$1 Million, which oddly enough, is just about enough to run a decent mid-major baseball program. -

This is the non-UNT sports Forum. Stay classy Rick. -
These may seem like minor sports, but Irvine has a pretty strong tradition in them. Among the alumni: Jennifer Chandler - gold medalist (diving) in the 1976 Olympics Bob Ernst (B.S. 1968) - U.S. national rowing coach (1984 Olympic gold medal winner) Bruce Ibbetson (B.S. 1975, MBA 1982) - silver medalist stroke of the eight(Rowing) in the 1984 Olympics Brad Alan Lewis (B.A. 1976) - gold medalist (Rowing) in the 1984 Olympics Greg Springer (B.S. 1983) - silver medalist (Rowing) in the 1984 Olympics and some nobody called Greg Louganis (B.A. 1983) - four-time Olympic gold medalist (diving) At least this time when the state government screwed up beyond repair, UCI didn't cut baseball!

W A C Has N O Interest In Expansion
oldguystudent replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
If you're the SEC and you're gonna' get all twelve teams in the BCS anyway because you're conference schedule is sooo haaard, then go ahead and have a big, money making championship game. If you're the WAC, and you get a team into the BCS once every 3 or 4 years or more, then don't create a way to frack up what you've already got going just so 187 fans can drink cold beer in December. -
However, when Appalachian St beat then #5 ranked Michigan, instead of rewarding App St with a top 25 ranking, they dropped Michigan down to number bazillion and three.

Laffer Curve
oldguystudent replied to KRAM1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Two reasons I actually like that article: 1) Instead of just throwing up a random picture of the Laffer curve and saying, "See!?!? See!?!? Taxes are bad you idiots!" the article actually breaks down where on the Laffer curve the sweet spot lies along with who would have to pay how much. 2) Nowhere in the article is there even nary a mention of liberals murdering babies in the streets and then infringing on the right to execute misdemeanor offenders with fully automatic assault weapons for Jesus. If more Republicans were like that guy, I might be prone to listen more often. Instead, all I ever get is that liberalism is a mental disease for Godless hippie fags. -
Would a 12-0 Sunbelt team honestly get a BCS bid? I think the rules are that you have to beat one BCS team to be eligible, but with the remaining strength of schedule, I think an SBC team would have to have at least two victories over ranked, BCS teams. This is a slap in the face of the Rose Bowl people though. The Rose Bowl has consistently been the most elitist of all the bowls, and was reluctant to even join the BCS in the first place because it threatened their beloved Pac 10/Big 10 matchup and the huge sums of money it brings.

Greatest Movie Line Ever
oldguystudent replied to KRAM1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Well sure, but if Obama/Biden/Palin/McCain chooses to do one thing at a time, CNN/Fox will spend all day making a huge issue out of it when we should all be concerned with the economy. -

Well that's clearly because you're a lib/repub and are incapable of chewing gum and kicking ass at the same time. -

Yeah, cuz that hasn't been posted here before. Plagiarist! -
So I'm a pretty big fan of all things Anthony Bourdain. As a guy who worked his way through college in the restaurant/bar industry, I found Kitchen Confidential to be one of the funniest and most accurate portrayals of that industry even put to paper. So now he does a show on the Travel Channel called No Reservations. He travels around to various places, eats street food, and explores the vibes of the places he visits. Last night, he did a "Rust Belt" episode in which he visited Baltimore, Detroit, and Buffalo. He asked a question at the beginning of the episode that I found really interesting. I'm sure it will get spun as a liberal point of view here, but I saw it as what should be an American point of view. I don't have the actual quote, but to paraphrase, it went something like this. How is it that the wealthiest nation on earth allowed entire sectors, entire cities within its own borders to fall into such disrepair and decay? So I kinda saw it like this. It is in the best interest of a nation to maintain and increase the welfare of its citizens. Clearly, this didn't happen in these three cities. If you're a liberal, you'll probably say that the government should step in and help these areas with government spending stimulus. If you're a conservative, I would think you might see these areas as ripe for private investment and development. Either way, it failed. So my questions are these: 1) When a country has such large parts of its geography in utter despair and economic failure, is it right to prioritize the politics of other nations over the economic welfare of its own citizens? 2) Is there a viable plan to bring these cities from the ashes? Do we even care? 3) When there are a few million legit citizens that have lost jobs en masse in these cities, why is there still such a labor shortage as to attract legions of illegal immigrants? I propose no particular solution on any of these things. That's why I ask the questions.

