That's a great idea! If we can get the kids involved young, we might have a bunch of future North Texas alumni. This is the kind of marketing idea we need.

Gotcha. I had it confused then. Still, it seems to me that LJ is doing an awful lot of micromanaging. His goal should be (and is stated as such) to serve as a liaison between the state and federal legislatures and the University system. He should be able to implement system-wide policy such as faculty policies, system positions on certain issues, and so on. However, it should be (and is stated as such) the job of the individual presidents to oversee and maintain the facilities and general upkeep of the individual campuses. Therefore, it makes sense to me that since UNT Athletics is a function of the main Denton campus only, the image and maintenance of said department should be under the stewardship of the Denton campus president. As long as the image conforms to the overall image of the University system (in this case as a D-1A major university), it's none of the chancellors *!@ business. When you try to micromanage too much, you end up spoiling a good thing... something about too many cooks in the kitchen.

NCAA removes Seminoles From Hostile List
untgirl04 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
I remember someone grumbling about it, but to my knowledge, nothing was done to change the mascot or official school nickname. I'm pretty sure it's still Rainbow Warriors in NCAA 05. -
Why is the Chancellor so powerful at the university? I thought that the President was supposed to be the highest authority. Maybe I've got them confused, but my understanding that the Chancellor was just a nice name for the guy who runs our two little satellite schools.

I hope you were joking. Personally, I think Go_UTA has a valid point. I welcome the outside opinions of those who can perhaps see our school from a less green-colored perspective. Although Go_UTA does not have (I'm assuming) such a vested interest in our great university, I still appreciate his/her comments and well-wishes.

NCAA removes Seminoles From Hostile List
untgirl04 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Anyone know if the Rainbow Warriors are on the list? Because that's clearly hostile toward the native peoples of Hawaii. Good for FSU. I wish other schools on the list the best of luck as they fight this stupid ruling as well. -
EW!!!! Honestly though, think NT spray around Fouts before the games begin? Since we've got so many later games this year, I don't think it'll be all that great for our visiting prospectives to get rained on by crickets. Tortillas, yes, crickets, no.

Thank you, Rick for organizing the BBQ. It was a blast to meet the players and offer them encouragement for the season. I had so many of the stop me and thank us for such a great job. Without your hard work, Rick (and the excellent brisquet), it wouldn't have been such a success. We enjoyed meeting all of you and putting faces to the names we've seen so frequently on the board. We look forward to seeing all of you at other events and at tailgating and the games this year! Go MEAN GREEN!

We are not the only one rebranding!
untgirl04 replied to letsgiveacheer's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, we did do a few things. I know the "official" unveiling ceremony was mostly alumni and the media, but a few of the organizations have been advertising. Housing had hundreds of new shirts made up, and is passing them out to anyone who walks by (not sure if they've got shirts left). They're not only the new logo, but the new green as well. In addition, the bookstore has really started stocking up on the new stuff. I wish we could have gone to the new green this year, because it'll be confusing to see people with 14 different shades of green, but I guess you can chalk it up to us being a liberal arts school expressing our own freedom of color. -
That makes sense (the removable logo). I seem to be in the minority, but I'd like to see the eagle head. It's just a little more similar to our previous logo. (I don't count the parrot eagle because I wouldn't even consider that a logo)

GOMEANGREEN.COM BBQ event for the 20th

Rick, About how many cookies do I need to bring tomorrow? I've got 3- dozen right now. -
Man, I really like the kid's composure. I'm also impressed that he arrived two weeks early to begin learning the system. That's some real dedication. Whether he starts this year or not, I think he'll be great for us in the future. Also, he sounds like a very humble and unselfish guy. I think he'll fit right in with the great guys already on the team.

I don't know why anyone would argue about Meager's toughness. Rehabbing from injuries is no walk in the park and it takes patience, dedication, and a whole lot of tolerance for pain to completely get it done. That being said, I kind of wonder whether Meager is maybe not doing something in warm-ups or something that he needs to keep himself limber. It might be something they haven't discovered yet - different needs for different players - but it's just a thought. Although I like Meager as a QB and I wish him well, I'm half-reminded of the Ranger's Justin Thompson. The Rangers drafted the kid - a 90+ mph fastball slinging southpaw - to be the future ace of the Rangers. Then, Justin tore his rotator cuff. After surgery and rehab, he got back on the mound and two or three games into his assignment, tore the cuff again. He tore his rotator cuff THREE times before the Rangers finally quit resigning him. I'm not saying that Meager is the same way, but it is something that you have to look at. Earlier, someone mentioned how many concussions Troy Aikman had and how he still played the game. The question is, do we want a guy to have to do that? At some point, you have to be concerned for the player's health. I'm sure Meager is giving it all he's got on the field, but at some point you have to say, "We appreciate your hard work, but you've got to stop for your health." I'd really feel bad if Meager pushed himself too hard and ended up without the use of his arm at the age of 30. Playing professionally is a bit different. Guys like Aikman and Steve Young were getting paid millions of dollars to go out there and take a beating. All the while, they were putting that money away and planning lucrative commentating deals once they were done (well, Aikman at least). Meager's still got most of his life ahead of him. He's still got to finish college and find a career. I say, if Meager can stay healthy and prove he's #1, let him play. But DD should also get other guys some reps, just in case. Either way, I'll be out there cheering for whoever is our QB.

