Neither. It was the main commentator guy for the Sunday game. Can't remember right now which one.
-
They also mentioned that he was from North Texas and didn't make the Cowboy's squad. We sure could have used him this year - on both lines! Anyone know if he donates to his dear alma mater?

I agree with you to a point. However, this is finals week, so I can also understand if fewer cheerleaders, etc attend because they're studying. Regardless, it's unacceptable to have no one there. The cheerleaders should coordinate these things. At the Men's game against Chatanooga, Scrappy wasn't even there. They've got 3 guys for Scrappy - you'd think one of them could have made it.

You know what? That doesn't matter. Just because they're paid doesn't mean they don't take it to the next level. They really seem to enjoy the games, and they're great about getting the crowd (small as it is) excited at points during the game. They do a much better job cheering our team than the cheerleaders. Last game I attended, the cheerleaders just sat in a corner and waved their pom-poms ever so often. That's pretty much all they do at any of the games. You'd think they'd show a little more enthusiasm.

I could handle being a football only member of CUSA for the moment. Once we get the rest of our facilities and after our BBall teams prove we can light it up this year, they'll probably reconsider us as a full member. But honestly, although the Belt is not known for its stellar athletics, our other sports do not suffer as much because of the conference. Football is the only sport where your conference matters so much in determining your post-season hopes. If we can just move into CUSA for football only, I think it would be a major step in the right direction. Of course, this is all just wishful thinking....

If UNT Schedules a 12'th Game for 2006 FB Season
untgirl04 replied to PlummMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
I think we should play a regional team. While this does pose some risks (i.e. recruiting if we lose bigtime), I think the payout is worth it because 1. Regional media coverage. If we create a game like the "Red River Shootout" although on a smaller scale, we can garner media attention - make the whole thing one giant party and contest, encourage student government from each school to make bets on the winner (kinda like mayors of Super Bowl teams do), really drum up student support. 2. Attendance. It's easy for regional fans to travel to home and home games. Even if we agree to play the games on a neutral field (which I don't think is necessary), we can draw large numbers that will improve our attendance records significantly. 3. Rivalry. Students always get excited about rivalry games. If we can create a rivalry, we can increase student support. And that's always a good thing. -
I wouldn't. I just made it to work right off the Denton square, and the roads in Denton are really bad. Lots of black ice. They've sanded the bridges and some of the roads, but there are still too many idiots on the road. I'd stay at home.

Thank you to those who sacrificed for us.

I've been down to visit Pearl Harbor. A very sobering sight. My thoughts and prayers with families of those who lost their loved ones so long ago. And my thoughts with those currently protecting us both here and away. -
It's starting to freeze here in Denton. A little light sleet, but it's not sticking yet. On my way here this morning, hit some ice in Lewisville. Nothing too bad, and most importantly, the bridge is still dry. The nasty weather is supposed to hit here around 11 am. I'll be leaving early.

I think the "free game ticket with purchase of North Texas hat" promotion at Lids was a brilliant marketing move. Not only can we push the new logo and merchandise, we get people going to the games. I'd be interested to know how well it actually panned out. Overall, I'm pleased with the attendance numbers. Although we definitely need to continue improving our average, we're getting there.

Actually, they had to re-inter them after they completed "the Zone." Not saying all traditions at TAMU make sense. I think we can all agree on that one. But you have to admit... when your claim to fame is some horse's butt....

Well said. Coach, I doubt anyone on this board would disagree with you when you say your facilities need upgrading. When it comes to a student's health and safety, the school has a responsibility to provide safe equipment. However, when the high school football team gets brand new uniforms each year, with upgrades in equipment and state of the art facilities, while other schools have opponents falling through the bleachers, something is not right.

