I have seen this suggested a lot. Not a fan myself. The problem is how does this apply to other sports? Do you relegate all sports based on football or do they maintain status based on their own performance? How would conferences/divisions and scheduling be handled? Out of conference scheduling would be even more difficult than it is now. Also, because of recruiting, I have doubts that we would ever see more than a handful of teams moving back and forth, not a lot of shuffling of many different teams. With pro teams, one trade for a lot of money can help them sign a lot of good players to help make the team better and move up. The top tier teams would always have the recruiting advantage (not that they don't today) and would likely have an even bigger advantage in this system. A lower division team won't have the ability to trade a good player to a high division to get more assets or money to make their team better, so they will likely stay where they are. It seems that we would need a complete overhaul to the conference system and every broadcast contract that currently exists. Just seems like it would take too much to make it happen. Additionally, the TV networks would not likely let this happen since it decreases their potential inventory.

Yes, but there is not an infinite amount of time for both so time must be divided between the two, so things happen at a slower pace. And you know that.

God forbid that the university serve the students first and be more focused on educating them than firing the athletics staff and completely rebuilding the department. How dare they! Don't they know that UNT90 is pissed off and he isn't going to take it?! Screw those students and the obscene amounts of money they are borrowing to get an education, we have games to win and people to fire! I hope Smatresk now knows where he should focus his energy and just let the rest of the university run itself.

Smatresk is busy and this is how he decided it was best based on the information available to him that is not available to us. And I read it multiple times and it doesn't seem too ridiculous. And you wonder why people on here don't seem to like you. Completely ridiculous.

I can admit that, since I don't know everything going on in the AD, I can't say for sure if it makes sense or not. There are so many things that we don't know which makes it impossible to make a firm determination either way. Do you know everything going on? Since you are so wrapped around the axle about everything, I would guess no, but I have been wrong before. But I will bow to your infinite and infallible wisdom in this and all things.

Got A Guess How Many Years The New Coach Gets?
forevereagle replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
What message does that send to a candidate? Basically, I am going to offer you a below market deal based entirely on the idea that you are extremely likely to fail and I don't want it to cost me a bunch of money when you do. Sounds like a method to get the best candidate for the job. -
In your opinion.

Agreed, but it depends on how he prioritized the hires. If he goes in order of salary, then AD would be the last position he chased. Also, he has gone through the process of replacing an AD before (at UNLV if memory serves) and he may have found it best to do after the sports all wrap for the year to make the transition smoother. The truth is, none of us really know what is going on, but it does seem that he is not happy with how things are going.
-
Not sure how not letting him make the final call on the hire means he is doing nothing and just kicking back and collecting a paycheck. Just speculation on may part, but I think that Smatresk doesn't want to be attempting to make that many athletics hires all at once while attempting to lead the university proper as well. He may get the HFC hire made, then basketball (nothing so far to believe that it is not coming), then make an AD change after those are done and school is out for the summer. Again, my guess, but the man is busy and adding that many important personnel decisions all at once would just add to the issue. Add to that that he would have to take a much more hands on approach to the AD day-to-day without a Director in place and I can see why he may want to slow roll the whole thing.
-
I don't know that I would describe it as nothing, but it certainly is being excluded from an important part of the job. Also, I am not sure that he is completely out of the hiring process, but you seem to be convinced. Maybe you have more info there than I. It certainly does seem that Smatresk is overseeing this.

If you believe, as UNT90 seems to, that RV isn't involved in this hire, then why would the MBB hire be any different?
-
It may be a timing thing. He may be looking at the current state of things and not want to make the change right now. Since we don't know everything going on, it could be that there are a few things that Smatresk doesn't want to interrupt or complicate that RV will see through to completion or to a steady state and then a change made. Could be that he wants to finish the academic year and then make a change. There are any number of valid reasons to wait a bit longer to make the change, especially with someone who has been around as long as RV has. I think June to August could be interesting and that may be where we see the change.

I think that is what you meant to post.

Patterson the former UT AD, not Patterson the TCU HC.
-
Agreed. The only thing I could see is that Kendall could call up his dad and ask for advice. Other than that, I would speculate that there would be very little involvement.
-
Wow, that is concerning. I also find it interesting that we had a winning hangover in 2014. Despite the bad season, attendance was higher in 14 than every other year prior to 13. That does give some credence to winning impacting attendance, but that it should be coupled with marketing and promotions to get us to where we want to be.

He did? This mess is over? I don't think it is accurate yet to say that he has made it through and his seat isn't hot. Just because it hasn't happened on the immediate time frame some on this board have called for does not mean that it will not happen.
-
Would have been worse had he been allowed to finish the season.

Facing adversity, Coker says he plans to coach UTSA next season

Maybe CUSA got tired of hearing about Florida and championships.
