I would like NT to get a little respect though. The woman's record is better then several in the top 25.

NT athletic site: women win 73-55 against UT Pan
gksmith replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I think the sad thing is that there are schools in the top 25 with a lot worse records then that. No respect. -
I think the city of Dallas has no leverage in this. This isn't "If you agree to stay, we will make these additions." It is more of "We will make these additions and hope both of you WILL stay...PLEASE!!!!!!" While it has been a tradition, the two schools could easily agree to a "home and home" schedule like all the other games. This would suck for State Fair. Not as many prople will make the treck to Dallas for Grambling/Prarie View at the State Fair.

My drive from Lewisville to Plano was not too bad. TXDOT did a good job of sanding yesterday. Temperatures will rise later today and all this will be over by afternoon rush hour.

Thank you to those who sacrificed for us.

Been to Arizona memorial. Very Moving. As for the oral history, I have a relative (second or third cousin, something like that) who was a ships mechanic during WW II. He was at Pearl on that day. He gave an oral history for the University. That history is not just the high profile people in the war. The oral history includes a man who spent his years in the US Navy in the bowls of the ship or other "enlisted personnel" jobs. He came from a small farm in west Texas, served his time, went back to that same farm afterwards. He passed away earlier this year. -
It has been a long time since North Texas was the Playboy Party School of the Year.

The roads are not too bad today. Good job of sand and salt by TxDOT.

The sad part of this is that all of these changes are for 3 games a year. I think Dallas would lose more money if they lost Texas/OU then the Cotten Bowl Classic. And I don't think Miller screwed up on the Cowboys and a new stadium. I bag on Miller for a lot of stuff but I think she was actually right on this. Professional sports teams hold cities hostage. "Give me a new stadium or we'll move to a city that will." Disgusting.

Too many to choose from. aTm, OU, SMU, all very much hated by me. And the people who picked UNT for this poll... Shame on you.

La Tech routing Fresno at half, 25-3.
gksmith replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
With La Tech beating Fresno, and Tulsa winning the CUSA, that confirms how good those teams are and why UNT had such a hard time against them this year. -
Look at the behavior in general. Who HASN’T been critical at some point in time of ANY team of ANY sport you are a fan? That frustration can get a little vocal too. One minute we are totally frustrated at a player/coach/executive/owner for a bad play or move. The next minute, when that same player/coach/executive/owner makes a great play, we are singing praises ready to canonize him, retire his number, and erect a statue in front of the stadium as the greatest player/coach/executive/owner ever. This happens for every player of every sport at every level from middle school to the professional ranks. To tell you the truth, we are not even the worst in the world when it comes to fan behavior. Examples: English Soccer Hooligans, a fan in South America (Brazil or Argentina I think) MURDERED a player for losing the World Cup because he accidentally knocked the ball into his own goal. The press box at Fouts Field is real close to the seats and fans. I think George could have done a lot for himself by closing the window during the broadcast. This isn’t much different then the coaches who got in an argument with a fan at halftime a few weeks ago. George and the coaches should have maintained their professionalism and write it off as “dumb fans.” Which we are. Every fan of every team of every sport.

There should be a 4th choice. Wife is dragging me to the mother-in-law's this weekend. I would much rather be at the basketball game.

Did Wyndham pull sponsorship of the N.O. Bowl?
gksmith replied to Baby Arm!'s topic in Mean Green Football
That's true that almost half of D1A plays in a bowl. I think last year there was a thought that the number of bowl games would be reduced. Unfortunately, the New Orleans Bowl would probably be one of the first to get cut. God forbid a bowl game with two BCS teams get cut. Not necessarily the top bowl games the top 6 teams in the nation go to but another bowlwhere they take #5 or 6 from 2 BCS conferences. -
I agree with almost all of those. How about the poor job of reporting on stuff that happens on THEIR OWN NETWORK? They suckup so much to the BCS and the big 5 professional sports (FB, BB, BASEB, HOCKEY, NASCAR). The last 4 years, SC comes on right after the New Orleans Bowl that they just broadcast...and it isn't the lead story. And they spend MAYBE 60 seconds on the game halfway through the show. Meanwhile a worthless game elsewhere leads the broadcast and they spend almost 5 minutes on.

