  1. In California, it's not the Peter Principle, it's the Gray Davis Principle!
  2. I'm sad that I've composed what I think are two of my most clever analogies, and not a single LOL, virtual guffaw, or +1. Hell, I didn't even get a + decimal point. It is indeed a rainy, dreary, depressing day for your's truly. Wait, I've got it! You know what she's trying to get with all that Botox? Tight ends! Hah! The secret weapon of politicians and football gurus the world round!
  3. Looks good to me. I've always held, with the broadest stroke possible, that one side is manipulative while the other is misguided. Nancy Pelosi is a toxic cocktail of both qualities that the bartender keeps forcing down our throats in cheap plastic cups.
  4. The givens: 1) Pelosi is nuttier than a major distribution warehouse for Planter's 2) She will hold on to that seat until such time as her heart stops beating or the world supply of Botox is depleted The question: Of all the Democrats from all the States in all the country, why did they pick her to be speaker? Come to think of it, both parties tend to send some far off center loud mouthed bag of wind when they get power in the house. Why would you do that? Are you trying to limit your new found power to one election cycle?
  5. Found the documentary on YouTube. Really fascinating.
  6. I'm obviously a big follower of the Big West conference. Back when it was still a football conference, I rarely had any idea who won the title each year. They played in some fifth rate bowl, Las Vegas I think, and nobody cared. Hate to call a spade a spade, but this is pretty much how I see the Sunbelt today. I heard of North Texas once briefly when I randomly turned on the TV and they talked about Patrick Cobbs for a second before the New Orleans bowl. Other than that, 12 months ago, I'd quite literally never heard of most of the Sunbelt schools. I've always known about Baylor, SMU, and TCU from the old Southwest days. So if nothing else, for purposes of brand recognition, I'd rather have the major conference affiliation.
  7. Can somebody explain the song to me? It's supposed to be some masterpiece of satire right? I look at the lyrics, see the Beach Boys comparisons, but that's where my understanding of it ends.
  8. Who else here is going to admit that they grew up thinking Russian women were all 300 pound brick layers with chest hair and moustaches? I know I did. It was a brilliant piece of propaganda during the cold war. First time I got exposed to Russian women, my jaw hit the floor like some old cartoon wolf.
  9. Goals per game for world cup tournaments 5.385 : Switzerland 1954 4.667 : France 1938 4.118 : Italy 1934 4.000 : Brazil 1950 3.889 : Uruguay 1930 3.600 : Sweden 1958 2.969 : Mexico 1970 2.808 : Spain 1982 2.781 : Chile 1962 2.781 : England 1966 2.712 : United States 1994 2.684 : Argentina 1978 2.672 : France 1998 2.553 : West Germany 1974 2.538 : Mexico 1986 2.516 : Korea/Japan 2002 2.297 : Germany 2006 2.212 : Italy 1990
  10. MLB is the highest level of baseball in the world. If you drop down to the college ranks, for example, you will see many, many double digit games. Especially Sunday and Tuesday games where they throw in the bat boy to be pitcher. So the higher the level, the lower the average run total. You're saying that in your sample, MLB games averaged ~6 runs/90 minutes vs MLS soccer's ~5 goals/90 minutes. But can you say that MLS is the highest level of soccer in the world? I'd love to see the stats from the most recent world cup. What was the average goals/game then? I would venture a guess that it was higher than 2, but less than 3.
  11. I'm an old curmudgeon in that while I see most of the new computer animated flicks, I prefer the old hand drawn ones. The best relatively recent one for me that was beautifully drawn would be Spirited Away. Oh, and while we're at it, I was a big fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline, but not so much with the Corpse Bride.
  12. Too lazy to look it up, but I think that Amish are not necessarily a teetotatalling people. I also think there's some kind of rite of passage at either a certain age or marriage. Before that time, I think the teens have free reign to go nuts for a while.
  13. After several hours of consuming beverages with my class of Asian women of questionable morality, I'm not sure who's the student and who's the teacher. Thanks so much for setting me up with this gig!
  14. His undergrad class was really, really hard. I don't think I got higher than a 75 on any of his tests. Fortunately for me, he curved to my competition. He also wrote me a letter of rec this semester to skip all this undergrad stuff.
  15. Interesting character, but he does know his stuff.
  16. Finals are done. Glass filling...brain emptying...class is in session!
  17. I dunno. All the members of the SEC who aren't LSU or Georgia seem pretty happy with the "But our conference" argument. How else do they always get 47 post season bids in every sport?
  18. I think he remembers when Fouts was state of the art.
  19. You're a good man KRAM. And here's a combination of religion and small government that I can get behind: When this program began, the intent was to get one adopted child per congregation. They pretty much cleared out the foster care rolls in Chicago.
  20. I tried reading the Philly fan blog and couldn't do it. This indicates that until such time as my accounting final is over later this afternoon, the brain is full. No vacancy. I will work on opening up some space later this evening when my class of responsibly drinking Chinese prostitutes convenes.
