I'm On A Mission For The First Tailgate Next Year
oldguystudent replied to oldguystudent's topic in Mean Green Football
I have found the food that will bring world peace. I suggest presenting it to the state legislature to sway thing our way. Combining the two foods that no person can resist, gentlemen, I give you the hot dog pie. -
That should have an interesting effect on the indoor game. I wonder if you'll see two letter athletes playing indoors in fall and outdoors in spring.

I've owned two Mazdas (pre-ford partnership era) and a Honda in my life. Aside from that, I've had four company vehicles, one Dodge and three Fords. Maybe it's just luck of the draw for me, but the three Japanese vehicles were just all around more reliable than the four American vehicles. The biggest difference between the two groups, I have to admit, is in the power. The American vehicles were all much more powerful than the Japanese vehicles. That, however, has never been important to me. I'm a point A to point B kind of guy who neither needs to practice his NASCAR allegiance on the tollway nor sees a vehicle as a visible extension of his manhood. My theory on the quality difference is this. We know that the technology amongst the world's auto manufacturers is pretty much the same across the board. I think the difference is that Hideke the Japanese auto worker has more stringent production specs and takes more responsibility to stay within them than does Steve the UAW guy. I have no basis in fact whatsoever to support my theory.

Two facts to support the theory that conference affiliation matters. 1) I'd never heard of a single Sunbelt team outside of UNT's brief stint in the big west until I enrolled in school here. 2) Our honors stats class was talking about the whole tier 1 university thing yesterday, and one girl (this is one of our smart students, mind you) kept saying that UNT needed a football team. Are there really students who are unaware that we have a team or was she, at the ripe old age of 19, already so jaded as to make sarcastic remarks that our football team is the same as not having one?

I was in Korea with small junkets to Japan (for visa runs) and the Philippines and Thailand for vacation. I've seen things that'll make most grown men cry. I have most definitely had dog. No balut or beetles, but grasshoppers and silk worm pupa. -

I think it's funny that because it's got a funky Japanese name and it's expensive that people will clamor to go eat the roe sack of a sea urchin, but they cringe at a hint of organ meat in a hot dog. -

Sir, I have lived in the deepest, darkest bowels of east Asia for an extended period of time with no contact to the western world. I assure you that the ingredients of a hot dog do not phase me. -

And yet you have the patience to sit through an entire UNT football game. -
Arkansas does have a good team, but SEC teams piss me off something fierce for three reasons: 1) They are probably the only conference that has a rabid enough fan base for the sport to make a few bucks, so they never play on the road. Arkansas plays 37 of 56 games at home this year. 2) They tend to play nobody more difficult than Podunk Middle School's B team at home for OOC games. 3) Then, when they all have .500 records, they go to the selection committee and demand 8 bids because their conference is so tough. Nonetheless, the SEC does have talent every year. In the end, as they say, good pitching usually does beat good hitting though, and the SEC, led by LSU's "Gorilla ball" loves the power over the defense.

I am open to suggestions, but I still think keeping it to hot dogs is the way to go. Look at the arguments going back and forth on the humble tube steak already on this thread. Sausage may be more gastronomically rewarding, but I think there are just too many varieties. Can you compare a blood sausage to chorizo? We make this a competition, and I'll experiment all summer long with different brands of hot dogs (some mail ordered in) with different cooking techniques and toppings (although I'm sticking with the original bacon dog idea regardless). Besides, who wants to claim that they were part of the first annual Mean Green sausage fest? Edit -- Oh dear God. I just gave myself the idea of a bacon dog cooked in chorizo fat. I'm shaking at the very idea of it. -

But see, limiting it to hot dogs is more like an iron chef thing. Here's a common bland ingredient. What can you do with it? You bring sausages into the mix, and somebody's gonna' float some kickback down to the guys at Syracuse and get some special steroids enhanced ingredient shoved in a casing. Not a level playing field at all. -

I'm excluding sausages from this discussion. Totally different class of gastronomical experience IMO. -

Here's a brainstorming idea I had while wandering away from my studies for my impending stats test this afternoon. Given the passion that people share for hot dogs on this board, I see potential for a charitable event at a tailgate. The first annual Mean Green hot dog cook-off. Take entry fees, donate some percentage to the charity of our choosing, and pay the rest out as prize money. If not cash for prizes, I'm sure we could come up with something. Then we get to kill two birds with one stone. We get to protest the nanny state in which we live and then get to put our money where our mouths are by actually contributing to causes of our choosing rather than the government's. If you think my idea sucks, that's ok too. I'm just trying to escape the means and deviations for the moment! -

Bstnsportsfan should recognize this oddity of the hot dog world: I wasn't quite sure what to make of this thing when I ordered it. What the hell do Bostonians have against the hot dog bun? -

Pfft. What a weenie! -
Irvine made the sweet 16 in men's soccer this year, nearly missing a trip to beautiful Frisco, TX for the NCAA finals. Edit -- OSU's ISR is a respectable 29th. They're just stinkin' up the joint in conference play. Not looking good for the post season unless the Big XII has a conference tourney and they can make a run. Then again, their RPI is 27. RPI like that plus BCS money is awfully tempting to the selection committee.

Wait. So when you're teaching a kid to play pool, does that mean you can tell him to handle his cue like he would his hot dog? -
