  1. Bill Gates came from family money and used family capital to get started. It's game time, so I'm not going to look up the others, but even if they are completely self made, that's 5 people out of 300 million, which statisticians would call statistically insignificant. In fact, that's worse odds than hoping for the powerball to come in.
  2. The very definition of the top 1% is really skewed, and an inappropriate target of increased taxation. This is because, as you've just stated, it's got a really fleeting membership. There are a LOT of people out there who get lucky ONCE, have a great year of income, and get taxed all to hell for it, then return to the 99% where they belong the following year and ever after. The 1% people are angry at would more likely be the top 1% of asset holders. Those guys are the ones using the system, and the population to increase the contents of their ever growing toy chests. And I don't care what the AM dial tells you, no individual can, simply by pulling up his boot straps, go from having nothing to becoming one of those guys. You've got to build that kind of wealth over generations. As to a sense of entitlement, does no one here feel that you should be able to get an education, go to work in a job that applies that education, and earn enough money for a decent house, a couple reasonable cars, a new pair of jeans every couple years, and maybe a day or two a year frolicking in the pool? Yeah, you don't have that right as long as there are 2.6 billion Indians and Chinese who are better educated, harder working, hungrier, and much, much cheaper than you. That's what I'm mad about. Should I just passively allow 100 years of collective American prosperity across all classes simply evaporate because Steve Forbes needs another nickel per share earnings by selling my job up the river to graduates of Indian Institute of Technology?
  3. Get a dome. Go back over the entire history of the Texas Rangers, and you'll find an inflated W/L record at home during the months of July and August. Other teams find it too hard to come play in the sweltering heat. You may think of this as a home field advantage, and it is, but it can mask overall team weaknesses come October. Get a dome, and you'll see what your team is really capable of, and you can build accordingly.
  4. I cannot tell you why that struck me as being so funny, but I lol'd.
  5. So I mentioned in another thread that there is a big display in the Willis Library of UNT Football History. I just found the digital version of that display here. Just know that nothing whatsoever remotely related to UNT football took place after 2004. Nothing at all. Move along, there is seriously nothing to see here. Edit: I think Apogee is a slight improvement over the original digs.
  6. Heh. There's a big display of North Texas football history in the Willis Library right now. In that display, there is a HUGE, glaring omission of these four years that seemingly never, ever happened.
  7. Wall of text thrown at the attention starved internet generation. I'm sure you said something really cool, though.
  8. I'm pretty confused by this. I was commenting on two things. 1) One full ride scholarship granted to a male athlete does not necessarily equal one full ride scholarship granted to a female athlete. 2) Full ride and partial scholarships exist. So if a football player has a full ride, and two female athletes are sharing a single scholarship, then the football player would get the $2,000 and each female athlete would get $1,000. I could be very, very wrong though. I don't understand the complexities of how this stuff works, which is why I used an expression of conjecture in the first place.
  9. An intriguing question, but I'm not entirely sure that ESPN likes anybody.
  10. UNT -- X number of points ASU -- Y number of points Greeks drinking in the parking lot -- ∞ Students heckling punters -- not enough and uncreative
  11. I'm not sure that's completely accurate. Flyer seems to be the resident expert on this one. Title IX isn't a dollar for dollar match men's to women's scholarships.
  12. We all mock socialism, redistribution of wealth, and hatred from the have nots toward the haves. Until it's time for conference realignment talk.
  13. I tend to just sit outside the tattoo parlor drinking in the parking lot. I never actually go in.
  14. Boise St doesn't have men's soccer or baseball, two priority sports. At a nice even ten teams with Hawaii, I can't see the Big West letting them in without either sport. Plus they've got wrestling and gymnastic, which would likely compete in the Pac-12. Nope. No thanks. Let them go somewhere else.
  15. It is a lot of work, and it's paid a lot more dividends than just drinking a few beers before the game. That said, there is NOTHING wrong with tailgating out of the back of your vehicle. I believe that is the origin of the term, yes?
  16. Best post I've ever seen you make, Lifer. So good, I went to +1 it, and found I already had done so. With the notable exception of myself, a hopeless lifelong screwup, every member of my fraternity went on to successful professional careers (mostly in medicine and law), married great women, and are raising great children. We took aimless children, taught them responsibility and teamwork, and turned them into men. That there may have been a game or two of beer pong with a coed involved is acknowledged, but it was always safe. Never a drunk driver, never over the line activities, and a very, very early and strongly indoctrinated education on liability and risk management.
  17. Never, ever, ever admit to that on this board. It is better to say that you eat puppies for breakfast.
  18. We set up on the hill at about 10 or 11 Friday morning before the lot closes. Once those gates close, even if you've got a Victory Hall parking pass, you aren't getting close enough to carry things. We cart coolers and valuables back to the cars via dolly about 30 minutes prior to kickoff, then get the tents/tables/bbq on Sunday morning, again, when there are no restrictions in the parking lot. So, with proper planning, no special MG fees necessary. Just lots of free time.
  19. By continually obsessing over their every action from our thrones in glass houses that they kill themselves smacking their own foreheads. But not until the AD needs another favor and begs them to come out in force for another student vote.
  20. I've found this to be the general mantra at UNT, yes.
  21. They're still trying to come up with math that refutes the 2011 season-to-date home win total equaling the sum total of home wins from 2007-2010. There will also be 4-color charts demonstrating the opportunity cost in quantifiable reduction in good husbandry.* *Yes, that was intentionally misused.
  22. Well, the remaining two home games are 3pm anyway, aren't they? I do like the earlier game time myself, but then I haven't had my kid in sports for quite some time. Getting home after 10 makes for a long day.
  23. There are 35 bowls this year, so 70 bowl teams. I count 67 teams with 4 or more wins right now. It's a pretty fair bet that 6 wins gets us in. If we make 6 wins, and get left out, there's not a lot of room to argue given who we've beat. Nonetheless, there's still a very reasonable chance, and that's really amazing!
  24. This thread. THIS is what we need to be talking about! Meaningful football in late October! We're 17 point dogs this weekend. I say let DT throw the damn ball and we bust this thing open, once and for all!