The mentality of a high school football player is geared toward the BCS. Everyone is limited on the number of scholarships they can give out. The best players will get free rides to the best schools. The next group will get free rides to the mid-majors. But there are a lot of kids who would rather pay for college and sit on the bench at a BCS school then pay for college and START at a mid-major.
-
The BCS is what happened. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Unless you are part of the Big 6 Conferences (ACC, SEC, B12, B10, P10, BE and Notre Dame) you don't stand much of a chance to get into the big bowl games. Every once in a while a mid-major (translation: peon team) gets a high enough ranking to go to a big money bowl (What ever the #3-6 teams in the nation play for). But the only teams that have a chance at winning a National Title are the 60+ teams in the above mentioned conferences. At $10M+ to the national champion and most of the conferences share in the money translates into almost $1M per school in the conference. UNT is no where close to getting that for WINNING the New Orleans Bowl if they kept all of the cash (SBC shares the wealth). Couple that with the fact that the SBC has only 1 bowl representative while #2-5 in each BCS conference go to other bowls…the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The BCS has basically segregated football into another division. Might as well have those 6 conferences be D1A and the rest of D1A become D1AA and D1AA be D1AAA. The mentality of a high school football player is geared toward the BCS. Everyone is limited on the number of scholarships they can give out. The best players will get free rides to the best schools. The next group will get free rides to the mid-majors. That leaves the kids who have to pay for school. There are a lot of kids who would rather pay for college and sit on the bench at a BCS school then pay for college and START at a mid-major.

I got the email on that and I am interested in it if I had more cash to throw down for it. Someday someone will actually pay me what I am worth.

Wonder how some schools are getting their talent?

Is this the equivalent of what Chris Rock called the "GED: Good Enough Degree." -
What are your expectations that DD must keep ?
gksmith replied to calvin's topic in Mean Green Football
Show progress. This year was bad. I am not ready to dump Dickey yet. Next year I don't think it is too much to ask for UNT to do the following: 1. be competitive in the OOC games (score a few points on UT at lease) 2. take back the Sun Belt Conference (no worse then 2nd or a very close 3rd) 3. be bowl eligible (even though no one else from the SBC will go to a bowl other then the conference champ) 4. BEAT SMU! -
Considering what DD has done the last 4 years (bowl bids, conference championships), I am not ready to punt him outa here. The previous 4 years are the most sucess NT has had in over half a century. The last bowl game NT went to before Dickey was in 1959. Then we go to 4 straight. One bad year after 40 years of mediocrity and everyone is ready for a new coach? I fail to see the logic. NT has one bad season and everyone is ready to ride him out on a rail. Give him a year or two and see what he can make of this. If after that time NT is still 2-9 or 2-10, I'll even provide the RAIL and ties (someone else can bring the tar and feathers). As for DD not wanting to be here...I am still waiting for someone to ask the AD for permission to interview Dickey. If Darrell doesn't want to be here, I would think he would put his name in the hat for another job. Then that school has to ask permission (contract thing you know). Either he is not looking at another job or no one is interested in talking to him (and I seriously doubt KSU or anyone else looking around are not interested in DD).

It will get done...in due time.

As I hoped. Come and gone before game time. Bad enough there was a small crowd for this game because of the Thanksgiving weekend. Any threat of rain at game time would have left the stadium empty.

UNCW is a pretty good team so I don't feel too bad. One thing I hate about the UNT schedule is that there are no real good teams to play. Indiana beat us down last year or year before but there is no national power team we play out of conference. Plus the fact UNT did not get an invite to any holiday tournaments. While it might be too much to ask to demand we go to Hawaii or Alaska for the holidays, there are other tournaments to go to.

What about the typo: I thought LMo was in Sun Belt for basketball also. Someone needs to get their story straight.
