I think in today's college football, you can take Utah State to sixteen consecutive national champions, but you go 5-7 one year, and you're gone like yesterday's used hygiene products. As with the greater employment arena, loyalty between employers and employees is gone. Somebody offers me so much as a 15% raise, and I'm gone from the current job yesterday, my chair still spinning by the time I get to the car. Unless you're Nick Saban, I don't know that there is coaching legacy anymore. But there sure as hell is an unbelievably volatile and unstable career field, wherein people should, and do, by necessity, seek lifetime security any time they can get it.

A month into the new season, and I observe the following: 1) The AD is clearly making efforts to treat us like paying customers. The emails, the updates, the solicitations for ticket purchases. I like all of it. 2) I haven't met TheWren™ yet, but I've met Coach Litrrell twice. My bullshit meter doesn't move with him at all. I find him humble, funny, appreciative of the opportunity and the fans, and fierce. Unbelievably fierce. He's not here for a paycheck (Cough..Mac...cough) and he's not unwaveringly confident in a ridiculous high school system. He's methodical. 3) There's a different vibe at the games. The fans are happy again, even in the face of a loss. They're excited. People are friendly again. 4) Hell, at the last game, even Tony Benford randomly came up to me, shook my hand, and said, "Hey man, thanks for coming out." 5) Even if our two wins have been against less than stellar teams, I don't think I've ever seen a 2-2 start in my time here. That we're winning games at all, against anybody, with the current roster, and the experiences of last year, speaks volumes to the coaching and the players buying in. I haven't seen this team lie down for anybody no matter what situation they find themselves in. This season is a HUGE step forward regardless of final record. Things are different. And I like it.

Tennessee was definitely in the wrong on that one. Just glad to see something take the focus off us. That one was unquestionable.

On July 15th, I went down to Southside Ballroom for a Slightly Stoopid concert. I was there very early because I'm always first in line for this band. I didn't realize that it was right across the street from the main Dallas Police station. They had the patrol cars of the fallen officers out there and officers in full dress paying their respects. It was a sobering experience.

Do we laugh at SMU for having to give tickets away to what should be a premier game or do we envy SMU for having the gumption to give tickets away to fill the stadium for what should be a premier game? I need to know which direction to direct my ire.

I'm gonna need a banana for scale.

SMU gives a sliding scale of signing bonuses based upon just how dishonest a given applicant is.
