  1. At least they went with a logo that can stand the test of time. The "daffy" eagle or the "evil parrot" eagle just wouldn't cut it for the longterm. The logos are really growing on me (still don't like the Wordmarks or pride sayings), and I think they look really classy on shirts and memorabilia. I got a new shirt from Housing the other day - it looks really sweet. I've already gotten a bunch of comments on it. Now I've just got to make a trip to the Bookstore or Voertman's to stock up on the right colors... I haven't been to campus in a bit - anyone know whether or not they've got all the new green in yet?
  2. We just bought our season tickets last week... been saving up for months for this one. We even convinced one of our buddies (still a UNT student) to get season tickets with us..... 3 new season ticket holders. I can't wait for football season!
  3. Man, that's a tough one. Had to agree with eppy4life in voting for the Engineering School. Accredited schools and colleges make NT look even better academically. It also makes us competitive with TAMU and UT in terms of the wide range of programs that we offer. I do have to say that the Rec Center is probably pretty far up there as well. I worked in Housing for about a year, and honestly, you wouldn't believe the number of students who were attracted to NT because of the Rec Center. Usually, that's not the first reason they looked at us, but the Rec Center helped seal the deal.
  4. Ok... so it's bad news, but it could be a lot worse. At least he's giving the university ample time to find someone new. And perhaps with the success of our athletics programs over the course of this year, we might be able to find someone as innovative, determined, and supportive as Norval Pohl. Whoever gets the job next has big shoes to fill. Dr. Pohl, you will be missed.
  5. You're absolutely right about there being just as many underage non-greek drinkers as there are greek underage drinkers. My comment was in no way meant to single out the greeks as being the only underage drinkers. My point was that I saw a large group of students sitting around in the parking lot when they should be sitting in the stands. If they make the effort to show up at the stadium, the least they can do is go in - especially since it doesn't cost them anything. And honestly, the underage drinking isn't what I have the biggest problem with. Although it's wrong, it was the absolute trashing of the parking lot that really irritated me. (that and the 4-year old I saw playing with beer cans) When students, or anyone else for that matter, sit around in the parking lot during games, they tend to leave their trash wherever it sits on the ground. That's no way to treat public property, and especially the school that's giving you an education. I would love to see a large greek fanbase at NT. I've been going to games for the past four years, but I have yet to really see them at games. Maybe they aren't advertising that they're greek all that well, but I haven't seen more than five of them at a time at either football or basketball games. If they really are there, then I'm more than happy to see them. It's just in my experiences, they haven't been there. As for doing my part, I was there with the Residence Hall Association at every game I could possibly attend. Some other organizations do support athletics. I wish more of them would do the same.
  6. That's a great idea! Personally, I don't see why people don't get into the game a little earlier anyway. Although the Green Brigade does a great job, it does get a little old listening to "Fly Like an Eagle" 50 times. (I'm sure they get sick of playing it.) However, it's a lot of fun to watch the team warm up and get in a few taunts to the opposing team while they're on the field. In just about any sporting venue, fans arrive early to the games. I can't see why it wouldn't work at NT. In response to a few earlier posts, I think there should be a rule against loitering in the parking lot during games. I don't think that will make students angry, as some suggested. Students don't loiter in the parking lot during the week (or non-gameday weekends for that matter), so why should they be upset during the game? People who hang out in the parking lot during games are generally not doing things that are either legal or intelligent. If nothing else, it's not a bad idea to have a few campus police patrol the lot on occassion just to make sure everything's okay. Last year, I left during the 2nd quarter to meet an out-of-town friend coming late to the game. On the way to meet him, I passed three different fraternities (this is not a slam on Greek life - just stating the facts) standing around listening to teeny-bopper music and drinking. I would bet my favorite NT shirt that more than half those kids were underage. That fact aside, with all the stuff that's been going on with fraternities on a national level lately, wouldn't it be better for them to be at the game, supporting our team? Recent posts on this board have indicated that many greeks value their relationships within their organizations even above (although a close second) to their alma mater. It would be nice to see the two intertwined a bit more. If all those greeks sitting out in the parking lot during games would come in and watch the game, rather than drop their letters off at the field and leave, our stands would look much better. We might actually be able to make the stands look like that stupid sorority picture they used to post on the website all the time.
