Why The Sun Belt Only Got Two Bowl Teams
oldguystudent replied to SUMG's topic in Mean Green Football
I actually spent the night in Shreveport last year on the eve of the Independence Bowl and had no trouble getting a room at a discounted rate with about two days notice. -
First I'm gonna' watch Humboldt State in the Smoke-a-bowl, then I plan on satisfying my hunger with the soup bowl and the rice bowl. A few hours later, I'll be hitting up the toilet bowl. In all honesty, I've never watched much in the way of bowl games outside the Rose Bowl. When that bowl became the BCS tsar, I kinda' lost interest in that too. I'm gonna' get slammed for this, but as a casual college fan, I've never understood why teams that have records of 6-6 on up to 8-4 should be rewarded with postseason games that really have no meaning whatsoever. I mean really? The SEC #9 team vs. the MAC #6 team? (Not an actual matchup. Randomly chosen) If we're not gonna' have playoffs, I'd much prefer the old matchups of conference champions that used to be. ETA -- My opinion may change if UNT someday goes to a bowl and I find the resources to go.

The optimal order quantity equals the square root of two times annual demand times setup cost divided by annual carrying cost times one minus daily demand divided by daily production. It is a reasonable $3.95 per minute discretely charged to your credit card to continue.

Absolutely. Operations Management tonight at 6:30. Accounting tomorrow, and your old favorite, BLAW on Thursday morning.

I still haven't been given a definitive answer as to whether we can tailgate in the parking lot prior to bball games or not. Of course, I'm sure it's a tough sell to get people outside in Jan/Feb around here. Then again, those outdoor heater thing-a-majobs that you see on restaurant patios go for only about $150 or so. Set up a few of those, and everybody's toasty warm! I did see that the several resident halls are sponsoring tailgate events for students throughout the season, but that doesn't do much for us oldies.

This from the man who places higher priority on his school work than on his attendance to game day!

Bflan, did that flying worm helmet ever actually exist? It's unreasonably awesome.

Here's How The Coaches Ranks The Teams
oldguystudent replied to jperg2's topic in Mean Green Football
Holy crap! I knew their defense was stingy, but didn't realize it was that stingy! Paterno better be watching tape of the Oregon State and Stanford games and find out what the heck they did to get double digit scores! -
When And Where Does Club Baseball Play?
oldguystudent replied to oldguystudent's topic in Mean Green Athletics
Cool. Keep me posted as the time comes. I was tempted to go sign up with the baseball club. Think they could use an old fat guy with two blown knees and no real skills to speak of? I thought I'd sign up so I could tell fractured fairy tales to my grandkids about how I played college ball! -
Casual observer since September of 2008 with no history whatsoever with UNT or its athletic program. You can find my name on the government doll...er...uh...student loan list. I suppose the little things like getting into in-class debates with professors and students over the stadium vote and swaying them to our side don't matter because such actions don't come with a signature and a check. I suppose getting my classmates to attend games when they never have in the past don't count either because the revenue UNT receives from that is well below six figures. I suppose being on a constant campaign to educate my fellow students as to why a viable athletic program matters doesn't count because you can't write that off on your tax returns. The fact that I literally created the student section at basketball games and tirelessly harassed and worked with the AD to bring a student vote that resurrected the baseball program at my alma mater doesn't matter because my alma mater isn't UNT -- yet. Guess that renders me without title to an opinion. I too think that the opinions stated here at gmg are sometimes a little over the line, but it's a bunch of anonymous people posting on a message board. I spent some time on the LSU boards last spring before Irvine went out there. In spite of having one of the most powerful athletic programs in the country that had just come off a national freaking championship in football and a final four appearance in basketball those guys were exponentially more critical of their program than anyone here. It's the nature of the message board beast. If you as an alumnus let that get to you, then you need to get out to more games and come hang out with us commoners. In spite of the sometimes caustic statements made on this board (again, under false names and the supposed security of anonymity), just about everybody I've met in real life from this forum is a stand up person who is a die hard fan of UNT athletics (well, the jury's still out on some of those guys I tailgate with). Here's the bottom line as I see it. Since coming to campus in late August I've had the good fortune to meet a great number of people from this message board of all levels of donation (and I do mean all levels). I've met a lot of the players, and most of the athletic staff. Most compelling is that I've met a lot of the athletes' parents. It's really something to see the pride in those parents' eyes when they tell you about their kid, his jersey number, what position he plays, what he studies. In the end, when the chips are down and the cards are turned over, we've got a great community of good friends and a group of kids getting an education, many of whom wouldn't have the opportunity otherwise. That's what will keep me coming back to UNT year after year. In the mean time, I'll take my shots at what I see to be some poor strategic decisions, but I'll still be back next week cheering in the stands. Oldguystudent -- present dirt poor graduate student and tailgating nut, future donor to the program.

