Interesting New Helmet Design from Vicis
oldguystudent replied to Christopher Walker's topic in Mean Green Football
I just read on another forum that soccer is getting rid of headers. I mean, I get it, but it's so strange to me to remove what for me was such a fundamental part of the game. I scored one beautiful goal from a corner kick off my head in high school. Not the only goal I ever scored, but that one, I still remember like it was yesterday. It's an unfortunate reality that this too must pass.- 32 replies

I'm about to lose my spot in the Benford gets fired pool. I originally had tomorrow as the date of firing until @TheTastyGreek gently reminded me that termination on MLK day would not look so great, so I moved it back to Tuesday. Playing .389 ball, where the wins have come against lower division teams and horrible, horrible barely pass for D1 teams, but nothing. Not a chirp. I'm going to invest in dry cleaning.

My other alma mater is sitting at 15-5 right now with an RPI of 48. They don't have football, but damn the basketball is picking up. I'll watch that, not this for the time being.

Meanwhile, Lawrence Phillips' family has agreed to donate his brain to the concussion study. Something's going to give eventually.- 32 replies

There's really nowhere for the department to go but up on both high school relations and ticket sales. Even going to the Rice basketball game last week, buying GA tickets at the door, was a hassle that I nearly walked away from. Everything has to be so f'ing hard.

The in vogue rule that coaches are imposing is banning players from bars. I think we might ought could seriously consider such a rule here.

Never had the privilege of encountering them, but it sure does seem to be a common thread among quarterback parents. There are a couple I can name, but won't, who I'm glad to see gone for no other reason than their parents.

12 team minimum for title game is gone.
oldguystudent replied to Coach Bill Lewis's topic in Mean Green Football
That would be akin to the mass exodus from the WAC to form the MWC. I don't see Utah playing that game this time around though. That PAC money is too sweet, even at a smaller percentage interest, than going into some nether region conference with the other three teams. -
The "Come To Jesus" Conferences Thread
oldguystudent replied to HarringtonFishSmeller's topic in Mean Green Football
ESPN has pretty much been a godsend for me. It's weened me from watching MLB, big time college football, and college basketball. The NFL has taken on this task itself with its unwatchable product. My weekends have become so much more free save the five or six home games a year at UNT. Going to watch professional sports or big time college sports in person has already priced out the average person. When I was a teenager, I could mow a lawn and get enough money to buy a box seat at an A's game. Today, I've got to spend a week's salary of grown up money to get the same ticket. Now ESPN has done the same for merely watching sporting events on television. Eventually, this bubble must burst. But maybe not. Luxury suites and bars paying for broadcasting may keep it all afloat. The NFL, MLB, and college basketball and football are catering to their own "Group of 17," and you and I ain't part of it. As for UNT, I'll keep going because I enjoy the overall experience, even if we are the worst team in this history of the nation. It's just going to be a shame that we've built this beautiful stadium that'll see crowds of maybe 5,000 when the illusion of us playing big boy football is finally gone after the P5 splits off. -
How Much Is the UNT Football Team Worth?
oldguystudent replied to Coach Bill Lewis's topic in Mean Green Football
T. Boone has given $250 million. Considering that's like one year revenue for a big program like Alabama, I would think you'd have to define "make a big difference." If you want a national contender, then none of the figures you listed, even if combined, would be enough. -

No. No cheesecake for the masses. That's asking too much. However, kettle corn in the club, dammit! FTFY. Gotta honor those shitty conference television contracts, you know. -

When I win the lotto tonight, I'm putting in my bid to be principal owner of the Mean Green football team. I shall require a suite encased by green velvet ropes. I shall also reduce the price of beer through the stadium. -
I'm kinda shocked he didn't get the head coaching job. The governor of Hawaii was set to approved special funding to keep him in 2007. Nonetheless, he's had ties to Hawaii for years and years. The whole reason he left his interim gig with the Chargers was to return to Hawaii. High school coordinator position sounds like he gets to semi-retire in a place he loves. I used to really like the guy before he sold out to SMU then tried to bolt to ASU. Now, I don't much care where he lives or what he does.

Bad season? This yellow journalistic hack has the temerity to claim we had a bad season? Hell, we're better than the national champion! -

How do I get a gig as a shitty music writer? Surely I could write as poorly for the unwashed musical masses as he must. -

I can only imagine what this message board would have had to say about it had it existed in 1956. I suspect that many of the home crowd weren't too amicable either. Denton still had segregated high schools until 1963.
