Doesn't the NCAA require D-1A teams to average 15,000 in attendance? I recall San Jose State coming perilously close to this. Has this ever been an issue at UNT?

I don't know if I've met team KATT, but I can personally vouch for the outstanding tailgating hospitality of the LSU fans. Best weekend ever (except that Irvine lost the series) 1) Amazing food, free flowing beer, super friendly and incredibly knowledgeable people 2) Got to see Irvine play 3) Got to be at the last series in the Box I can only imagine that baseball tailgating is but the tip of the iceberg when compared to football. I can assure anyone who's going that you're going to have the time of your life.

What Questions Do You Have To Ask Yourself When...
oldguystudent replied to eulessismore's topic in Mean Green Football
Questions I ask myself in this situation: Is the beer in my cooler still cold? Are the opposing team's cheerleaders hot? Should I pay the ten bucks for the orange lot parking? Should I indulge the kid and get her that giant foam finger at Voertman's? How did I ever live as a student of a school with no football at all? -
Game played at Texas Stadium...42-10 at halftime...Watching from above, through his Texas Stadium window, and unable to take it anymore, God smites the field, rendering it unplayable, and the game is called as is.

Pourhouse Is Catering At The Pre-tulsa Game Festivities
oldguystudent replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Is anyone from the pourhouse reading this? It may not be their fault, but by virtue of sponsoring a tent full of asshats, it's reflecting very poorly on their image. -
I'm waiting for the money line. -1100?

That's interesting. I had a really great time at the super regionals in Baton Rouge. I got the whole "Tiger Bait" treatment thing, but it passed quickly and I found myself feasting on crawfish, jambalaya and beer in no time. Maybe their baseball fans are more civil?

Yeah, but they sometimes take it a wee bit too far. I've worked with a few aggies, and it's like, "Dude, really. It's freaking Tuesday afternoon and it's April. You're 54 years old, and you want me to admire the beauty that is your aggie ring ah-gain." I'm all for being a fan and supporter of your school, but Aggies (and some Longhorns too) make it their whole identity for the rest of their lives.

I would imagine that it's only the mansion dwellers that will be able to afford the $45 tickets and the God knows how much parking. Just think, next year Jerry Jones will have his billion dollar stadium built, so when LSU next has to come to town, Jerry can charge all the LSU fans a $30,000 seat license fee -- student special...only $15K per seat! In all seriousness, I'd love to go. I've never been to Texas Stadium, and the ole' gal's about to take her last bow. Alas the wife isn't gonna' let me spend that kind of money these days.

That's right. The only real reason not to do it is if your program is on the verge of being a BCS crasher. Boise St and Hawaii probably wouldn't have gotten in if they'd scheduled a FCS team. If, on the other hand, you're shooting for a December bowl game, any bowl game at all, it won't hurt. In fact, doesn't one FCS victory per year count towards bowl eligibility?

Yeah, I think I'm done with the Pourhouse before I ever started. That alumni event, on the other hand, looked pretty cool. I'll be eligible for that circa 2010. What do they charge for dues? Irvine wanted some exorbitant amount of money for no tangible benefits that I could see. From what I gathered, they wanted a thousand bucks or so in return for the right to send me credit card offers.

I posted about it here.

So, I've Watched Some Of The Tv Broadcast
oldguystudent replied to TheColonyEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
I would have agreed with you until I found it impossible for my daughter to see anything while sitting in the student section. It never occurred to me that she was going to get lost in the crowd when everybody around her, being considerably taller, was standing up most of the time. She got pretty frustrated with that and started crying. The endzone was a great refuge, and I wasn't alone out there. There were quite a few families with smaller children. -
How 'bout Southlake Carroll High School?

Pourhouse Is Catering At The Pre-tulsa Game Festivities
oldguystudent replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Same thing happened to me. They weren't very nice about it either. It was one of several setups with the mysterious wristbands. -
The car looks great. Is there some significance of the Model A as it relates to UNT that I'm unaware of?

"home" Game Against L S U In Texas Stadium?
oldguystudent replied to ADLER's topic in Mean Green Football
When do the lines go up? I'm curious to see if it's over 50. -
They're $10 for the rest of the season. I asked at the ticket office why Tulsa was $15, and they told me that they thought there would be a higher demand for this game. What I want to know is why I paid a $5 surcharge on top of my $15 ticket price for my daughter's student guess pass. I talked to another guy who bought his ticket at the game, and he didn't have to pay that surcharge. What did I do wrong? Was it that I paid with a card?

That is a fair post. No gripes with you, good sir.

I'm going to reiterate that what I saw were fundamental mistakes. I will reserve judgment as to whether I should attribute that to youth on the players side or poor discipline on the coach's side. If it's youth, look for that bowl eligibility in 2010. If not, well...then it will have been four years, the players will all belong to Dodge, and it might be time to start asking some tough questions. It is times like these that will test the mettle of a coach who's used to winning state championships in high school. I'm sure college kids are a whole 'nother fish to fry when it comes to personal management.

I suppose that before anybody kills me, I should make it clear that my post has been sponsored and fueled by the fine people at the Miller brewing company -- the company that is the cause of, and solution to, all my problems.

Alright, I've got to get on my soapbox here for a second. There's a LOT of sad sack "so it goes with our program" posts on here. You want that shiny new stadium? You've got to support and believe in the program. Support brings enthusiasm, enthusiasm brings consistent attendance, consistent attendance brings dollars, dollars talk and the excrement of livestock walks. Dollars bring solid university commitment to the program. And THAT will bring us a new stadium and a solid recruiting program. This fatalistic view of misfortune being a matter of course isn't going to accomplish anything. As an undergrad, I had season tickets to basketball for all four years. I saw ONE, count 'em ONE win. But I believed then, as I do now, that it was my duty to support the athletic program (I was a serious "athletic supporter!"). In exchange for my allegiance, I got to know the AD on a first name basis and bitched at him frequently that if he didn't want us to be the laughing stock of the NCAA, he'd better start thinking about putting some support in the program. The AD eventually hired a competent basketball coach, which brought us two conference championships, and resurrected what is now a nationally prominent baseball program. He did this while staying within Title IX constraints. Dan Guerrero left UCI for UCLA a few years ago, but we're still in touch, and he still supports the growth of Irvine sports. I'm obviously giving myself waaayyyyy too much credit for the turnaround. However, I think that if we few students who actually gave a crap had taken on a fatalistic view, the message would never have gotten across to the AD that students did care and that they were going to stick it out thick and thin. The UNT football team has, well, a LOT of room for improvement. But I'll be there for all the home games, I'll suffer through the losses, but I'll never accept that this is a perpetual given.

Well, it looks like I'll need to bring more beer to future games. We showed up too early at about 1 o'clock, and parked in the lot behind the super pit thinking we could tailgate there, but to no avail. We wandered around the orange and blue lots a little bit, but people just kinda' looked at us funny (Old guy and his daughter? What're they doing here?) We finally settled in at the student tailgating section, threw a little football around, drank some beer, and listened to the band before going in. Did the village thing a little bit, but didn't have the necessary enigmatic wristbands to participate in anything. The kid starting crying in the game because we were sitting in the student section on the 50 yard line, and she couldn't see anything. I put her up in the rail, but security came and made her get down. We moved over the the endzone by the cannon, and she had a lot better time there. She enjoyed watching the smoke rings come out of the cannon. It was fun, but it would be a lot better if we knew somebody. Tough going these things alone.