  7. That's good to hear. I just wish they'd get some more stuff for the alumni. I went to a few of the events, but I only encountered a handful of people, and while very nice, they were about 50 years older than I am. (Not that there's anything wrong with that) All they did was serve snacks and look at old yearbooks and chat. I think it would be great to get some of the younger alums involved. We may not be able to contribute as much monetarily, but I'd certainly be more than happy to go to some college fairs and high schools, talk to some students about what NT offers, and tell them how much I enjoyed my stay. I'll bet a lot of the younger alums feel the same way.
  8. For those of us who do not get the FWST, could you please post the online link? Thanks
  9. Why don't we have more chapters? I know of tons of alums still in the area, and yet we don't have meetings or anything? Not accusing anyone of anything, but out of curiosity, what does the NT Exes do with our money?
  10. Does Lewisville have an NT Exes chapter? I see people with stickers everywhere, but I haven't heard about an actual chapter. Also, the Exes called my husband ('03 grad) about donating money and stuff. He said he wanted to renew his membership, since it had expired. The girl told him she'd send the right paperwork in the mail so he could get re-signed up. 3 months later..... still nothing.
  11. Hey - that's my hard-earned NT Biology degree at work
  12. I think they're going to start caring. Last year, even when the student's section was full, they wouldn't allow students to sit in the empty season ticket seats. They're a bit more lenient with season ticket holders, but if the student's side is full (as I think it might be), you'll have to stay in your assigned seats.
  13. You're thinking of tryptophan. (sorry, I know I'm a nerd)
  14. Correct. They're making all season ticket holders sit on the alumni side now. I too am a recent grad and was looking forward to sitting with some of my friends who are still in school. However, they're making more room in the student's section (which is a very good thing) so I can't complain too much. At least now the alumni side will be a bit more rowdy
  15. So how exactly do you go about getting one of these fan guides?
  16. The mascot name was originally Scrappy, and it was changed in the late sixties-early seventies by the hippies to "Eppy." In 1994(?) the university changed the name back to Scrappy because the students felt that "Eppy" was a stupid name.
  17. But the report also mentioned that Byerly didn't pass enough in FALL and spring. So it makes you wonder how close he was to the line going into the spring semester. If football takes their academics as seriously as track does (and I'm sure they do), there is no excuse for not doing well. Those kids get every academic advantage they can possibly get for classes - free tutors, study groups, progress reports..... that doesn't even include all the resources at your disposal as just a regular student! The athletes are here for an education, and it's a shame that some of them don't take advantage of all of their resources. I think overall NT has done an excellent job at keeping our players eligible, but when your starting QB has a problem, someone somewhere dropped the ball.
  18. XBOX holds up better?! Man, what's that say when a Microsorry product has a longer shelf-life than other products. Actually, I have it on pretty good authority that if you're using an XBOX, get the product replacement plan on EVERYTHING. Otherwise, it usually breaks down. As for me, I'm a GC girl.
  19. Man, they don't have much faith in our defense, do they?
  20. Mi Casita has good Mexican food. They're on Carroll, right near the square, and they also have a drive-thru on University. The Johnny Carinos in Denton is the best one I've ever eaten at. They've got one in Lewisville, near my house, but it's not nearly as good.
