Watched Necessary Roughness last night
SUMG replied to Mean'n'Green07's topic in Mean Green Football
It was done very cheaply, as I recall. We got those 10,000 seats for less than $700,000 grand. And the reason they were done that way....was because of the track. Back then, you had to have the 30,000 seat stadium, and the powers that be did what they could, to get us there. And those seats aren't that bad, if you have binoculars that are as powerful as the Hubble Telescope. -
Our team has a good record at this point...and some wins over some nice teams (Charlotte, Tulsa---which beat ORU who had beaten Kansas; and Rice). But like NDT......I'll be cautiously optimistic. We have a very weak schedule. Other than WKU....we don't play another good team in December. Nicholls, Jarvis Christian and Bellhaven......are all patsies. Denver and New Orleans are lousy this year....so WKU is our only good team on the schedule for a while. So, we should continue to rack up some wins, and have a nice record. Remember this.....Tina was 12-2 at one point last year. Hey our men, were 12-6 at one point last year, as well. So, I can definitely see where NDT is coming from, and agree with a lot of what he has to say on this. And would add that.....a pretty record isn't gonna mean #### if we don't see postseason action of some kind (NIT or NCAA). And postseason action, SHOULD BE EXPECTED in a coach's 6th year (if he hadn't already been there, before).

Matt had been the RB coach at Washington for about 10 years. But, when we hired him, he was the OC at New Mexico. I think he was there for 2 years, under Dennis Franchione. So, he didn't come here directly from being a RB coach....he had been a OC.

16-39.................... but it's not that close.

Correction....he was most recently on Miami's staff, having left ULM after the 2005 season. Here's more on him: Coral Gables - - University of Miami head coach Larry Coker today added Todd Berry to the football coaching staff. Berry comes to UM from Louisiana-Monroe, where he was the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for the last two years. He has also been the head coach at Illinois State and Army. Berry, 45, will coach the UM quarterbacks, including Kyle Wright, who led the ACC in touchdown passes in 2005, his first year as a starter. "Todd Berry is an outstanding football coach," said Coker, "He is a great teacher of fundamentals, and he has a strong belief in an attacking, explosive style of offense. Without question he will help our offense move forward. Todd has turned down opportunities to coach in the NFL, so we're pleased to have him as part of our offensive staff." Berry said, "It's a great honor to be at the University of Miami, which is nationally known as an top academic institution and is in a city such as Miami, which is so cosmopolitan and diverse. The football program has such a wonderful history and a bright future. I'll also be working for a man whom people have tremendous respect for as both a coach and a person." Charlie Weatherbie, the head coach at Louisiana-Monroe, said of Berry, "Todd Berry is as good a football coach as I have been around. He is very smart when it come to football Xs and Os. He is very good with people and is an intelligent football coach. Todd is the total package. Todd is very special to ULM. He has been instrumental in bringing our program a long way over the past two seasons, to the point that we earned a share of the Sun Belt championship. We are excited for him and his family. I wish we could have kept him around longer." At Louisiana-Monroe in 2005, Berry coached an offense that was third in total offense and first in passing in the Sun Belt Conference. The Indians won the conference title, and he tutored QB Steven Jyles, the conference's Player of the Year who re-wrote the school and conference football records book in the passing and total offense categories. The Indians threw 405 passes in 2005 and were sacked just nine times (once by Georgia and two times by Arkansas). Berry was the head coach at Army from 2000 to midway through the 2003 season. His teams set 25 academy records at Army. Berry was the head coach at Illinois State from 1996-99, presiding over one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Division I-AA history. The team had not won a conference title since 1950, but under Berry the Redbirds advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs in his third season and finished in the I-AA top 20. The following year, ISU was undefeated in the conference and advanced to the I-AA semifinals. Berry was a semifinalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award in both 1998 and 1999. His teams set more than 100 records during his four seasons as head coach, and he compiled a record of 19-7 his last two seasons. Berry was offensive coordinator at East Carolina from 1992-95, and the Pirates went to the Liberty Bowl his last two seasons. He was the offensive coordinator at Southeast Missouri State in 1991, receivers coach at Mississippi State in 1989 and 1990, and offensive coordinator at Tennessee-Martin from 1986-88. UT-M finished in the top five in passing offense, total offense and scoring offense. Berry was a graduate assistant at Tennessee (1983) and Oklahoma State (1985), as well as the receivers coach at Tulsa (1984). A native of Miami, Okla., Berry played quarterback at Tulsa from 1979 to 1980 before a knee injury ended his playing career. He and his wife, Lisa, have two daughters, Jordan and Ryleigh.

Try selling UNT fans on the fact that you've just hired ULM's offensive coordinator. And try selling them on a guy who was 5-35 his last 40 games, while head coach at Army. Tough sell. He was a great 1-AA coach though.

