  1. Another thing to consider, when it comes to Howerton and Mangrum: They have both done extremely well in summer league competition, where they go up against great 4A and 5A talent from Texas, as well as top level talent from many other states. Also, A & M coach Billy Gillespie wanted to sign Howerton and I know that Gillespie is a great judge of talent.
  2. (All three of these ladies have very impressive credentials. Story from meangreensports.com): DENTON (5/16/05) -- North Texas women’s tennis head coach Dawna Prevette has announced that Tyler Junior College standout Ina Wieding has signed a National Letter of Intent to play with the Mean Green next season. Originally from Willich, Germany, Wieding has played No. 1 singles for the Apaches the last two seasons and earned All-America recognition. She recently led the Apaches to the NJCAA Division I national championship and was 18-5 in singles during the 2005 season at the time of her signing. Wieding was ranked No. 4 in the nation in the 2004 Fall NJCAA Division I ITA rankings and Tyler Junior College was No. 2 in the team rankings after finishing third in the nation the previous season. "I am very excited about Ina coming to North Texas," said Prevette. "She has a complete game and I expect her to play at the top of our lineup. She will bring maturity to our team as well and I think she is going to be a huge asset next season." One of the premier junior college players in the country, Wieding finished her freshman season ranked No. 2 in the final NJCAA ITA rankings. Wieding achieved a 161 ranking among all adults in Germany before joining the TJC women’s tennis team. She won regionals in juniors four years in a row and was an adults doubles regional champion. She also finished in the final in adult singles in 2001. North Texas wrapped up its 2005 signing class, which also includes Lynley Wasson of Tempe, Ariz., and Samantha Moreton of Winchester, England. Both players inked with North Texas in the early signing period. Since Wasson signed with the Mean Green, she has gone on to win her third consecutive Arizona 5A state championship and was recently featured on the cover of School Sports magazine. Moreton started playing tennis when she was seven and participated in a national tournament in Wimbledon after being named the best player in her country. Moreton attends Kings School and was the team captain for both tennis and basketball. The signing of the three key additions will play a part in the tennis program’s growing success. Not only has North Texas registered double-figure wins each of the last four seasons for the first time in school history, it is in the process of building a new multi-court facility.
  3. Joel's bad back last year, kept him out of so many tournaments that he didn't automatically qualify for the PGA Tour this year. He went to PGA Qualifying School (a 5 round tournament) and barely missed qualifying for the PGA Tour that way. So, as of now, he and another UNT alum, Keoke Cotner, play on the second level of pro golf, The Nationwide Tour. The Nationwide Tour's next tourney is in two weeks. And the guys who finish in the top 15 on the Nationwide Tour in money earnings for the year.....they automatically qualify for the PGA Tour the next year.
  4. Mark Aguirre. Blakely. Moron.
  5. Howe lost 57-47, btw. Justin ended up with 13 pts. and 9 boards. He had two fouls at the end of the 1st quarter (ended up with four).....so I don't know if that kept him out of the game a lot....or not. Anyway, nice high school career for Justin. Let's hope he has a great college career.
  6. You can see how Justin Howerton (and the rest of the Howe team) are doing by going to this site: http://www.uil.utexas.edu/ath/basketball/s...boys_index.html Click on scoreboard....it will give you an up to the minute score, as well as play-by-play (written, not audio). Justin had the first basket of the game, and a block while I was over there.... Good luck to this future Mean Green player.
  7. First of all, it is the current A & M coach, who was once at UTEP......that we had the chance to get. (Not the current A & M and UTEP coaches). Secondly, A & M and UTEP weren't stacked with talented players when Gillespie got to either place. Thirdly, do you honestly think SBC basketball and Big 12 are comparable? I mean, it would seem to me, that it would be a heckuva lot easier to win in the SBC, than in the Big 12. Gillespie has done more in his first year in Aggieland, than JJ has done in four years at UNT. And one more time....so maybe it will sink through....if the program was so decimated when Trilli left......how come JJ's best record was his first year at UNT? Explain that one. And when you've got time, you and GK Smith need to get together. Y'all have a lot in common.
  8. I voted for Other. And, I mean this in all seriousness..... My MVPs for the 2004-2005 season: The guys who founded The Pit Crew. I think they have started a great, new spirit group.....which hopefully will be around for many years. If I had to pick a player, I'd go with Oh! J. Simpson.
  9. There are a lot of great b-ball players who leave the state.....but there are also a lot of great ones who stay. Just proof that it's not that bad of a year for college basketball in Texas.....these are some of the records of some of our other Texas universities: Texas Tech 18-9 Texas 20-9 A & M 19-8 TCU 19-12 Houston 18-13 Sam Houston State 18-11 Lamar 18-10 Rice 18-10 UTEP 24-7 And many of those schools have conference tournament games left.....thus increasing their chances of getting to 20-win seasons. So, Texas will be well represented in both the NCAA and NIT.........
  10. If those records seem off by a game or two, it's because RPI doesn't count games against Div. II or NAIA teams...
  11. GK.....has anyone talked to you about "assisted living"? It's time.
  12. You know what thunder sticks are, IMHO? They're the new "Wave". Something for fans who aren't really into the game to amuse themselves with. (kind of like morons who still start the "Wave" at sporting events. I guess we never have enough students for this.......but I love when student sections do that thing where they all bounce up and down at the same time. (Is that called anything?)
