I don't really see people getting hit in the eyes with tortillas. Now, in earlier posts about TCU and the Tostitos sponsors handing out chips... I could see that being a problem. In the years that we've been throwing tortillas, I have never heard of anyone being injured by them - except maybe the people who eat the tortillas instead of throwing them. Anyway, I think it's a fantastic moneymaker and can be a great way to get a cool tradition going at UNT (I'm talking about buying the green tortillas at the game). Athletics can sell them for pretty cheap. In fact, get some ziplock bags, print a little logo on it (not too expensive if you do a lot of them) and package the tortillas in those. That way, if people have any left after the game, they can save their tortillas in the special Mean Green tortilla package.... or something like that. If that's too expensive, use paper bags. Have recycle bins outside the stadium (which they should have anyway) and ask people to throw their trash in the proper receptacles. That would even make the tree huggers happy. And maybe athletics could get some volunteer student crews to clean up tortillas after the games - maybe like the "Tortilla Sweepers" or something like that. Give the studetns shirts when they help out, and I'll bet you'll have more than enough people to clean up the mess.

So if Cobbs doesn't make it to the NFL, can we hire him as RB coach? We'll have a vacancy... -

Thank you for posting that. We on the board wish Travis the best, and while some people may be hastily branding him a quiter, it's always important to remember that there are two sides to every story. We appreciate the sacrifices that Travis has made for the Mean Green, and his difficult recovery after injury. We wish him nothing but the best in the future. -
I would not be surprised to see some different plays called during the Troy game for three reasons: 1. We are on ESPN2 and bad games on national TV do nothing for the program nor the "value" of the coaching staff. 2. We're playing a SunBelt team. 3. The coaches will want to show off a little for a legacy coach such as Hayden Fry.

If we lose to Troy, I'll attend the rest of the North Texas home games with a bag on my head.... a GREEN bag of course!

Not only are *good* twirlers difficult to come by, it takes a little time to develop a drill around them. If you've got a good flag corp, you don't need a twirler. The rifles are just "toys" that the flags can play with. It's not indicative of a military band - you want to see military, look at TAMU. Most schools use the rifles now because they have winter rifle twirling competitions. I don't know whether or not NT will participate in those, but they are very difficult to handle, and I have a lot of respect for anyone out there doing a good job (and ours are pretty good) They've still got the flags, so I don't think it's a problem. Overall, I really enjoyed seeing the band out there facing me (first time season ticket holder and first time on the alumni side). The band sounds fantastic, and their marching has significantly improved since my freshman year. I can appreciate their choice of music, NT being well-known for jazz, but I wish they'd change it up every now and then and choose a secular show. I think that could really get the crowd involved. I know it can get a little too high school if you do too much, but I think an interesting Blues Brothers routine, with some costumes and maybe a little flash, could stay in line with the school and bring some more interest to the audience. -
I disagree. The biggest promotion should be saved for Homecoming. Unfortunately, Homecoming is extremely late this year. Oftentimes, students attend Homecoming games because it's just the thing to do, or they know one of the Homecoming court nominees. Then, they end up having so much fun that they attend games for the rest of the season. Thanks to rescheduling this year, that won't be the case, but we still need a good crowd for Homecoming. I think a fun promotion for students would be to continue that "Fan of the Game" thing. Although I think it would be cool to not only put them on TV, but maybe to let them go to the press box for a quarter and watch the game. Or let them jump up and down on the sidelines to get the crowds pumped up. I was very disappointed with our "fans of the game" at the Tusla game. How can you be a fan of the game if you're not even wearing a green shirt?!?!?!
-
How much did we get paid for getting our a$$ handed to us by Tulsa? I'm pretty sure there wasn't a payout there - just supposed to be a bunch of rabid Tulsa fans filling our coffers through ticket sales (which didn't happen). You bring up a good point: teams do improve when they play someone better than them. But you don't improve if you don't learn anything from game to game and make adjustments. I'm not necessarily calling for anyone's head - DD or otherwise. I would just like to see improvement from week to week, and I'd like to see that beautiful chess game we call coaching. When something's not working, you try something new. If we're pretty much handing over the OCC games anyway, why not experiment in the backfield. I have yet to see the vaunted PC-JMo combo used in any creative way. Why not throw to the TE? Why not establish a passing game with 5 wide? I realize you've got to practice what you're playing in conference, but by now I'd bet everyone has DD's playbook memorized. Why not add a little spice, just to shake things up?

