His winning percentage was nearly 2 1/2 times better than what we had to endure at Fouts.

Football team should hire this designer
oldguystudent replied to UNTexas's topic in Mean Green Football
I generally detest uniform threads with the passion of a thousand white hot burning suns, but those things are pretty freakin' sweat. -
I heard that Al Davis is suing the Alliance from beyond the grave because he flew over Denton at 35,000 feet once and claims it as part of the Raiders television market. Makes about as much sense as everything else being said right now.

LSU Board predicting JJ next head coach
oldguystudent replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
In an otherwise very, very dark period of UNT athletics, there was never a Johnny Jones Equivalent Futility List published. That he succeeded like he did in the environment he did it should speak volumes. Also, he bought me a beer at a football game last season, so...yeah. He's good in my book. -
Your Promo Ideas To Fill Wing Section Every Game?
oldguystudent replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Hey man, welcome to the board. Just as a matter of clarification, I was taunting some others who are constantly going on about the ills of the greek community. I was a member myself once upon a time, and I welcome our new couch sitting, beer guzzling overlords with open arms. -

Are you kidding me!? That might attract the Greeks! -
Yes you have. Players that good used to stay in college for four years. UNLV was in our conference back in the day. The year they won the national championship. Oh dear god.

Couches and kegs in the endzone seating area. -
We tailgated on the hill all last season with a 400lb BBQ. It took dedication to pull it off though. We set up on Friday afternoon. OK, that part wasn't awful. But then we came back on Sunday morning to get that behemoth out of there. Headaches, rain, and really heavy objects do not make for pleasant Sunday mornings. Bottom line, yes, you can bring a smoker, but come around 11am on game day, you're not getting within 200 feet of the hill with your vehicle.

Todd Dodge says he's back in comfort zone
oldguystudent replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Todd Dodge is back in my comfort zone. Far, far away from Denton. Not only was he horrific at the X's, O's, and most importantly, the W's of college football, but he also carried such an SLC cult of personality with him that as a new fan of UNT football, I found him incredibly divisive. Love him or hate him. Nobody had a lukewarm opinion, and that made for some heated debated among people who are supposed to be on the same team. -
Once again, I put blame for this squarely upon Rick's shoulders and think Johnny should be fired immediately.

So it says, "Faculty under contract." What does it mean for the future of tenure? Two good reasons that professors should be allowed tenure, even with some of the crappiest faculty members I've met in my life hanging out in crevices. 1) Academic freedom. You don't become Tier 1 by forcing your faculty to come up with research topics and results that agree with the opinions of the regents, the general public, or your average Mean Green Football fan. Sometimes you even breed the occasional Timothy Leary or Ted Kaczynski. Other times, you breed Nobel laureates. 2) See #1 and tell me how UNT would attract any decent faculty in the future if it's a true at-will employment policy that would guarantee nothing? Out there in the real working without a net world, they give you contracts, but tenure is an implied lifetime contract. You give me opportunity at Arlington and Denton, one has tenure, one has at-will, guess where I'm headed.

A Noble Lie

I believe it was when Rosie O'Donnell went for a morning stroll in search of a Klondike Bar that the twin towers met their demise as she lumbered by. -
I made my first official alumni contribution today
oldguystudent replied to oldguystudent's topic in Mean Green Football
Joe, I believe you know where I worked during school. Choosing to dump my life at 36 years of age, go back to school, and start all over, caused some dark, dark times for me. I lost pretty much everything that I ever was. But there were people here who stuck by me and supported me even when I lapsed and bit the very hands that fed me. There were professors in the accounting department who took it upon themselves as a personal mission to see to it that I came out of this not just alive, but a better person than I was when I started. They succeeded in their mission. I may have gone to one of those "public ivies" for undergrad, but those guys never, ever showed any caring about what I became once I left. My experience at UNT has been something I never expected, and it felt pretty damn good to write that check today. I believe I have an obligation to see to it that UNT continues to take its primary mission of taking young people and turning them into quality professionals, and good human beings so personally. -

And thusly, unsure of your intent, I returned volley with an equally ambiguous response. If they ever invent beer pie, I'd be honored to order you a slice a la mode. -

So does that mean I can have a valid opinion now? Good. Here it is: 1) I'll show up at Apogee whether we're playing Texas Southern, LSU, Sunbelt, Alliance, or Denton High. 2) As long as there are bats, gloves, and baseballs involved, I could not care less about the logo on the cap. And for that matter, nor could I not care less about the helmets in football. We're sports fans, not metrosexual fashionistas for Lord's sake! 3) Rick Villareal has been good for UNT. Period. 4) That said, we all make mistakes, and I will hold a lifelong grudge against Todd Dodge and his vaunted football system. 5) Basketball is not my sport. I don't enjoy it. But watching Tony Mitchell play. Well, a beautiful athlete is a beautiful athlete, and Tony is a work of art in motion. 6) I have experienced no problems with parking or tailgating at Apogee, and the walk ain't gonna kill us, tubby. 7) If I found a hundred dollar bill on the ground, I would buy a twelve-pack of 120 minute Dogfish Head IPA and a couple cigars of dubious origin. Somehow, I think this would work regardless of whether the bill was wrinkled or freshly ironed with starch. 8) I loved hanging out in Denton. Potheads and all. It's a great little town. 9) UNT provided me with an education that got me gainfully employed right out the door, and for that I will always be grateful. Texas Voter ID Law
oldguystudent replied to KRAM1's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I could not care less about Voter ID laws. There are any number of ways to tilt the polls in one's favor (Gerrymandering, anyone?) But all this talk on ID. I've always wondered if it would be possible to travel from, say, San Diego to New York City without having to show ID or leave an electronic or paper trail of one's self. I haven't figured out a way to do it unless I take a series of cash withdrawals in my home town over the course of several months and bicycle across the nation with a tent and a backpack full of cash. Somehow, that doesn't much sound like the land of the free to me. Recall also that the Social Security Card was originally explicitly intended to NOT be used as a form of ID. And now? It's everything about you past, present and future. -

College baseball is a completely different animal from MLB. Time and time again this experiment has failed. -

When we go searching for a coach, is Southlake any good at baseball? What, too soon? -
I'm from Los Angeles and can drive downtown blindfolded, but I wouldn't recommend that for visitors.
