There are rumblings out west from some baseball parents I know that San Jose St is considering reclassifying football and re-joining the Big West with football joining UC Davis and Cal Poly in the Great West conference. So that leaves four current teams before adding the movin' on up transients. Yeah, good move on not joining this conference.

All this talk about conferences, coaches, donors, club seats, and hand shakes on the Denton Square. Let's get down to brass tacks. The 2014 season opens. It's the fourth year in the new stadium under the new coach. What are we looking at that year? Sunbelt dominance? A new season in a shiny new conference? A BCS bid? An invitation to join the NFL? Overflowing crowds of 40,000 scampering for SRO tickets? Love and praise from every television station from here to Wasilla? My answer: A 9-3 season. 7-1 conference record, 2-2 OOC record with body bag games becoming a distant memory. The wing in the stadium is starting to serve a purpose by providing seating for the crowds that are averaging 25,000. The Dallas Morning News features a preseason analysis of UNT alongside TCU and SMU, but the local television stations are too busy talking about Jerry Jones interfering with Tony Romo's latest romance to notice. The spread on the bowl game is UNT -7. The conference affiliation I don't yet care about. The urinals are waterless, the windmills are powerful, the Beerman has decided to use his inside voice, and the helmets are a universally agreed upon shade of green.

And yet we cite him as the standard to live up to in the present day again and again and again and again and again. Jeez. Build a statue of the guy in front of the new stadium and let him go! As for all this conference talk, this board sometimes sounds like a bunch of welfare moms waiting for the government to extend their benefits to include free Cadillacs. Will the dominoes fall this way? Will SMU going to conference X compel conference Y to give us a break? Why, oh why doesn't conference Z see that we belong? The answer to all of those questions lies in a sub .250 record for the past many years. Tell ya' what. Let UNT take care of its own business in its own house and all that conference stuff will eventually work itself out. To very loosely paraphrase a Lil Wayne lyric, "Win games, get recognition." If UNT can't beat anybody outside the conference*, then they've got nothing to offer when jumping up and down wanting to play with the big boys like some kid trying to get in on his big brother's pool hustle. *Going back to the 2004 season, there have been 2 OOC wins -- Ball St and SMU. I looked at 2003, but I can't tell which games were conference games and which weren't, although the Baylor win is impressive.

Good question. I was in an out of this game trying to get some other stuff done, so I didn't notice this point.

My guess would be that 83 of those yards came on a single carry on an injured ankle. They probably evaluated at half time and let him take it easy for the rest of the game.