This isn't the first time I've heard of the problem. I seem to remember the very same comments coming from many others "in the know" over the past few years. I've also heard some things from former players. This worrys me more than anything. If this sentiment is wide-spread, we have a bigger problem than winning the Belt. If this gets out, we'll have problems getting recruits, keeping our star players, and even winning one or two games all season. I don't like the "sky is falling" mentality, but this really distresses me.

Would you like to see NT recruit more JC's
untgirl04 replied to El Paso Eagle's topic in Mean Green Football
I think balance is key. As we are seeing with this team, a lot of inexperience causes lots of mistakes. Those mistakes are a natural part of learning, so I don't necessarily think the players are bad just because they are making some poor choices. However, I think that recruiting a few seasoned JUCOs could help bring the maturity and focus the teams need. Especially when you are coaching a bunch of talented but young guys, you need some mentors in there to help them out. Although I think JMo has incredible talent, I think even he would say he would not have accomplished so much without PC's tutelage. I realize PC was no JUCO and that he's an exceptional coach (as well as player) but you get my drift. -
Well, there are two positives to take from this: 1. Glad T.J. is better after his big knock on the head last week. He's an excellent playmaker and a great asset to the defense. 2. Aaron Weathers is a stud. The boy has done some major tackling and although the scores don't really indicate the job they're doing, the defense this year is pretty solid. They're just on the field way too often.

Big Dawg, I agree that as fans we should be working hard to bring more people to the games, and with our limited marketing budget, athletics needs all the help they can get in this department. However, alumni can make a HUGE impact on the course of athletics, and even academics, in a university. How many people on this board give money to the Mean Green Club? Anually, how much do you think this board spends on donations of time, food, and money to North Texas? Don't think RV and his staff don't know what we collectively as a board do. When your biggest supporters are not happy with the way things are going, they pull their support - i.e., money. And without money, nothing happens. Just look at TAMU as an example. When TAMU decided to add on to Kyle Field, all of the dead Revillies were not going to be able to see the scoreboard. (I know, it's morbid and a little weird, but at TAMU tradition is everything.) The alumni threw a huge fit and threatened to withdraw support. So, the school disinterred every single one of those dog skeletons, moved them to a location where they could see the scoreboard, and everything was fine. A few years ago, some students wanted to get together to form a cheerleading team. Since at TAMU, only yell leaders are allowed, this didn't wash so well with the alumni. They threatened to pull funding if the cheerleaders even wore maroon and white uniforms with "Aggies" written on it. So, the university pulled the plug and didn't allow the group to form. So as you can see, alumni can do a great deal to influence the decisions of a university. One day, I hope the alumni at North Texas give as much, so that we can be such a great financial asset to our great university. I hope we do not take that priviledge lightly, and that we are responsible with our giving, but that's a thought for another thread. In my long-winded response, I'm finally getting to the point: If the fans (aka donating alumni) are not happy, ain't nobody happy. The people on this board love North Texas as much as you do, and would like nothing more than to see these incredibly talented players reach their full potential. We support the players through the good times and bad and will always cheer for U of NT. However, we have a right as financial stakeholders in the university to voice an opinion when things are not going well. This is not meant to slam the players or make them feel as if we are not glad they chose to play for North Texas. (If any players are reading this, the fans may grumble some, but you're always going to be superstars in our eyes.) But we have a duty to hold the coaching staff accountable for its actions and to demand the best for our team. We may not always be happy, but if you're not ever raising the bar, you're not ever going to get any better. Sorry for the really long post, and if you've read the whole thing, I applaud you for your lack of anything better to do.

Perry recalled the National Guard from NO efforts. I think we're getting about 1000 back here just in case.