  21. I attended FO in 2001. They were starting to include more spirit activities (thanks Emmitt) and pride and tradition into the whole orientation process. The only complaint was that they gave us white shirts. Anyway, I look at the incoming freshmen now, and they're all wearing their super cool shirts from Orientation (wish I could get my hands on some) and really getting excited about NT. The Eagle Camp was an incredible idea to really get the kids going. New Student Mentoring is pulling out all the stops- and now for the entire year! Now they even provide mentoring and stuff throughout the first year for freshment (FYE). My little sister is looking a colleges right now, but I can tell you she's VERY impressed with the level of committment to the students present at NT. After her tour of the campus, she even got a hand-written postcard from the girl that gave the tour. Whether she attends NT or not, she can sing our fight song and will always have fond memories.
  22. While working for Housing, I had the opportunity to talk to Richard Leary (#9) a few times. He was very excited about NT's prospects for the season, and even the LSU game. I was very excited to see that a JUCO transfer has so much pride in the team. He's even predicting a NT victory at LSU. While I'm not going to get my hopes up, it's that kind of leadership and drive to win that we missed on the defense last year. If Leary is an indication of the attitude of the NT team, this year is going to be something special.
  23. I think the season ticket numbers will increase in the next few years because of the increased student involvement on campus. I agree with marketing more to the students than alumni because you have a lot greater future benefit in numbers. Now, I agree that we need to increase season ticket sales and get more Dentonites out to the games, but in a lot of ways, that's a short-term fix. When you market to the students and get them loving NT before they graduate, students are more likely to participate throughout their lives, giving more money and time to the university over the long haul, which is what makes a program truly successful and long-lasting. That being said, I'd like to point out something on the board that I think many of you have forgotten about - the value of time. As a recent grad and newly-wed, my husband and I can't contribute as much financially right now as we'd like. Think back to when you just graduated, were looking for a job, or just got married. How much money could you really spare? But we volunteer our time to Sunday Funday and other NT events to show new and prospective students just how much we love NT. Perhaps the key to marketing to the Denton area is that of time. This year, I volunteered at the Benbrook Relay for Life, where TCU participated and had many of their starting football players. I walked away from that event more impressed by TCU than I have ever been before. They played football with the little kids, auctioned off TCU paraphanalia, and raised more than $500 for Cancer research. What I saw was a real connection with the community. So why can't North Texas do that? They hold the Denton Relay for Life at Fouts, but does North Texas really participate? Do we ever send our athletes or students out to schools to referee Field Days or read to students? The answer to some of these questions may be yes, but in my years at NT, I never really heard of the school really participating in the community. If it happens, it's not advertised. Now, before everyone jumps on me, I understand that money is what brings in scholarships, pays for a new stadium, and gets us national recognition. I think the money will come in time, if you just be patient. I know many of you have been waiting for a long time, too long, but with RV and our current administration, I think things are definitely heading in the right direction.
  24. I just can't help but think there's more going on in Roger's personal life right now that's escalating his reactions. However, I think that he's acting very selfishly toward his teammates in that he can't control his anger enough to pitch when they need him most. I'd like to point out that that series against the Angels was crucial to the rest of the season. At this point, it's hard to say whether or not the Rangers can pull out a division win, since the Angels are determined to play good ball. That being said, I don't think that suspensions should be paid. How much of a hit to your pocketbook is it when you get a 20 game rest, get paid half a million dollars, and pay out $50,000? I think the real root of the problem here is that MLB has so inflated its players' egos with irrational salaries that players have forgotten why they play the game and what their real worth is. No player is worth $250 million dollars. Not even Satchel Paige or Babe Ruth. I'll get off my soapbox now.
  25. I don't think we should get our hopes up for major growth in enrollment numbers this year. Last year, everyone thought that we'd siginifcantly increase our enrollment, and we only grew by 122 students or so. As far as game attendance numbers.... I think RV has done and is doing an excellent job generating excitement for the games. Our attendance numbers will increase because Freshmen O, Eagle Camp, and other organizations are instilling NT spirit early. Even though overall student enrollment may not increase, I predict a fairly significant increase in game attendance, especially among freshmen and sophomores.
