The Love Shack-Denton
oldguystudent replied to KRAM1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I can only chalk it up to it being about where you grew up. I feel the same about Whataburger as you do about In-N-Out. They're good burgers. Great customer service. I like them. But if I were to leave the great state of TX, I wouldn't particularly miss them. Why? I didn't eat them when I was growing up. I hung out in high school with my friends eating double-doubles with my friends. There's a deep emotional connection to that. For an extreme example, go try Chico's Tacos in El Paso. Those things are the most disgusting fare in the known universe, but citizens of El Paso, who otherwise have access to the greatest Mexican food in the United States, swear by them. Why? That's what they grew up with as cheap comfort food with their childhood friends. Now that some would choose to use such things as provincial fighting words, I find that odd. I consistently see both sides of this argument get pretty heated. I suppose for some reason, we use fast food to project deeper regional differences on each other. So it goes. -

I fairly rebutted the comparison between In-N-Out and Love Shack. But for the record, In-N-Out processes their hamburger meat daily and ships daily to each store. The patties are never frozen (In-N-Out stores famously don't even have freezers). I eagerly await my first double-double in several years. However, I also plan on checking out Love Shack in the immediate future. The two aren't comparable to me. Sometimes you want the best order in Spanish only Mexican food in town. Other times you want Chipotle. Doesn't make either one wrong. -

Dude, I await with salivating anticipation at the opening of In-N-Out. I will make that drive, and I will order 750 double-doubles. Oh yes. I will. But comparing In-N-Out to a place like this isn't right. Have you looked at Love Shack's menu? It's a different plane of burger, man. -

Quail eggs are quite tasty. You really should try them next time. -
Interesting Article On Coaches Salaries
oldguystudent replied to UNT90's topic in Mean Green Football
Jim Grobe, Wake Forest -- $2.9 Million salary. 62-60 over ten seasons. A case for or against throwing gobs of money at a school traditionally not big on football? -
Not to explicitly disagree with you without having the pertinent information, but I'd be curious to see what the bottom line figures are for football and basketball when insurance, travel expenses, scholarships, and other expenses are accounted for.

25 Worst College Football Experiences
oldguystudent replied to MCMLXXX's topic in Mean Green Football
If they're going strictly on attendance, I'm surprised San Jose St. didn't make the list. Between laughable attendance and severe cuts in state funding, I'd be surprised if they even have football in five years. The only reason I can see UNT being excluded from the list would be the tailgating experience (not mentioned in any other reviews) and the retirement of Fouts. Otherwise, pretty small crowds watching miserable football. Of course, that should all change shortly. New stadium, new coach, and hopefully, a win or two every few years. To resurrect a favorite phrase from 2008, "Good things are happening for UNT!" -
At approximately the mid-point of the regular season, the conference RPI for the Sunbelt conference is 6 out of 32 conferences. Troy leads the way with an RPI of 24 and a solid grip on a post season berth. The Trojans beat Auburn 14-6 today for a quality SEC victory. Louisiana Lafayette is sitting pretty at 69 before beating #22 Rice in Houston today. They should see a nice jump tomorrow. Western Kentucky should jump up tomorrow from their current RPI of 80 with a 15-5 trouncing of #25 Louisville today. Predictions for W/L needs for the remainder of the season to get a post season berth, exclusive of conference autobid are: Troy 14-13 Louisiana-Lafayette 19-9 Western Kentucky 22-6 South Alabama 21-8 Monroe and South Alabama are not officially out of the mix, but their remaining W/L needs are at such astronomical levels that we say wait til next year. There's a solid chance the conference gets two bids with an outside shot at 3. The Sunbelt has been getting a lot better in recent years and is poised to position itself as a legit national conference.

As soon as I even saw the headline, my very first and immediate thought was, "Jerry's got a hand in this somehow."