Now, I'm not so sure we're going to be able to see it down here. I found this on the Huskers' website today: Lincoln --- The Nebraska men’s basketball team will play at least 18 games on television this season, including 10 telecasts on FSN Midwest throughout the state of Nebraska. All games on FSN Midwest will be regional telecasts available on cable and satellite only in the state of Nebraska, per Big 12 Conference rules. So, from reading that, it sounds like the game will only be available in Nebraska. Anyway, I will tune in to Channel 647 tomorrow on the outside chance that it's on.......but just wanted to forewarn anyone, that it may be blacked out down here.

UTA lost to UT-Pan American last night, if I'm not mistaken. BTW....the Nebraska game is scheduled to be shown on Fox Sports Midwest....which is channel 647 for folks who have DirecTV.

The only two people who claimed to have been contacted are Nix and Butler. Dodge and Matthews have said that no one has contacted them. (so far) Looking more and more like a crony hire....just like when Helwig hired Dickey.
-
Yeah, but have we ever played a big game on Thanksgiving Weekend and drawn a good crowd? Don't think so.
-
I guess we'll never know the answer to this, but I wonder if Mr. Goldfield's donation, was contingent on Dickey being fired. It's possible, especially since it happened fairly soon after Dickey's firing. I know of many fans who withheld donations this year, because of Dickey.

Other Dickey accomplishments which he didn't have time to list: 1) In his spare time, he discovered cures for Cancer, Aids, and the Ebola virus. Unfortunately, he's waiting on patents before going public with the cures. 2) Brokered a peace deal between the Palestinians and Israelis 3) Actually baked a tasty fruitcake.....the world's first. 4) Remember that time he found your keys...when you couldn't find them? Remember, they were in sofa cushion. Thanks, Coach Dickey! 5) Since his arrival in Denton, all cats and dogs have gotten along. 6) He gave the Kettle Korn guy a better recipe, which he's used since the 2002 season. 7) Remember that last good rain you had in Denton? Thankfully Darrell is 1/164th Cherokee, and a little dance he did, brought that about. 8) Since he's been in Denton, just face facts.....farts don't smell as bad as they used to. 9) He was the one who convinced PlummMeanGreen to start posting in Technicolor. There are probably many more, but these were ones that just came to mind..... thanks DD!

RV said that the job of picking a new coach, will be a collaborative effort between he and Dr. Bataille. He said that they've had some great applicants, and that the list is being narrowed down, and will be further narrowed down in the next week or so. I'm guessing the T-Day holiday may cause a little delay in interviews. Anyway, he made it clear, more than once, that Dr. B is very involved in this.

RV will be interviewed by George in a few minutes (KWRD-FM).

I realize that high school coach Dennis Parker was a disaster. And I also realize that there hasn't been many examples of high school head coaches becoming college head coaches and being successful. However, I think Todd Dodge might be the exception. Also, Dodge is quite different from Parker. I would say that Dodge is worldly compared to the yokel Parker. Dodge has been on the big stage, having played at UT. Plus, his h.s. football team has been on national TV more than we have. Parker came to us from Marshall.....east Texas. (No knock there, as I am from East Texas. And no we don't claim MGW). Dodge however, is right now in the Metroplex. Worlds of difference. Dodge played at UT.....Parker at SE Oklahoma (Dennis Rodman's college). Also, since 1991......when Parker was hired......high school football is totally different. Used to, high schools ran rather simplistic offenses. Now, more high schools run spread offenses than run oriented ones (if I'm not mistaken). In other words, high school offenses are much more similar to college offenses, than they used to be. Dodge isn't my fave candidate....Carthel and Matthews are. But, TD is a close 3rd. And if Todd gets the job, I'll be very supportive. Just my two cents.

Why is Dickey so bitter about getting fired?

The student announcer doing the b-ball game, is doing a great job, IMHO.
-
What a ridiculous waste of money. Are the helmets black, too???
-
The next time a co-worker (or anyone else) gets all wussy over the way Dickey was fired.....ask them if they're gonna get $525,000 severance pay when they're canned. And, if there's going to be a part of the complex named after them.
-
I was at the gym, and the sports guy came on CNN Headline News to give a report. Then, lo and behold I see a UNT logo on the screen (it was the Helwig era one, with copper and blue in it). Anyway, since it was muted and I can't read lips....I don't know what they said. But, the graphic on the screen insinuated that the guy was talking about our Practice Fields being named after our recently fired coach. Wish I could tell you more, but with it being muted (and me not wearing headphones).
-
Yeah, too bad that I don't have more than a million to throw around. I'd ask that the practice field be named after: Gallery Furniture's #1 competitor in Houston. GMG.

I think Coach _________ should be next
SUMG replied to Ole Green Guts's topic in Mean Green Football
I had missed it the first time I read it....it says that in his first year at WTAMU (2005), they won three games on the last play of the game. That's amazing. But that being said, like GMG1999, I wonder if Mr. Carthel is too ensconsed in Amarillo, what with his farm being nearby, and all. Anyway, it never hurts to ask if he'd be interested.
