  1. I saw that as well. Well, he is alumni who played football, and I know he keeps up with the team. One night, we even sang the fight song..... I'm sure it was done intentionally.
  2. Now that's a great idea. Every now and then, I see a poster or announcement on the classroom boards, but not very many. I think if we can get the students' interest early, our season attendance will improve as we go along. Does the Athletic Dept still recruit a few crazy fans to go driving around campus advertising the game the Friday before?
  3. The residence halls are kept stocked with all sorts of posters. You won't need to worry about them. Moe Clouse does a great job of making sure everyone knows about the athletic events. Remember those bracelets last year? Those were her idea.
  4. Hat World and Lids are owned by the same company, Zephyr. However, LIDS is a bit more likely to carry NT gear. They have hats for lots of really obscure colleges, as well as some of the big names. The one in Vista Ridge Mall has a pretty good selection of older hats, but we're waiting for the new design before we get replacement hats. You can go into any LIDS (and probably any Hat World) and ask them to order the hat for you. I'm not sure if it costs extra, but the friendly folks there will be happy to tell you.
  5. Tentatively put me and my husband down. He's got a really crazy work schedule, so we're still trying to work things out with that. I will post if we can definitely attend. I'll be bringing a dessert. Can't decide between keylime pie or some sort of green thing. Any suggestions?
  6. You might want to consider major retail outlets, such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Target. Major restaurants such as Hooters, Johnny Carino's, Rudy's, and Outback Steakhouse might also be good places. Of course, I think the best place to make sure there's plenty of advertising is right around the North Texas campus. Hooya already has a new "Think Green" poster and would probably be willing to put up more. Katz might put something up, as well as Chicken Express, Cool Beans, and the like. Most of those places already support North Texas in some way, shape or form, but it can never hurt to ask.
  7. Lids is selling North Texas hats with the new logo. Check them out at the links below: New NT Hat NT Hat with Name I like the first one best. The two hats are available online for less than $20 for memebers, and just a bit over $20 for everyone else. Jason and I will be checking out the Lids in Vista Ridge Mall tomorrow to find out if they're selling them in the store yet. I'll post when we find out. However, if it's not in the store, they can still order the hats for you.
  8. Usually, you can pick one up for free from the Athletics Ticket Office. They generally have a few great freebies to pick up, with posters for several sports, as well as great lawn signs. Also, you can get the little pocket schedules from there... While you're at it, if you haven't had the chance to buy season tickets, go ahead and get them. The friendly people at the office will be more than happy to help you out.
  9. Having been both a commuter and resident, I'll throw in my .02... Before just deciding to purchase a P permit, determine when you're going to be on campus, and where your classes are located. Many of the lots, especially the P ones, fill up very quickly (like 8:00 AM). Always keep in mind that the permit is a license to hunt, not a guarantee of a space. You should allow at least 20 minutes before class to find parking - especially if your classes are mid-day. If you are living on campus, don't bother driving to class unless you've got classes at Research Park. Just purchase an R permit (residents only) and park behind your hall and walk to class or ride the shuttle. R permits and P permits cost significantly more than G permits. I don't know what the rates are for this year, but last year, the R and P permits were about $40 more than a G permit. As to when to get your parking pass.... You can purchase your P or G permit from the UNT Bookstore (middle of campus on the 2nd floor of the Union) about a week or so before school starts. Be prepared to stand in line for a bit, and have your license plate number handy. If you want to purchase an R permit, you can do so on the Housing website, http://www.unt.edu/housing. The form is available when you sign in to your eHousing account. Hope this helps, and welcome to North Texas.
  10. I'd really like to see the eagle head. I think it's a little more symmetrical and compact, which would make it look sweet on the field. I wouldn't mind having the NT logo on there either.
  11. Because (this being the Bible Belt) many women will be home with their families on a Sunday afternoon, or just getting out of church. A Saturday might be a bit better.
  12. You want to keep the pocket schedules in areas of high traffic around Denton. Some places on the square might also be an idea. Over the past few years, more and more businesses are supporting NT, but we really need to talk to the business and get more of them on board. I personally tend to frequent places with NT banners or signs posted. If we could get some larger student organizations involved, it might be worth marketing to businesses that they'll receive more student business if they support NT. Of course, if you're not careful there, that could be considered blackmail.... well, it's an idea anyway.
  13. I see Hawaii dropping down to I-AA moreso than them going independent. Or rather, if they do go independent, they'll end up I-AA very quickly. The only reason Notre Dame has lasted as an indpendent is because of the great TV contracts and the history of the school. Hawaii has neither. I think it is becoming increasingly difficult for Hawaii to stay in a conference because of the travel expenses and their lackluster football performance. You can pretty much write off any traveling fans, so they can't really help opponents reach their NCAA attendance requirements for Hawaii away games. Basically, it all comes down to money. The trip over, while a great vacation, is not pocketbook-friendly.