Who Should Start At Quarterback This Week
untgirl04 replied to Eagle-96's topic in Mean Green Football
I think Meager's got a few problems, some health related, and especially after Saturday some mental. However, we've invested too much time in him to turn away. I know we all want to make it a 5-peat and have the longest conference winning streak in the record books for a long time. But I think we also have to consider that Meager will be with us for 3 more years. We're all used to Scott Hall at the helm with his presence and abilities, but I believe that given time, Meager can do the same. We can't sit and compare quarterbacks because they are simply two different people with two different thought patterns and physical gifts. Even though I didn't like Quincy Carter as the QB in Dallas, I supported him (at least when other people could hear) because he was at the helm. As a RS freshman QB, Meager is going to be a little vulnerable. It's the coaches' jobs to help him overcome and learn. As good fans, although we can question his playcalling and point out his mistakes, let's not forget that he's still young. If we support him now, we can be part of helping him grow into an outstanding QB. As for Phillips, I'm a huge fan and I do hope he gets some playing time. However, I think Meager is the guy for this year, and I say support Meager now and watch in the off season to see who wants the starting job more. -
I don't like that our backyard isn't clean either. Mostly, I'm frustrated with the growing trend of allowing our athletes to act in any way they see fit, then not suffer the consequences. I promised I wouldn't get on my soap box, but you have to think what this says to young kids. This is a problem in all sports, not just football certainly, and I have a lot of respect for those who do keep their noses clean.
-
Well, at least we're not on the list... Lots of SBC teams though.
-
They could still get him on assault charges. If the county DA isn't too well paid by KState officials, he or she could even try assault with a deadly weapon. I think it's rediculous how easily athletes (college and professional) get away with this crap. I won't get on my soap box, but I don't care how good you are. If you're a thug, or even if you just make a really bad decision, you deserve to suffer the consequences.

We play KState there on Saturday and Troy on October 4, which is a TUESDAY...

I had my family up for the game (sister will be attending NT next fall) as well as my uncle, who listens to games on the radio in East Texas all the time. My parents have been to a few games before, and even they were impressed with the large turnout. In addition, my uncle was floored by the fantastic new facilities being built on campus and by the amazing tailgating atmosphere. I was also excited to see so many fans painted up and dressed in green for the game.

For the most part, I agree with what you said, but I disagree about Troy. No, they didn't win the conference, but they ended up at a better bowl game with better payout and TV slot. Where has winning the SBC gotten us? You don't bite the hand that feeds you, and I'm in no way complaining about what we have already accomplished in the SBC. But personally, I would rather win an OCC game or two (or at least play competitively) in them, and drop an SBC game or two to go to a better bowl game. I realize that's taking a chance that some teams may not be as good, but I think the SBC is at least working very hard to get another bowl tie-in. And with the way things are working in the BCS, I forsee some major changes in the future. Although we wouldn't be able to bring as many fans to a bowl game a little farther away, if we can put up good numbers in the game, and even if we don't win, play respectably, we can garner respect in new states. Respect leads to recruits, and although the Texas well is deep, I would love to see North Texas gain recognition on a more national stage. I realize a lot of this is wishful thinking, and many of you will probably remind me of the "dark" years at North Texas and how we should be thankful that we win games. I know this, and I am thankful, and regardless, I will support my team. But what bothers me is when the kids lose heart. They play for NORTH TEXAS, and win or lose, in my book, that's a damn fine accomplishment. -
I was down at the 40 yard line, near where they put Covington on the bench after he came off the field. They were looking at his pupils and had ice on his neck, a good indication of a concussion. The way he flopped after the hit, and the way he didn't move for a while might mean he got knocked out at first. This could mean several (like 4 or 5) weeks on the bench. That being said, I am not his doctor, nor have I seen his injury report, so this is just all speculation. Either way, I hope he gets better soon. He's a great presense on the field and an excellent player.

Ok, last week, we were talking about how brilliant Dickey's play-calling was. And I'd have to agree. But this week.... Honestly, it's really hard to gauge how good DD really is because he doesn't even try in the OOC games. I could have dealt with a close loss, but 52 points... this is just sad. I am very disappointed with tonights games. But I'd like to say that the guys played with heart. They just got out coached. Hang in there guys, we're still proud of you!