Just remember. This poll is absolutely meaningless...unless we're in it. Besides, Irvine made it all the way up to number 1 back in the 2000-2001 season and still didn't get a tourney bid. The poll is nothing more than a feel good for the have nots.

We here at UNT did our part to help the cause of all three teams! They should be sending us Christmas cards.

OK. Here's the next question. With all the football programs in the world going to these fancy schmancy stadiums that include luxury suites, hotel rooms, maid service, flying clowns, and levitating goal posts, where are all the new basketball arenas? I don't hear much about that. The D1 digs I've been to, including Pauley Pavillion at UCLA, just aren't all that impressive. Many, including places like Cal, are souped up high school gyms. USC, of course, did just build a new basketball arena as they continue to play in that rock pile called the LA Coliseum.

Fixed that for you. Just in case we wanna' play the "But the school that I didn't attend in my state is cleaner than the school you didn't attend in your state" game, here's a 2007 reminder of the home team's shenanigans. I have no use for any of these programs or the unaffiliated douches that take their entire personal identity from a bunch of logo helmeted kids that can throw an oblong ball. Send 'em to the NFL. I'll stay here and watch my local student athletes.

I have no answers for your questions, but I love the new avatar. Who's your photographer?

Purely conjecture here, but this is Irvine's joint that seats 5,000 (pardon our plastic seats please). With our current attendance getting up towards 4,000, can you imagine how noisy and intimidating a place like that would be? Maybe we should pull the ole' Oakland Coliseum trick and tarp over the upper deck. I guess my point is that I'd like to see the 3-4000 people in the super pit more densely seated. Saturday was supposedly 3,000 people in attendance, but when I looked around, it sure didn't look like 1 in 3 seats had a butt in it. Everybody was way too spread out to get any real noise going. Those two sections next to the pit crew are always completely empty. I'm of the opinion that the student section needs to be shifted over two sections, but apparently those empty seats are bring revenue from season ticket holders.

I will never forget the personal hell we created for him when he showed up for a UNLV-UCI game shortly after being fired from the Spurs.

And when Florida wins the BCS...

Not an emoticon, but...

Tarkanian couldn't run a clean program if you threw him in a swimming pool full of purell. The man could sure win though. In the long run, that seems to trump everything doesn't it? I am utterly amazed that he was able to take both LBSU and UNLV to national prominence. Neither school was exactly a powerhouse before he showed up, and both suffered from his dirty pool in the end. But of course, he was innocent of all charges ETA -- Tarkanian's LBSU teams of 1971-73 made the elite eight twice and the regional third place once. All three were later vacated by the NCAA.

Well, Whadaya Know! The Texas Whinehorns
oldguystudent replied to Green Grenade II's topic in Mean Green Football
I ask this question out of complete and utter ignorance having never seen a single snap of high school football in my life. Doesn't high school football end with a state championship? Then wouldn't the state champs bicker about who wins the mythical national championship? I know they've got national polls for high school, so surely there must be some jawing after the playoffs are said and done. -

Here's a stat I noticed in the box score that surprised me: Lead changes: 0

Although I think the super pit is a great place, and considering the time it was built, I think it was as state of the art as it got back then, I wonder what the planners were thinking making a 10,000 seat arena for UNT basketball. 5-6,000 average attendance for a team of our level would be fantastic if the venue were that size. But even with a crowd like that, the super pit sits half empty. Were there additional intentions for the building back in the early 70s? Concerts perhaps? Did they aspire to grow the basketball program to a point where they would attract 10,000 people to a game? Who's the old timer here that knows about this?
-
Perhaps not, but what kind of national television ratings would a Texas/OU championship game bring? Besides, the whole OU/Texas thing has been settled via Big XII tiebreaker rules, and OU came out on top. They need somebody out of conference to play for the championship. It's kinda' like saying that the Eagles shouldn't have made the super bowl a couple years ago because both the Patriots and Steelers were better teams.