  14. Why does Rashod Smith, RB from FIU make the list? Ok, so he had more than 1,000 yards in one season. But did he win the NCAA rushing title? hm?
  15. At least he sets high goals. I think Waters has made great strides in making the SBC a more respectable conference. He had a lot of really good answers to the questions, and I think his upbeat attitude makes a difference - despite all of the SBC conspiracy theories.
  16. Didn't realize we went to the playoffs in '89. When I was there in '97, we had a winning record, and everyone said it was the best we'd had since Johnny Perkins. I just remember well the 35-0 loss to Graham (3-A) for Homecoming. <_< My sister is a senior this year, (played soccer) and they were very glad to move to 5-A. Granbury will fare much better in 5-A than with having to play Stephenville, Brownwood, and Cleburne every year. Great to hear baseball is still doing well. I was a little worried with the loss of our TCL team (now the Denton Outlaws), but baseball has always been pretty good in Granbury. So has the softball. If you have a chance to check out the girls fast pitch, I highly recommend it. Although the high school team has suffered from inept coaching for several years, there's a lot of talent down there.
  17. Is that a hint? Joking aside, I think it's a great idea. An interesting way to get the fans to connect with the team. If the wife/girlfriend is interested in the game and understands what's going on, she's more likely to go to games and enjoy them. Also, I think it would be neat to do a couples do a conference. Train the women, then let them go toe-to-toe with their respective guys, and see how well the guys know football.
  18. The kids were treated poorly. I won't argue that. But I just feel that it's somewhat shady that they get their choice of schools. I realize it's not fair to the kids any way you look at it, but I can't help but feel that this kinda breaks the whole purpose of the UIL. These players will have the opportunity to choose which school they go to: This means they can pick the school that promises them more playing time, a winning season, or better training for college. What I like so much about high school football in general is that players have to play where the district lines lie. I realize that some students/parents/schools bend the rules a bit, but overall, the challenge for the coaching staff is to take what they've got and build a great team. Coming from a high school that hasn't made the playoffs since Johnny Perkins in the 60s, it just doesn't seem fair.
  19. They did make top 25: 17. Cobbs, Patrick Sir 21. Thomas, Jamario I think the real shame is that they didn't make top 10 - or top 15 at least. Most of those guys will never be heard from again, but mark my words: JMo and PC are special. They'll be starters in the big show.
  20. Man, that's really tough. I'd been hearing about the Wilmer-Hutchins problems on the radio for a while, but I hadn't really thought about the impact on their sports programs. This really makes things difficult for the seniors this year. But allowing them to possibly choose between several different schools - isn't that a violation of UIL rules? A few years back, my hometown girls Basketball coach got in all kinds of trouble for getting a girl to transfer over for her senior year. Still, UIL or somebody ought to do something for those players so that they still have a chance at college ball. For some, that may be the only shot they've got at attending college.
  21. Considering that JMo won the rushing title last year and broke the record of consecutive 200+ yard games by a freshman, that list is full of crap.
  22. I believe that the university requires that students maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 in order to graduate. If those students can't maintain a GPA high enough to graduate, they need to re-evaluate their academic goals.
  23. You're absolutely right. Which tells me that if 76+ athletes are able to take care of business, there's no reason why those four can't. If they're truly having trouble in school, then they should either consider switching majors or learn what their priorities are. I think that althetics around the country babies their athletes in general. I realize that the athletes have grueling workouts and oftentimes miss class for games or tournaments, and I can and do appreciate the hard work that they put in. However, too many people forget that these kids are here for an education, and that is paramount to winning a conference or playing in a bowl game. I think RV does as good a job as he can with the students, and I truly believe that he has the best interests of the players at heart - regardless of whether that's what's best for athletics. This is what puts him in a bind, and I don't envy him the job he must do. Not only does RV have to watch out for the well-being of our athletics and maintain the reputation of NT, he genuinely cares about the students, and wants to do what's best for them. I think if anyone should be blamed besides the student, then you can place it on DD. He's at the bottom level with those kids, and a good coach knows what his players are up to and makes sure they take care of business. I'm not blaming DD because I don't think it's his fault, but I think that we can attribute the failure of those athletes to themselves. And to "The Fake Lonnie Lynch" I'd like to point out that NT continually excells in athlete academics. While some universities' athletes major in Communications (not dogging the Comm majors out there who legitimately earned their degrees), our athletes major in Engineering and Biology.
  24. I think you can only blame the system so much. I mean, these football players are adults who are responsible for their own actions. They shouldn't need a babysitter walking around, making sure they study when they need to. If these students are serious about college and about football, then they'll do what needs to be done. They've got every resource the university can give them, at their disposal. You can lead a horse to water...
  25. I hope we'll stay with the black. I know a lot of people on this board really don't like the black, but with the lighter shade of green, I think it will really make the unis stand out.
