How long will students put up with paying for nothing?
oldguystudent replied to UNT90's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't know how the stadium referendum was written, but I highly doubt any student vote is getting them out of their part of the bond obligations. I'll remind most here that when all this was going down, and in subsequent years, the take around here has been mostly, "They don't want to pay an athletic fee? F'em! Let them go somewhere else!" I'm not concerned about any student vote that's going to even marginally threaten any current athletic fees. However, I wouldn't be looking for one red cent of increase anytime soon. As far as student pocketbooks are concerned, we've reached equilibrium. Meanwhile, on the alumni side, I'm fascinated in watching this all unfold. The class and economic warfare going on would make for a great Netflix original series. -
Promotion ideas for next year's men's basketball games

Bring a paper bag to wear over your head and get 50% off your tickets, if we're able to actually process the purchase. We'll call it, "Sack'n Save" -
Haase leaves UAB for Stanford (official)

Good. Stanford was eyeing our coach at my other school, and I didn't want him to go. -
MGB: Former UNT QB Riley Dodge arrested
oldguystudent replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
You know how when you're faced with a routine traffic stop, you just never know whether he's going to be a good, compliant citizen (99%) or a violent crazy nutcase out to kill you (1%)? So you have to treat all drivers with the same amount of caution because you just never know. That's kinda how I look at police. When I'm forced to interact, I am all yes sir, no sir, of course officer. But I avoid contact as much as humanly possible because I never know when or if I'm going to encounter that 1%. Over the years, I've come to have a zero tolerance for drinks to driving ratio just as an insurance policy. If you see me having so much as a 12 oz can of Bud Light at a tailgate, I'm taking uber. I've got to treat all traffic stops with equal caution. -
MGB: Former UNT QB Riley Dodge arrested
oldguystudent replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
There is a big part of me that sees any trials and tribulations coming the way of the perfect husbands and fathers Dodge family and enjoys some serious lulz. The more rational part of me, however, if the Dodge side of this story is correct, points to the absurd levels some laws have been taken. I would argue that the vast, vast majority of people on this board are guilty of worse after any given UNT football game. -
UNT Funnels Millions Into Money-Losing Sports

Generally they do so with HUGE golden parachutes. I'm befuddled at how much CEOs consistently get paid to fail. /tangentrant -
MGB: Benford says he will be back, confident in future

Next homecoming opponent then? :ninjaface -
Have you ever tried that walk-up transaction? If it's anything like basketball, good luck with that. Something the department needs to realize and improve immediately: Their aloof incompetence that sneers at the little guys trying to give them money is driving people away a whole bunch more than the loss column is. You act like you're doing me a favor when I'm trying to give you money, and you make it damn near impossible, only call me when I raise a public stink, aren't very nice to me in the process, tell me that what I'm seeing on my computer screen isn't what I'm seeing on my computer screen, and then tell me, "Oh, well it's sucked because of the staff we had in place, but those people are all gone now." Great, can I order some wing zone tickets on my account? "Um..er..um..let me transfer you." I'll refrain from the ubiquitous personal attacks on anybody employed by the university. I'll stay quiet on the dismal win/loss totals. But I won't back down or remain silent on fundamental operational dysfunction. Fix that shit. Nor will I back down or remain silent that it matters to me that the regular Joe fans are fleeing en masse, regardless of what small percentage those unwashed masses of peons provide to the overall financial picture. The athletic program is, in economic terms, a public good. It should be enjoyed by all. We talk about providing scholarship opportunities for athletes that would otherwise be unable to enjoy an affordable college education. That's a legitimate and fair argument. On the other side of that coin, let's talk about alumni who without an enjoyable athletic program would otherwise be unable to enjoy an affordable family sporting experience. To quote my favorite Statler and Waldord line, "Why do we always come here? I guess we'll never know. It's kind of like a nightmare to have to watch the show!"

Looks like about $2,293 a year. I very, very rarely buy merchandise any more because I can't keep up with the proper shade. I haven't really been drinking at games for a couple years, so no bar purchases. Food and soft drinks are included, so no extra expenditures there. This number is inclusive of my mean green club donation, since there isn't anything I could realistically allocate that to outside of football. I spent a little on the SMU road game last year, but it was negligible going through John Williams for the bus and the ticket. Do we count the rare occasion when I find myself a little too entertained in Denton and spend the night in one of its fine lodging establishments, or are we counting only money paid directly in to UNT?

And I don't waver on that stance. Not today, not ever. Just strange for me to see the strongest opposing voice change his tune. -

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you've been an advocate for aggressively, unilaterally raising the student athletic fee to its legal maximum for quite some time without any though of whether it does any good or benefits the students. -
MGB: All quiet on the hoops front
oldguystudent replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I think @TheTastyGreek needs to roll out his analysis of just how hard it is to get to the tournament again. It's not like going to a bowl game where 90% of the teams get to go play in a participation trophy game somewhere in the diesel fuel soaked outskirts of rural BFE. The tournament is 68 out of 351 teams, the vast majority of those from the big P5 (or basketball equivalent therein) conferences. -
ESPN is gonna have to hustle. They've been soaking the American public to the tune of $6 a month from every household in America for a good long while now. They got greedy, took control of freaking everything, and BOOM! People don't want cable anymore. So ESPN is going to have to more realistically go to something like $20-30 a month for people who actually want it if they wish to continue dominating the live sports coverage that they enjoy today. Judging by what people pay for Sunday Ticket, I figure they'll get it eventually. They're still just trying to cling to the old, easy, screw you and pay us no matter who you are because we need hundred dollar bills to snort coke off our Craig James hookers ways.

Terrible News About the New Media Deal
oldguystudent replied to Side Show Joe's topic in Mean Green Football
This television bubble thing had to burst eventually. Not just for CUSA either. I kinda wonder how many programs are gonna get hung out to dry over financial liabilities accrued in the days of easy TV contract money. -
Terrible News About the New Media Deal
oldguystudent replied to Side Show Joe's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't know. I go to Lewisville, and it ain't no Apogee. Neither are any of the FBS Sunbelt/CUSA/AAC stadiums I've been to. Allen cost about the same as Apogee, and still doesn't win a head to head battle. Even if it means giving the slightest, most undetectable nod in the general direction of RV, upwind where nobody will every see it, Apogee is a very good stadium. I won't say the same of the Super Pit, I certainly wouldn't have said the same of Fouts. I don't feel that way about the softball field (Although I heard they finally got bathrooms). But Apogee is done right. -
Terrible News About the New Media Deal
oldguystudent replied to Side Show Joe's topic in Mean Green Football
I mean, I know it's the fashion du jour to violently hate everything and everyone with such a white hot burning passion that our collective blood pressure could power a relaunch of the space program, but on Apogee being one step above a high school stadium, I will politely disagree with you, good sir.- 39 replies

Maybe on topic, maybe off topic. Just an observation on perceptions that people have. A couple days ago, one of the partners brought me a box full of client data. The client had taped the shit out of the box, so naturally I pulled out my pocket knife with its monstrous two inch blade (I just measured it to verify) to cut through the tape and get the box open. The reaction was nearly as if I were going to shoot up the office, grow a beard, and publish my manifesto. So I guess what I'm getting at, particularly in this new era of open carry (of which I've still yet to witness), is how do you implement things like campus carry without scaring the bejesus out of people and possibly causing a horribly adverse reaction in an era where using the wrong word brings faculty terminations and campus protests?

Just checked on Stephens. Last game was March 5, 2011. Thread announcing her termination was March 11, 2011. So you're right. There is still time. -