This year is really a question mark with so many new starters. We may do ok in week one but MTSU is the game that will likely start telling us about the season. A slow start is explainable this year with so much inexperience in the beginning. ←

Good question, and I don't think the answer is an easy one, so I'll just cover all my bases. 1. Yes. If NT wins the SBC again, but several other schools are bowl eligible and make it to an open bowl game, it just increases SBC prestige. NT still comes out on top, and if we win the NO Bowl, the SBC is seen as an emerging conference rather than the dregs of Division I-A. 2. No. If NT continues to dominate the Belt, but our conference-mates continue to make ESPN's Bottom 10 each week, the Belt just looks worse and worse. And if NT doesn't win the NO Bowl, the conference looks like a laughingstock. I personally believe that the Belt is getting better all the time, and doesn't get near enough credit (especially when you're being compared to $40 million + athletic budgets). Overall, I think that everyone is touting our game with them as a "must win" because it's a great goal - we've got a great conference winning streak right now, and we're 4-time conference champs. It's fine for the other schools to have lofty goals, but in reality, all of their games are "must win." Even if they beat NT, if they lose every other conference game, it still means spending the bowl season on the couch at home. Our conference rivals need to concentrate on getting the job done with all of their games and quit worrying about what's going on up at the I-35 junction.

UT lost people to grades? I had a lot of friends down at tu when Cedric Benson was playing, and the word was that he flat out never went to class. If he can pass the classes without going to them..... must not have been any of their "studs."

I was at that Oklahoma game two years ago.... although it was disappointing, our boys did put up a good fight. The refs were horribly biased (too bad the SBC doesn't give US that kind of home cookin') and there were some seriously missed calls. They'd just abolished the 5-yard halo after catching a punt (stupid, really). Can't remember exactly who our punt returner was, but he got flatlined before the ball even got there, and the refs didn't call a thing. Even the OK fans were yelling about that one.

COBBS & THOMAS ON THE FRONT PAGE OF USA TODAY!
untgirl04 replied to Baby Arm!'s topic in Mean Green Football
Well, later on in the article, it mentions Dickey looking out in his brand new office on the other side of I-35 and laughing. They do hint that we are working towards getting better facilities. Although the facilities press isn't the most positive piece of news, the bulk of the story was about how awesome our two RBs are. THAT'S great publicity. Every HS running back in the country should be calling up Dickey right now and requesting auditions. We should have lines coming out the back of Fouts! -

NT Collegiate License Plate UPDATE
untgirl04 replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
It's all those Yankees from up north who've ruined the driving. If you visit some of the smaller, less Yankee-fied towns, you'll find the folks are much more friendly, and much more likely to be going 10-15 miles BELOW the speed limit. -
So what can you do if they've got your name and SSN? The site's got all kinds of information about credit card information, but I'm more concerned with them using my SSN or Student ID number...

But Cornhusker and Sooner are offensive titles referring to historical terms for settlers. Shouldn't that be banned too?

Although New Orleans does have a certain amount of mystique, I think the Ft Worth Bowl might be a nice change of venue. 1. Because the bowl is so much closer to the UNT community, many fans who cannot make the long drive out to NO (kudos to those of you who do) might be able to make it to the Ft. Worth Bowl. We would certainly have a larger showing than the meager Ft. Worth bowl attendance last year with our fans alone. 2. NO has a lot of stuff to do. I realize, for the fan that this is a great bonus. There are plenty of places to drink and gamble and get immersed in that Cajun atmosphere. However, that is also a major distraction for the players. I wasn't able to go to the NO Bowl last year, so I had to content myself with a watching party. The commentators mentioned over and over again how "Dickey's boys" were partying and staying out late for the nights preceeding the game, while Southern Miss was very focused and concentrated only on preparing for the game. That wasn't the kind of thing I liked to hear about our school. While our boys deserve a break and a bit of vacation after a very tough year, they are down there to play football, and sometimes it's easy to get distracted with other things. 3. The Fort Worth Bowl has a later bowl date. There is a certain amount of hype for the first game of the season, but with the Sugar Bowl being in the same stadium, some of the interest gets lost in the hype for a much larger game. The Ft. Worth Bowl would afford us the opportunity to be more in the middle of the bowl season, as well as have a game in a stadium with no other bowl games. Because NT is more of a local team, there's a greater possibility of Ft. Worth natives attending the game.