Yes well.... you know how Jason is. The NT Exes blanket is nice, but he's already got the one I made for him. Or is that a hint for your Christmas?
-
Thanks for all the great ideas thus far guys, you've been a great help. Yes, he does read this board, but more of a lurker than anything. He's got a crazy work schedule, so he usually relies on me to give him the scoop on what's going on. Plus, he just got Forza Motor Sports, so he's a bit preoccupied now. They aren't selling the mini helmets in the Bookstore anymore, but I'm ordering one from the athletics website (or the cheaper website I saw earlier today). Also... what's up with Voertman's? Half the store seems gone. However, the MGR is a fantastic idea, and I will definitely do that. I'm waiting until a little closer to Christmas so that he can enjoy it for a full year. Keep the ideas coming!

Agreed. Byerly's had his chance. Let Meager and Philips compete for the job in the Spring and move Byerly to TE.

I'm trying to come up with a great gift for my husband this year for Christmas. He's an avid Mean Green fan and absolutely loves college football. So far, I've got him an NT mini helmet with the flying worm logo, and I'm going to the Bookstore today to pick up one from this year. I'm trying to get this year's signed by PC and a few of the other players, if possible. Any other suggestions? I'm on a budget, but I've still got about $100 or so to spend. Thanks!

Grew up an Aggie kid, so I have a sincere dislike for all things burnt orange. Although I'll admit their tribute after the Bonfire was very classy. I don't really care one way or another about TT. Always thought it was kinda stupid to make such a big deal out of a horse statue whose butt points at College Station.
-
I also thought it was a bit unfair to have the game in Houston. If I were the Big XII North, I'd be furious. Even Roger Clemens commented when they interviewed him at the game, how Houston is so close to Austin it's almost like a home game.

Well, we really need our cake and we should get to eat it. I agree that we need to take care of conference games. Win those and ultimately that's how you end up going to a bowl game (see '01, '02, '03 and '04). However, winning OOC games help determine which bowl game you get into. I'm not expecting a win over Texas next year, but I do expect us to be competitive against other mid-majors. If we develop a reputation as a contender in mid-major games, we look more attractive to better bowls and eventually better conferences. As bnr2085 said, if we take care of some of those OOC wins, we shouldn't have any troubles in conference.

It sounds like a good idea. It makes sense that we want to give our contract negotiators (RV) the best possible chance to close the deal. I disagree that they exclude football from the provision. It's like saying RV is competent and should be able to do what's necessary, except for football. Too many strings attached. But other than that, we need every advantage and strategy we can get to remain competitive.

That also coincided with the Rangers winning two consecutive Division championships. (Although they still couldn't make it past New York - stupid Juan *chokes in big games* Gonzalez). Anyway, post season appearances, as well as a new owner who had big bucks to spend on marquee players contributed just as much to the sudden increase in attendance. Also, hosting the All-Star Game at the Ballpark adds tons of national exposure. At the time, that stadium was one of the most state-of-the-art facilities in MLB. However, your comparison is not completely off. Our post-season appearances (also losses except for Cincy) have contributed to an increase in our fan base as well. However, we haven't been able to bring in those marquee players to bring excitement to the games. JMo and PC are good starts, but we need more marquee or at least exciting players to bring in more average fans.
-
I think a CUSA membership would lead shortly to a new stadium. With added local publicity and a better share of the national TV market, we would have an easier time finding that "big time" donor or corporate sponsor. With the recent upgrades to Fouts (scoreboard - yay! no more angry parrot eagle! - new turf, upgrade to the Ben E. Keith deck) I think Fouts is tolerable for a a few more years. No, it's not the most fan-friendly environment, but it's definitely better than it was. And if it's filled, the atmosphere is great - even if you are 3 miles from the field.

DMN blurb: Cobbs invited to 2 all star game
untgirl04 replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
I think I'd like to see that. -
Don't forget about Cody Spencer! I have a feeling Brad Kassell had a lot to do with him getting picked up by Tennessee, but I look for great things from both of them in the future.

Congratulations to Patrick Cobbs. He deserves every accolade he gets. I wish we could have sent him off in better style, but I'm thankful for the years he gave North Texas and I look forward to watching him on Sundays.
