  1. I fully expect that my Republican representative, Michael Burgess, a graduate of UNT, will steadfastly refuse the increase. Although, looking at the bills he sponsors, with the notable exception of abortion, he seems to be siding with Democrats on most legislation. Wait a sec...this from his website: Think I need to send him an email reminding him of his stance. Let's see if he refuses the money.
  2. I happened to look up AIG stock this evening, and my offer of a pack of gum for 100 shares wasn't too far off. 100 shares of AIG runs you a whopping $42 right now. Steal!
  3. Well I've yet to meet a classmate in the business school who either voted for the student fee or attends any athletic events. Their attitude is get in, get out, get paid.
  4. Sure. And I'll coach the centers on direct snaps.
  5. So Tune was getting out of Dodge, but now he's singing to a different tune?
  6. Most people that drink any quantity of real beer do end up pretty huge.
  7. I'm looking at the Dow sitting at 6786 right now. I believe a big part of this precipitous drop is a result of fear more than it is a result of business fundamentals. Conversely, I believe that the 13,000 mark (or wherever it peaked) was a result of bubble-riders with no sense of sustainability. So now that fear is rampant, the TV says the world is ending, we're falling into Stalinesque socialism, the dollar will be more valuable to us as toilet paper than currency (This is good for global warming!), and we'll all be speaking Chinese before the close of the next decade, how low can this whole stock thing go? Good thing I spent all my money on UNT before my stocks could drop. Now I've just got the kid's college fund and my IRA wrapped up in this, and both of those have plenty of time to recover. I am therefore gleefully sitting on the sidelines of all this wondering just how much people can panic. Oldguy "I'll trade you a pack of Wrigley's doublemint gum for a hundred shares of AIG" student
  8. Stealth bench?
  9. Can I have my gyro meat separate from my pita on Greek unity night? Round bread products have many uses on top of holding my tzatziki drenched ground lamb. Can we break plates on the court at halftime? Hey! Baklava for everyone! OK. Enough with the bad Greek generalizations. In all honesty, I don't see much Greek presence on this campus. I'll see the occasional sorority girl sitting on the Greek letters emblazoned on her backside, but that's about it. I keep reading about how much supposed influence the Greek community has on campus, but I sure don't see it much. Must be all clandestine or something.
  10. So the bottom line for your's truly is that MRIs confirm that if I run more than 5 yards, I'll end up in the operating theater with a bunch of med students looking on. Can I still show up, don a t-shirt and drink beer? ETA -- Wait a tic. I can still kick the crap out of a ball. Can someone draft me as a punter?
  11. For four years El Paso was my second home via huge customers at work. I would, on occasion, be known to walk over the downtown bridge into Juarez. I don't know how else to say this. I am a seasoned world traveler. I have seen things that would make most grown men cry. Juarez, and only Juarez, is the place that I genuinely feared for my life.
  12. I believe that everyone should pull themselves up by their own damn financial bootstraps and be left alone as to what they do in the liquor store/church/bedroom. I don't seem to belong in any of the current media pundits' categorization.
  13. Sooo...then...we care about this game? Is that what you're trying to say? P'shaw. Just another Wednesday night if you ask me.
  14. Might one argue that this is a HUGE one-game stretch?
  15. Kansas hauled butt out of Denton immediately after the Harvard game. We were scheduled to play them in the night cap. What happened to that?
  16. Don't know how the morning game against Kansas went. Kansas beat Harvard 10-1 earlier. There must be a mercy rule because they shut the game down in the 5th inning. In the UNT-Harvard game, UNT tied it with a 2-run homerun, but Harvard scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. In other news, the redneck bleachers behind right field are THE place to be. We had a lot of fun out there. They had the basketball game going on the radio, a few football players out there, and many other amenities not available in the stands. The kid in the bleachers The view from the bleachers
  17. I think bidets are the answer...until there's a drought!
  18. Does that mean there's a statewide ban against her in California? Anyhoo, on the move to KTLA, if she has any aspirations of work beyond news casting, KTLA is the place to be. It's right smack dab in the middle of Hollywood. Several news casters in Los Angeles have moved on to bigger and better things that just wouldn't present themselves in the DFW area. It's like being in a perpetual audition, and people do get noticed out there. Jillian Barberie was always my favorite. She still does her Fox morning show gig, but she's been seen all over the place.
  19. I was planning on going today, but it's about 12 degrees outside. Maybe it'll warm up for the 12:30 game.
  20. Isn't the government essentially becoming a big shareholder of these big, struggling companies at their own request? Don't want the government dictating compensation? Don't go sit in congress and ask the government for several billion dollars. Nobody's holding a gun to the head of the banks and forcing them to take any money. Unfortunately for the banks, it's take the government money and the restrictions that come with it or die. Uncle Sam isn't making any such restrictions on companies that are keeping their hands out of the government cookie jar. I don't think Apple has taken any money, so I'm sure Steve Jobs is paying himself whatever he damn well pleases and nobody cares. (Apple being the first random company to come to mind). Flyer, I think what you're rightfully against is nationalization, and we're perilously close to that in the banking industry right now. I do, however, think the CEO pay restriction is a separate matter. It's essentially a new sheriff coming into town with a bunch of stock certificates in his hand and bringing order to a previously lawless town. Madoff is an exception only in volume (OK, not a CEO, but somebody with the trust of many people and their well being in his hands). There are many like him out there, and if companies run by people like that go begging, then they deserve what they get. If companies are running themselves like the place you work at, then they're likely not going begging, they're free of any government compensation dictation, and they're probably exercising the restraint that they should anyway. I'm just glad Enron's not around to grab a share of this cash. Those bastards deserve to rot in hell and live on the tossed aside sandwich crumbs of dense urban tramps. I'd be right pissed if ole Kenny boy got to pay himself a big bonus with my tax dollars. A-ha! That's what it is! I view these guys as big time welfare moms! Nobody gets something for nothing, right?
  21. Well crap. Now I'll never know the rest of the story. When I was in fourth grade, our teacher had us listen to Paul Harvey every day after lunch. Fond memories. RIP Paul.
  22. So is somebody going to explain to us newbies exactly what a gmg bowl is? The last time I saw the phrases mean green and bowl together there were lighters and lava lamps involved. I'm assuming this is not the case here.
  23. Sheryl Crow has the environmental answer to toilet paper.
  24. Looks like this thread is coming down to entitlements. Let's see if I can sum up my beliefs all metaphorical style-like. I believe in safety nets because sometimes people genuinely fall. I don't, however, believe in life jackets. Everybody needs to learn how to swim on their own.