  13. Trust me on this, that post wasn't worth being posted ONCE, much less TWICE.
  14. Jeff....I looked that up the other day. When you take away his 8 wins over NAIA and Division II schools, JJ"s record is a sparkling: 41-64 And if you break down those 41 wins......not a lot of Division I "big names" on that list either.
  15. JONESBORO, Ark. — For one program, it was a first. For another, it marked the first time in a while. The University of North Texas women’s track and field squad won its first Sun Belt Conference Indoor title on Monday, as the Mean Green took top honors at the Aéropostale Sun Belt Championships at Arkansas State’s Convocation Center. South Alabama, meanwhile, took first place on the men’s side, marking the Jaguars’ first indoor title since 1994. The two programs took home a lot of hardware. NT’s Rhonda Williams was one of three standouts selected as Outstanding Field Performers. Florida International’s Elisa Dieme-Erlich and Western Kentucky’s Courtney Wood joined Williams in the field honors. Mean Green head coach Rick Watkins, meanwhile, was named the Women’s Coach of the Year. North Texas narrowly defeated Western Kentucky. The Mean Green tallied 111 points, compared to 108 ½ by the Hilltoppers. Middle Tennessee, the four-time defending champion, finished third. On the men’s side, USA head coach Lee Evans was named Coach of the Year, while Tonny Okello was named Outstanding Track Performer after he earned top scoring honors. The Jaguars recorded 138 points, 14 ahead of second-place Arkansas State. Four-time defending indoor champion Middle Tennessee finished third. Complete results from Sunday action can be found on the Sun Belt Conference website at http://indoortrack.sunbeltsports.org/x/article/3652.
  16. I have to side with our younger fans on this one. All they are trying to do, is to encourage fans to attend home basketball games. Is that such a sin? I do realize that on this board, any encouragement of fans to get involved (attend games of different sports, join the Mean Green Club) is looked upon as being judgemental. Only at North Texas, would that be judgemental. If you don't like basketball.....that's fine. But then, don't post your thoughts on a basketball board discussing basketball issues. You should leave those discussions to those who do love the game. Man cannot live on bread alone. And this particular man, needs more than football.
  17. That'd be pretty hard to do since every team makes the tournament.
  18. Great post.
  19. What I meant Gang Green....is that they were out of timeouts (after having called that one before the inbounds play). And because of that, if we had guarded their players well, to where he didn't have anyone open to throw to......the player inbounding the ball couldn't call a timeout. Sorry if I wasn't clear what I meant there.
  20. One other thing about the inbounds situation.....they had to get it in....because they were out of timeouts. Also, if you're not going to guard the inbounds....you would think two guys would have been on Winchester (who had 33 before hitting the winning 3 pointer). Their other best scorer had fouled out (Lee--that great freshman of theirs). Did we have two guys on Winchester....when he hit that shot???
  21. The trouble is....since it looks like we'll finish 4th or worse in the Western Division....we won't get a bye in the first round of the SBC tournament. That's a killer. We'd have to win four games to win the tournament instead of three. That extra game can kill you when you've played one more than your opponent in the semi-finals or finals of the tournament. Your guys are just too tired to win at that point.
  22. The final was 93-92, btw. I listened to the game...I guess maybe you got it on televison back in Bowling Green...right GE &H? I had no idea that we didn't guard the inbounds pass. For those who don't know, we go up 92-90 with 3 seconds left.....and let them get the ball in (unguarded I now gather).....to a point guard who gets the ball to their hottest player (the guy had 33 b-4 the final three). You are definitely right....that inbounds pass needed to be guarded.
  23. Unbelievable. Our team played great tonight, but just couldn't hang on, losing on a three point shot at the buzzer....93-92. We lead throughout the contest.....were up by 25 in the 1st half.....lead 43-36 at the half. Our guys extended the lead to double digits in the 2nd half.....but WKU came back and won by 1. Mean Green now 11-11, 4-7 in conference.
  24. Thanks for the sermon. When is the offering going to be taken up?
  25. If being stuck with Trilli's players is such an awful thing....how come JJ's best year (yet) was his first team? (which had all Trilli players except for Jermaine Green and Lee Green, I think). This team got me excited early in the year. The wins over Lamar and UNC-W at home....were quality wins. But, in conference we have been abysmal. We are 2-5 in our last 7 games. Looking ahead....I see us losing to ULL (road game); Denver and WKU (home games). We'll probably beat S Bama, UNO and UT-Peanut Butter. (all at home) If that's the case....we'd be 14-13 for the regular season, a season in which we had 15 home games, and a lot of cupcakes on the schedule. Also, if that scenario works out, we'd finish 6-9 in conference. I don't know if 6-9 in the West Division will be enough for us to be the #3 seed or not. If we're not the #3 seed, we'd have to win 4 games to win the SBC tourney, not three. Anyway, this team can turn it around. Beating ULL, WKU or Denver would be big starts toward that. I hope we can do it. GMG!