A partial list from Fox News of mass shootings in the United States going back to 1991. My not using a calculator math tallies 153 deaths over 20 years. Explicitly not a comprehensive list, and not to be taken lightly, for sure, but if it's a statistic to be alarmed about, then most certainly automobiles should be banned immediately per the NHTSA's own statistics for annual fatal accidents. I actually post this to refute both sides of this argument. For the pro-gun carriers, the frequency of nutjob shooting sprees is just simply not even a statistical blip on the radar compared to other causes of untimely deaths. For the anti-gun carriers, the frequency of nutjob shooting sprees is just simply not even a statistical blip on the radar compared to other causes of untimely deaths, and allowing CHL holders to carry guns on campus won't likely change that. My guess (somewhat swayed by my time spent living in LA) is that most shootings in the US are one-on-one affairs between acquaintances, not random acts of fatal violence in public venues.

Crap. I should probably have known that.

In the 80s, Houston, UNLV, Georgetown, Villanova made the Final Four. None of these are in major conferences today, nor were they then. Ca. 1978, Cal State Fullerton made the Elite 8. In the early 70s, Long Beach St. was a perennial top 5 team before Tarkanian took off for Vegas. How 'bout Marquette in the late 70s? Go back a little further? We get your San Franciscos and CCNYs. Conclusion: More parity in the good ole' days than now.
-
I'm more inclined to believe that the dynasties and their constant moves toward exclusive super conferences are a parody of parity.

The Libyian Situation
oldguystudent replied to KRAM1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
People, please! 5 pages of bickering without addressing the important issues! What I would like to know, nay, need to know, is how tasty is Libyan pie, and do they make a sour cream blueberry? -
No 2007-2010 football wins mentioned, so no effect unless you want to beef up the final record of Dickey.

KRAM, To a certain extent, I tire of this statement. I don't however mean to single you out. That said, I will join the Mean Green Club and start making donations to UNT athletics when: 1) I actually graduate 2) I get a handle on the impending $500/month for 15 years loan payments 3) I secure non-ghetto housing with plumbing that actually works 4) I am comfortable that my kid is properly provided for and her college experience funded I'm at a net worth of zero, count 'em, zero dollars. My entire financial everything went to the bride. I have some rebuilding of my own to do. In the mean time, I would ask that older, more established alumni not discount me for the priorities that I hold. Edit: The "you" and "me" in this post are intended to be in the royal form, as in general "you" and general "me," not KRAM and OGS.

That is a great idea that has been done before, but with one caveat. If UNT is going to build a baseball stadium, it really, really, really needs to build with the intent to host in the post season. Requirements for that are a minimum of 3,000 assignable seats (so grass berms don't count). Now, you can assign seats on metal benches, but the intangible reality is that seat backs are the standard. What some schools will do is 1,000-1,500 seatbacks behind home plate, then run the metal benches down behind the dugouts. But seriously, putting metal benches as the sole seating option would be akin to doing so for basketball and calling it a division 1 facility.

Turn Out Turn Off The Wac Lights Please !
oldguystudent replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
If we're going to pretend that any of this is related to sports other than football, San Jose usually has a pretty good post season caliber baseball team, and basketball has up years and down years. I'm pretty sure I recall them making the tournament a time or two in the past decade. Of interest in looking this up, is that I see Eastern Washington playing a few WAC teams. Has anyone mentioned them as a candidate to move up to FBS? -
Why Aren't The Networks Carrying The Big Games?

Cut the cable about a year ago, and it's been wonderful. -
I wonder if the rank and file season ticket holders secretly hate him.

There are a thousand scenarios running around in my head as to what really went down to cause Riley to decide to transfer, and none of them are pretty. But there's no denying that both he and his father have chosen to take the high road in the public forum and let whatever behind the scenes happenings lie where they are. Let them both leave with dignity and let UNT focus on moving forward in this new era.

And Your Starting Qb At Unt In 2011 Is...

Remind me what kind of injury Thompson suffered. Chase Baine did pretty good during his stint. No idea who the Juco is. Something tells me it'll be ok. -
4 Teams You Would Like To Home & Home With
oldguystudent replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
This whole SMU/TCU thing would actually be pretty cool because each team would essentially get two extra home games. That would make eight games a year that SMU/TCU/UNT fans could attend without having to visit Expedia, and that would be pretty cool. It would also be great for attendance for all three schools. If I should happen to be repeating something that's already been stated on this thread, I apologize in advance for not having read the whole thing. -
I've always preferred to call it Leland Stanford Junior College.
