I thought he stayed with us, for four years. But according to the Media Guide, he only earned letters in '78 and '79. I don't remember him transferring to SMU, but you may be right. As for his little brother....we had a Darrin Collins who played at NT in the mid-late 80s. Darrin, as I recall, was from Carthage (in Northeast Texas). Not sure if he and Milton were related or not.

He wasn't on the Oklahoma roster, which was in the DMN this morning. Is he playing??????

There's a report in today's DMN, that Matt Pinto may get the Lakers' radio play-by-play job. If that happens, and I hope it DOES.......I sure hope Cuban moves our alum, Mark Followill.........to the TV booth.

It was 1978........we signed the #1 running back in Texas, Milton Collins (from Blooming Grove). He was that year's Eric Dickerson or Adrian Peterson. He was the top running back in the state. If there had been National 100 lists (like Rivals) back then, Milton would have been on it. Back then, players could sign conference letters of intent in the SWC. (They signed those a week before National letters of intent were signed.) What those conference letters of intent did......once a player signed one of those, no one else in the conference could sign the kid. But, teams that weren't in the SWC, could sign a player to a National letter of intent, which overrode a conference letter. Milton had signed a SWC letter of intent with A $ M. Well, Hayden went in, and stole Milton from them. I'll never forget the coverage we got for that. Channel 4 (then CBS) showed Hayden arriving at the Collins' family house on signing date. As I recall, it had snowed that morning, so Hayden was shown there, wiping his feet off, as he entered the Collins' house. Unfortunately though, Milton was never the stud in college, that he was in high school. I guess, in his case, going from 1A or 2A (whatever Blooming Grove was) was too much of a jump up in talent. I don't think he ever ran for even 300 yards (or more) in any season. As a matter of fact, toward the end of his career, he was switched to D Line. And, as I recall.....he also did our kickoffs one season. One more thing about Milton. Bless his heart, he may have had a tough life......because he was the oldest looking 18 year old, I have ever seen, before or since. He looked at least 30. But for a while.......signing date and the months afterward....his signing gave us a lot to crow about. Too bad his UNT career wasn't a little better.

Explain this to me: "Massaro has signed a letter of understanding with the ACC and the Mid-American Conference to play either on Sept. 22 or Oct. 6 of 2007. " Why would the letter of understanding be between the ACC and the MAC?

Well....you must be talking about Josh Gulley in '95. Josh played well in that Bama game (we only lost 38-19; very respectable)....but he threw for 183 yards, not 500. The next week, however, he did throw for 422 yards against UNLV. Is that who you're thinking of?????

1. Ah hell, what was that guy's name? He was the ticket manager 3-4 managers ago. Nice kid. Helped me out when they screwed up my season tickets. 2. Ah heck, that lady that was ticket manager back for about 6 months back in '82. Can't remember her name. She helped me out once, when they screwed up my season tickets. 3. That old guy who was always really friendly when you went in to buy tickets. He was probably about 10-11 ticket managers ago.......so this probably goes all the way back to '99 or so. 4. The current guy. Nice kid. 5. The Siamese twins who were our ticket manager back in '84. The one was really nice, even though his twin obviously didn't want to work there. The nice one once helped me out, when there was a screw up with my season tickets. 6. The deaf and dumb mute who was our ticket manager back in '88. Really nice guy. It is because of him, that I now know sign language for, "Say, what happened to my season tickets?" 7. Oh, that guy.....5-6 ticket managers ago. Will always be a saint in my book, because he moved PMG out of my section. Thank you, whatever the heck your name was. That's just a short list.

Here are my top 10: 1. Jordan Case---He was so good in '78. It was sad to see what Jerry Moore and his coaches did to Jordan and Bernard Jackson during '79 season. 2. Kenny Washington 3. Mitch Maher 4. Scott Davis 5. Joe Stevenson 6. Greg Carter (very underrated; lead us to our first 1-AA playoff berth in '83) 7. Andrew Smith (First bowl win since 1947 or so. ) 8. Kenny Smith (great backup during Kenny Washington era) 9. Glen Ray (another backup; makes list for leading us to win over Tennessee in '75) 10. Scott Hall (was a good QB; will always think he might have been a great safety)

I may be taking this the wrong way, but it almost seems like the guy is asking if we'd like to join the MWC. I infer that from his comment "North Texas would be a good travel with TCU." It seems like he's calling us a travel partner for TCU (which wouldn't pertain to football anyway). Anyway, as far as a OOC series with UNM (if that's what the guy means)......I'm all for it. In 1982, we had "upset" the 1-A Lobos at Fouts...... PMG and I were so thrilled, that 1-AA NT had upset a 1-A team. Anyway, we had scored the "winning" touchdown with about 30 seconds left to go ahead 17-14 (I think). Anyway, by the time Plummster and I had gotten down from our upper deck seats to the concourse, UNM had scored and taken the victory away from us, 20-17. That was homecoming in '82.

