me.......and I didn't even know he was there. (until afterwards when a friend told me that Randy White was right behind us). BTW.....I sensed that some of you guessers, were mocking The NT Women's B-Ball Trivia Game. I really do. And all I can say, you'll have to answer at the Pearly Gates for that.....so hopefully that won't be held against you. That's all I'm gonna say about that, mockers. But I will say, Crazy Ray was a better guess than Nate Newton or Rafael Septien. Talon 90......I really didn't plan on giving a gift away. But, if you can arrange for the shipping....I'll send you one of my kidneys. Seriously, since I live out of town.....I would be more than willing to give you a free b-ball ticket to a game that I won't be able to attend. PM me if you want it. (It would probably be to a Thursday night game).
