Good: We have a 3-game home winning streak! Bad: Hurricane force winds blew our tent out of the ground and destroyed it. Ugly: We have a 3-game home winning streak, and still people seek out reasons to bitch, bitch, bitch. Unbelievable, and really, a bit shameful.

I got a promotion at Fenway once, and made a major sale at an El Paso Diablos game once. Do those count?

So I tried to pick up my student ticket yesterday
oldguystudent replied to oldguystudent's topic in Mean Green Football
Somebody's gonna' have to explain this parking thing to me some time. The only trouble I've had is finding a time when I can unload for the tailgate without 3 "cops" in a golf cart riding up and threatening to tow me. (Still haven't found that magical approved "drop-off" time). Other than that, I drive up 35, exit Bonnie Brae, turn left, give three cops in a golf cart a parking pass, drive in, and park. After the game, the traffic is forced out the east side of the lot onto the 35 service road, where I easily pop on the freeway and head on home. Took less then 10 minutes to get out last home game. Granted, I've not tried going to the Fouts lot, so I don't know what that traffic flow is like. -
Yeah, I wasn't really conscious of any Texas schools growing up. Didn't register with me on sports or academics. I'd heard of SMU, knew of the Longhorns because Chris Simms was on some magazine cover, and Texas Tech when Bobby Knight went there. But I had no idea where any of the aforementioned schools were located, what their mascots were, if they were good schools or good athletic programs. Nothing. It just didn't register. So, to this thing of these conferences spanning from sea to shining sea, and national recognition blah blah blah. It's strange to me. I would much rather watch Cal North Texas play Stanford SMU, or to a lesser extent, San Diego St. Texas St play Fresno Sam Houston, than I would watch Cal North Texas play Syracuse or San Diego St Texas St. play ECU. I'm sure that somehow, it'll force the television revenue to increase, but it'll make me personally even less interested. Edited because THIS IS A NORTH TEXAS BOARD!

People at SMU think things! Sometimes those things are related to UNT!

So I tried to pick up my student ticket yesterday

In all seriousness, I think the idea was to add valence to the tickets for the students, thus bringing a bit more commitment on their part to actually show up. Didn't end up working out that way though. -

I have no idea who you are, so wasn't referring to you at all. I was referencing a Will Smith quote from Men in Black where he says, "I make this suit look GOOD!" I, on the other hand, don't make anything look good. -

You know what the difference between UNTCrazy727 and me is? I make this green shirt look HORRENDOUS! -
I can tell you from the perspective of the MBA program that there is a move away from quantity and toward quality. Thankfully, I snuck in before they made that decision!

We'll need signs! Lots and lots of signs! -
I went to the student union, but found that they're only giving out tickets from 10-1, and I only have night classes! Now I'll have to WALK to the stadium ticket window, carrying the extra weight of my student ID card to the game! And I'll have to make that arduous journey two hours early! How can the AD be so insensitive to us students who invest so much of our hard borrowed money into this program via our duly elected student fee? I'm outraged! I haven't even received a personal letter from Coach McCarney this week! How else am I supposed to know how to express my school spirit without personal communication from the staff? I pay virtually NOTHING into this program! I demand to be heard!

UNT - arbitrary score ULM - other arbitrary score angry GMG.com post count regardless of W/L outcome -- 2,534 But seriously, the line has moved in ULM's favor this week from -3 to -6. Even with a small turnout in attendance, the newfound home field advantage negates that, and UNT pulls away with a win by a margin of 10 points.

Replay On The Big Board In Apogee
oldguystudent replied to MeanGreenWithEnvy's topic in Mean Green Football
You may be right. It may have been Sun Belt rules. The memory gets hazy. -
DII would have only worked until the 1991 season when the NCAA, with few exceptions, required schools to field all sports at the same division. UC Santa Barbara had to scrap their football team because of this. They were D1 at everything else with a D2 football team. Non-scholarship 1-AA in the Pioneer or Patriot League would work, but the travel expense would be enormous, and I don't know if they even existed at the time UTA dropped football.

I recall in Fouts during plays under review that the video screen had a statement that it is against NCAA rules to show a replay of a play under review. -
The prospect of bringing back football is intriguing, but I'd say they've got a major facilities hurdle unless they want to pay Jerry a million bucks a game to play in a 75% empty monolith.

One small thing from last Saturday tells me that Mac is parsecs beyond the previous staff. 1st quarter, UNT is in the red zone facing a fourth and one. Mac sends out the offense, implying they're going for it. ULL is caught off guard and has to burn a timeout. Mac kinda smirks, and sends out the field goal unit like he'd been planning to do all along. That's a man that understands the subtle things that win games. On field execution comes with capable players. Given our roster, who are fine young men, I think this coaching staff is getting maximum production.

First Year Head Coach Wins Again At Ark St
oldguystudent replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
That would be really funny if it weren't so sad and true. Besides, as an alum of a crappy, but high scoring football program, how could I ever credit you with coming up with such a witty remark on your own? -

I had dinner last night with a woman who'd gone to SMU during the lean years and a man who'd gone to New Mexico. Throwing in the horrendous experience of basketball at my undergrad along with the past few seasons of UNT football, we all had a good, commiserative laugh at enduring the losses. In nearly 20 years of being out there in the working world, I don't think I have ever once had a colleague give me hell about attending a school with crappy athletics. Generally, I'm too busy outproducing them, cuz, you know, capitalism. A favorite AM Radio phrase comes to mind. "America! Love it or leave it!" Honestly, if being a fan of UNT athletics is so freaking miserable across all possible aspects (winning pct., uniform, scheduling, coaching staff, parking, facilities, conference affiliation, lack of phone calls, too many phone calls, beer in the stadium, no beer in the stadium, win blowing out of the east, lack of coddling recognition from all involved entities from the president of the university all the way down to the corn dog vendor), then by all means, stop torturing yourself and put your hard earned entertainment dollars to better use elsewhere! Jesus, it's such a buzz kill coming here and reading the self loathing crap that gets posted every day. I reiterate. It's a game. Played by kids. That we watch. With beer. And BBQ. Among friends. These things are supposed to be fun! As for making your fandom part of your identity, I doubt a single person here will have it on his headstone "Husband, father, community stalwart. Cancelled out by being a sad alum of a crappy football program." -
Ah! Why, yes! I do apologize for so rudely omitting the top hat and cane!

I shall buy you all the soft drinks you want during the game as a reward.

Please pardon my extremely rudimentary graphics skills, but I hope you get the design idea. I think something like this would speak for itself, no words necessary.

Mountain West, Conference USA merger could benefit UTSA
oldguystudent replied to gangrene's topic in Mean Green Football
It's an interesting question. BYU and Hawaii are examples of schools that have done this with BYU parking everything but football in the WAC and Hawaii going MWC in football, but Big West in all other sports. It really doesn't make sense to me, but I do feel that it illustrates the hyper emphasis placed on football these days in comparison to all other sports combined as well as clamoring for each and every television dollar the schools, conferences, and NCAA can squeeze out of the American viewer. I can't see why either the MWC or CUSA would refuse the other sports of a potential new member if said new member wanted full-blown affiliation. It just doesn't make sense. Both want to remain relevant in basketball and baseball, which then leads down the slippery slope of refusing women's sports. On the other side of that coin, why schools such as BYU and Hawaii actively choose to have their other sports in different conferences, I just don't know (although we're really excited to have Hawaii in the Big West). -
I don't think you caught the tongue planted firmly in cheek in his post.