Where Did It All Go Wrong
oldguystudent replied to Quoner's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
All I can say is that I was not totally adverse to McCain pulling out the election until Palin came along. Although, I suppose were it she who was speaking to the media about Russia, she wouldn't have tipped any hand. She would instead have gone off on a ten-minute demonstration of incomprehensible gibberish thus leaving the Russians absolutely confused. Maybe that would have been a good thing. -

You are correct. Both men's and women's soccer. The transgendered team is still pending. -
I don't know about that. The physical houses maybe, but the membership is strong and I definitely see my share of hung over Greeks coming to class. They're partying somewhere, just not in their own houses. Johnny rent-a-cop would come down on them for that. One thing I do notice though is that I never see any greek party events announced on campus. Back in my time, you knew every week who was throwing what party. It was plastered all over campus in giant, poorly drawn signage. The catch was that you didn't know where the parties would be. For that you needed to get yourself an invite. Maybe that's all gone by the wayside too now. No advertising of fun allowed? Actually, if I look at my fraternity's national website, you're apparently supposed to have pre-printed guest lists for all parties now, and there has to be some ratio of members to non-members. Liability truly is the name of the game, which is lamentable. I mean, if one can't learn professional grade ked stand technique, why else would one want to join a fraternity? Leadership skills, philanthropy, business education, personal growth and lifelong friendship? P'shaw I say! Luxury apartments, man! Let's gentrify those rowdy kids! Sounds like a one-way express ticket to the sexual offender's registry to me. No thanks.

Not to mention that UCSC is D3 and doesn't field a football team. -

Holy Crap! Is she running for Miss South Carolina? She is definitely not a representative sampling of a person from Santa Cruz though. She's not angry enough, her hair is too long, and I can't smell the stench of 6 weeks of pot smoking and no bathing. I would be curious to see how the city finances of Santa Cruz work though. They have city-wide health care, a produce company run by the homeless, squatter's rights, virtually decriminalized marijuana, and almost every business in town is local. I'm sure the property taxes during the boom paid for all the first two fine and dandy. I wonder how it's working out now. -
Your 2nd Place Rangers

I eagerly await your post, "Burn in Hell playoff hopes!"* *I don't even follow MLB anymore and have no idea how the Rangers are actually doing. -
Haha! I always love a good urban legend! As for Chico on that first list, that place was downright insane back in the day. Sadly, they dropped football, killed a few students every year from alcohol poisoning, and the administration came and cracked down hard, and I do mean hard, on student drinking. But oh dear lord was that place a rockin' in its heyday.

Now that's the kind of thing that increases the cost of health care. Horrible hazard of spraining one's thumb on something like that! -

Maybe he's a virgin in the same way that Bill Clinton never had sex in the White House. -
You see the partying students come out of the woodwork for football season, but other than that they seem to really keep to themselves. I think you can look at the timeline kinda like this: pre 1985: Texas drinking age is 18, students across campus are drinking beer, strumming guitars, and smoking the occasional left handed cigarette. 1985-1998ish: The drinking age is 21, but universities across the nation recognize that students drink. It's the dirty little secret across campus. Students migrate from Fry St. to the porches of fraternity houses where they drink beer, strum guitars, and smoke the occasional left handed cigarette. 1998ish-present: The exponential growth of civil lawsuits creates huge liability for college campuses. Response is a sudden and total police state against underaged student drinking. Police roam the parking lot of Fouts checking IDs to make sure that students aren't drinking beer. Fraternity houses are dry in common areas, so only students over the age of 21 can drink in their own rooms and only if no person under 21 is allowed in the room. Students learn how to sneak the beer into friends' apartments where they drink underground, don't play guitars because it will draw attention, and find relief that it's a hell of a lot easier to get boatloads of left handed cigarettes than it is to get a six-pack of beer. And this, not the students' lack of desire to party, is what I think makes UNT the quiet campus that it is. That said, I've just found out that my fraternity is going to reform on campus this fall. That'll give me 30-40 young minds to mold..(evil laugh)

Could you please back these statements up with a link to a biased blog? In all seriousness I applaud the way you look at things. Looks like you spend your time and energy thinking about things instead of blindly lashing out at the minutia of those who wear a different partisan brand than you. And cheerleaders? Now there's the solution to national unity right there. Who doesn't like a great set of pom-poms?