WTF? We've never played Holy Cross in football. How was there a brewing rivalry between us and them? I've never heard of this. Please explain, EE.

MG 61....I have every one of those polls in a scrapbook. I guess we made the UPI poll the last 7-8 weeks of that season, as I recall. The highest we got in that poll that year....was 13th.

I beg to differ. I don't think beating KSU would put us in the top 25. K State isn't in anyone's top 25. Most mags have them as the 3rd-4th best team in the weak Big 12 North. Their first two games (before us) are FIU and Marshall. So, KSU isn't gonna be anywhere near the top 25 themselves before we play them. So how exactly would beating KSU put us in the top 25? Now upsetting LSU.....would definitely put us in there. And btw......we were in the top 25 before. (In 1977....reaching as high as 13th.....finishing 16th in the UPI poll).

Yeah, Lifer's right. Brian started out as a TE......was a pretty good TE. As a matter of fact, after three years, he was on course to break Luis Silva's all-time receptions record for a TE. Well, then DD was hired. DD and his staff turned Brian into a two-way player, playing him at DT and TE. And even though Brian only needed 10 receptions his senior year to break the aforementioned record, he never had a chance. (As Dickey and his OC never threw to the TE that year). So, Brian is great in the NFL.......but he wasn't an O Lineman at NT. And at the positions he played (TE and DT), he wasn't good enough to beat out others on this list, IMHO.

Another thing to consider, when it comes to Howerton and Mangrum: They have both done extremely well in summer league competition, where they go up against great 4A and 5A talent from Texas, as well as top level talent from many other states. Also, A & M coach Billy Gillespie wanted to sign Howerton and I know that Gillespie is a great judge of talent.

Story from meangreensports.com): DENTON (5/16/05) -- North Texas women’s tennis head coach Dawna Prevette has announced that Tyler Junior College standout Ina Wieding has signed a National Letter of Intent to play with the Mean Green next season. Originally from Willich, Germany, Wieding has played No. 1 singles for the Apaches the last two seasons and earned All-America recognition. She recently led the Apaches to the NJCAA Division I national championship and was 18-5 in singles during the 2005 season at the time of her signing. Wieding was ranked No. 4 in the nation in the 2004 Fall NJCAA Division I ITA rankings and Tyler Junior College was No. 2 in the team rankings after finishing third in the nation the previous season. "I am very excited about Ina coming to North Texas," said Prevette. "She has a complete game and I expect her to play at the top of our lineup. She will bring maturity to our team as well and I think she is going to be a huge asset next season." One of the premier junior college players in the country, Wieding finished her freshman season ranked No. 2 in the final NJCAA ITA rankings. Wieding achieved a 161 ranking among all adults in Germany before joining the TJC women’s tennis team. She won regionals in juniors four years in a row and was an adults doubles regional champion. She also finished in the final in adult singles in 2001. North Texas wrapped up its 2005 signing class, which also includes Lynley Wasson of Tempe, Ariz., and Samantha Moreton of Winchester, England. Both players inked with North Texas in the early signing period. Since Wasson signed with the Mean Green, she has gone on to win her third consecutive Arizona 5A state championship and was recently featured on the cover of School Sports magazine. Moreton started playing tennis when she was seven and participated in a national tournament in Wimbledon after being named the best player in her country. Moreton attends Kings School and was the team captain for both tennis and basketball. The signing of the three key additions will play a part in the tennis program’s growing success. Not only has North Texas registered double-figure wins each of the last four seasons for the first time in school history, it is in the process of building a new multi-court facility.

Joel's bad back last year, kept him out of so many tournaments that he didn't automatically qualify for the PGA Tour this year. He went to PGA Qualifying School (a 5 round tournament) and barely missed qualifying for the PGA Tour that way. So, as of now, he and another UNT alum, Keoke Cotner, play on the second level of pro golf, The Nationwide Tour. The Nationwide Tour's next tourney is in two weeks. And the guys who finish in the top 15 on the Nationwide Tour in money earnings for the year.....they automatically qualify for the PGA Tour the next year.

Howe lost 57-47, btw. Justin ended up with 13 pts. and 9 boards. He had two fouls at the end of the 1st quarter (ended up with four).....so I don't know if that kept him out of the game a lot....or not. Anyway, nice high school career for Justin. Let's hope he has a great college career.

First of all, it is the current A & M coach, who was once at UTEP......that we had the chance to get. (Not the current A & M and UTEP coaches). Secondly, A & M and UTEP weren't stacked with talented players when Gillespie got to either place. Thirdly, do you honestly think SBC basketball and Big 12 are comparable? I mean, it would seem to me, that it would be a heckuva lot easier to win in the SBC, than in the Big 12. Gillespie has done more in his first year in Aggieland, than JJ has done in four years at UNT. And one more time....so maybe it will sink through....if the program was so decimated when Trilli left......how come JJ's best record was his first year at UNT? Explain that one. And when you've got time, you and GK Smith need to get together. Y'all have a lot in common.
