Mwc: What Would North Texas Bring To The Table?
oldguystudent replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
So you're saying that the men's side has 11.7 scholarships to give without any additional women's scholarships? How does that work out? The 85 football scholies usually kills that right quick. At a quick glance, it appears undergrad enrollment is approximately 55% women. Doesn't the athletic scholarship availability have to reflect that? -

I see that baseball stadium and wait with great anticipation, but wonder what the fine folk overseeing Title IX will require to balance out the additional 11.7 scholarships. -
Mccarney, Canales Good Combo For Unt
oldguystudent replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
I was more fixated on the straight out of the tech writing lab writing style. C'mon, guys. Is this an editorial or an assembly manual? Don't be afraid to use a little style, man!. (Sorry. Useless vent there. The accounting department has been ruthlessly subjecting us to technical writing graders this semester. I tire of the drone-like language that we have to use, and hope to read something a little more, you know, human, in my daily student newspapers) -
Before Tasty comes in and assaults me with a batch of his oh-so-delicious baklava, I know it's waaaay to early for this. UNT's RPI is 24 and their Sagarin rating is 109 (I think both actually dropped after last night with UTA being so low). In both rankings, UNT is tops in the Sunbelt. Pretty cool to see even if it doesn't mean anything at this time. If both of those can get leveled out at around 40, an at-large would be a reasonable possibility, although I suspect Johnny better be lobbying the committee right now because, well, you know, we wouldn't want UNT taking a spot away from somebody like a 61 RPI North Carolina, now would we?

What Do You Want To Hear Today From Coach
oldguystudent replied to Eagle-96's topic in Mean Green Football
OK! (Rubs hands together) We're in Denton! Now where's the pie? -
With the departure of Fresno, Nevada and Hawaii, the WAC is left with four baseball teams, which doesn't even constitute a conference. I guess BYU would make 5, but it's still not a conference. Of the remaining teams, San Jose is the only one that has any post season experience in recent memory. The MWC isn't fairing a lot better, but Fresno and Nevada will add some zip to an otherwise lackluster schedule. The loss of TCU baseball is pretty devastating to the conference as far a quality goes. The conference is losing two and gaining two to maintain a seven-team conference. Of interest is that because there are so few baseball teams, unlike other conferences, the Mountain West plays a home and home with each conference team each year.

Technical question. Does a scholarship offered to an out of state player cost more than one offered to an in-state player?

If Offered, Should We Join The Mountain West Conference?
oldguystudent replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Honest question: Does the team currently bus to any road destinations? If not, how much more is a flight to San Diego vs. a flight to Monroe? Again, I really don't know. I'm honestly curious as to how much more of a financial hardship it would be on traveling. -

There's all that, then there's the fan base. There were a hell of a lot of purple shirts in Fouts on Saturday. How many green shirts were in Manhattan two years ago? Yeah, tough to hear, but true, and that's indicative of potential market share and conference revenue. Sellouts at a majority of home games and 5000+ at road games would get discussions moving a bit more.

If Offered, Should We Join The Mountain West Conference?
oldguystudent replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
The Big West was nothing more than a halfway house for itinerant programs trying to bring their football programs up to FBS. They brought in several of the current SBC football programs (along with Boise, Idaho and Nevada) in a desperate attempt to keep football as a sponsored sport in the conference, but with over half the conference not having football, it was a vain attempt at best. The MWC is in no such dire straits. That honor now belongs to the WAC. -

So there are really two questions here: 1) MWC vs SBC. If the question is limited to this, then yes, yes, and hell yes. In fact, the only bids I would turn down would be the WAC and the MAC (or whatever it is that Akron's in). Besides, every year it gives me an excuse to go to either Vegas or Reno, and son, if you knew me when I was gainfully employed, all it took was a random phone call with the words, "Let's go" to get me on a plane to Nevada. 2) MWC vs CUSA. This is a more difficult question to which I don't have an immediate answer. It would be interesting to be in a conference with SMU, UTEP and Rice. Also would be nice to gain revenge on Tulsa for that utter ass whooping they handed us a couple years ago. -
I don't think I've ever seen a guy coach a game and direct the crowd like he did yesterday. That was an impressive performance. The guy's a winner. Had the refs not given K-State 15 chances to score on the 1-yard line, then randomly decided on awarding a touchdown some 30 seconds after the play was over, he very well may have left the field a winner on the scoreboard as well.

When the naked man in a Turkish prison thread starts, I'm putting this thing on autopilot. Edit: And with this turn of the thread, we come across some very sad news. He's chasing nice beavers in the sky, now. Happy hunting, good sir.

Wow...does Anyone Like The Mccarney Hire?
oldguystudent replied to NCMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't know much about anything. I'd never even heard the man's name before last week. That said, there are some things I'm excited about. First of all, whoever the coach is, it's gonna' be an upgrade. The home record during my awareness of UNT football has been 1-16 with the lone win coming over Western Kentucky. RV can hire anybody, hell, anything, and it'll be an upgrade. This gives me hope that I may actually see UNT win a game every once in a while. Next, he's not from here, so he doesn't have a ravenous group of disciples to defend his every misstep. There will be no Teflon Dan. There will be no Florida Gator Jesus. If the guy sucks, he's gonna' get called to the carpet and right quick. Neinas did the report on UNT athletics overall, right? Surely, somewhere in the part of the report that wasn't released ole' Chuck must have recognized the fickle nature of the UNT fan base and its need to be recognized, talked to, hand held, and smiled at. If McCarney wasn't made explicitly aware of this during the interview process, and he didn't explicitly agree to work the room, so to speak, then a grave error has been made on both sides of the bargaining table. I do believe that there is a bit of a conflict of interest issue in using Neinas since he always, 100% of the time, recommends coaches that he represents. On the other hand, this gives him a vested interest in recommending someone who will succeed. He's most certainly in for a culture shock in the ways of lower tier football and its budget limitations. On the other hand, he has no illusions about how seriously to take the program. My money's on him not going home at 5 p.m. on the dot to have a home cooked meal. I'd guess he's sitting with a box of Domino's in his lap pouring over film until the wee hours with his assistants there for the duration. The thing I fear the most is the 5-year deal. At the money UNT is reportedly paying per annum, five years is one helluva commitment to an unknown variable. I hope to the deity of your choosing that I hear 3-year deal this week. I'm probably not being realistic in this hope. -
A game like that, against a pretty good BCS team, coming down to the last play, and this board is dominated by bitching about coach speculation. Thanks for seeing it through seniors. It took a lot of dedication to stick out those four years.

That the message board software capitalizes the first letter of each word in a topic title changes the meaning of this thread completely. I thought I was going to read about people hauling off with waterless urinals after the game or something.

Shouldnt Dignity Alone Prevent This?
oldguystudent replied to emmitt01's topic in Mean Green Football
And nobody is positing that 70 bowl slots is perhaps a tad too many? I recall two years ago that there were 68 slots and exactly 68 eligible teams. Might as well just have 60 bowl games so everybody gets to play. -
Why Is Unt A Hard Place To Win?
oldguystudent replied to MeanGreenGlory's topic in Mean Green Football
Good God! I'd just graduated to the big boy potty! That game winning trick play was the single ballsiest thing I've ever seen in sports. I'm glad for Boise that it worked and sometimes wonder what might have become of their program had it not. -
A certain school that shall not be named went 25-5 with a 15-1 conference record in 2000-2001 and was snubbed by the committee. They got the NIT consolation prize.
