  1. At least Mick Jagger is more animated than Paul McCartney. However, halftime shows have been lackluster for the past 5-6 years. But at least it wasn't Aerosmith, Brittney Spears, and Justin Timberlake.
  2. If you dream of a playbook full of draw plays up the middle.
  3. It mentions in the article that Malone is just interviewing for the Arizona St. job - he left North Texas without another coaching position. Did he decide to leave because his mentor, Bell, is leaving, or is he leaving because of something else?
  4. A pulmonary embolism would be considered one of the "big things" and kinda fits with the whole heart thing. I think your guess about a panic attack is really good though.
  5. so did we not get Godbolt either?
  6. I don't think this list is entirely accurate. They don't have Godbolt listed.
  7. ??? Reports yesterday quoted him as committing to K-State. I think either he had a sudden change of heart (unlikely), or the Telegram is wrong (again).
  8. I think you should reserve judgement until after the Combine. Cobbs has ability as a special teams player, which many running backs do not. Although Cobbs is not particularly large, he has a way of running through defenders that I think NFL scouts and coaches will be able to appreciate. In addition, Cobbs's National Rushing Title does carry a bit of weight, as well as his solid performance despite playing on a bad team this past year. It will also depend on how many teams need running backs and special teams players. Of course, after the kicking year this year, I think Bazaldua has an excellent shot.
  9. That's not good. My thoughts and prayers with the Dickey family as they figure out what's wrong.

  11. In the spirit of the brilliance that was the Troy heckling thread, I think one should be started for South Alabama as well. As important as this game is, we need to get together and come up with some coordinated efforts to make this the best game yet. The AD has proven that he can bring people to games - now it's up to us to be noisy supporters. Any ideas?
  12. Just wanted to say excellent job promoting last night. Most people on this board recognize and appreciate the hard work that you and your staff have put into basketball (and of course football). It's easier to promote when you have a good product, and I'm thankful that JJ and Tina Slinker have given you guys great material to work with. Please don't let one or two bitter complainers detract from the respect you've earned from much of this board. I'm very impressed with the fantastic attendance last night, and look forward to 5K tomorrow. Go Mean Green!
  13. I'll be there with my husband, a recent grad friend of ours, and his mother. I think this will be her first NT basketball game ever. I'm going to try promoting the game at work today, and see if I can bring some more.

  15. I appreciate your research into the issue. Perhaps, as UNTBill mentioned, it just seemed like more because of the inopportune times (not saying that any unsportsmanlike is warranted). Although our unsportsmanlike penalties are really not all that much higher than any other teams, apparently, I think those calls, when combined with the delay of game penalties and offsides calls, simply exacerbates the problem. However, you are right to call me out on naming players specifically. I respectfully apologize to any players and their families who I may have erroneously singled out.
  16. A few years ago, someone hung a 6-foot poster of a mostly-naked beefcake right behind the goal. What ever happened to that poster? I can't think of anything more distracting for either gender...
  17. I think RV shows discretion at not posting his exact expectations on the board. Expectations for your employees should be discussed only between the manager and the employee - not on a public forum. I think RV does have some realistic, but high expectations for NT, and I think that given time, RV will make the moves necessary to achieve his goals. Alright EE, I'm up for your challenge. My expectations of the program are as follows: 1. Maintain a winning attitude. This does not mean that we must win every game. But I don't want to hear "We're lucky to be on the same field as X." I want to see the players enter each game with their shoulders set and eyes focused, prepared to battle for the W. And I want to see them leave the field with their heads held high, because they know, win or lose, that they gave it everything they had and represented their university well. 2. Be competitive. This goes along with the winning attitude, but I'd like to see us win at least 2 OOC games this year, and get beat by no more than 20 or so points (each game) in the "body bag games." I realize that that's ambitious, and if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen, but I do think it should be an obvious goal. 3. Reduce Penalties. I haven't crunched the numbers on this one, but I'm pretty sure NT averages 2 Unsportsmanlike calls per game. If someone would like to review the stats and prove me wrong, I encourage them to do so. However, regardless of the type of penalty, we make way too many stupid penalties. I believe this is a result of the coaches not stressing thinking before acting. I think with the graduation of T.J. Covington and Ja'mel Branch, we'll see fewer penalties - as long as they don't have any clones waiting in the wings - but I'd like to see more on-field discipline reacting to these bonehead penalties. The above things are my major expectations for this season. I believe if DD improves each of these things, we'll do much better this season. I could even forego a SB title for significant improvement, because I think if we see these things, more titles are looming in our future.
  18. Well, I can't get too mad at DD for wanting to get an early start on practices. With the way the team played last season, and considering how long it took the team to "gel," if we could start in December I'd be happy. However, I think providing rosters for fans at practices is a great idea. Although you're not going to get much more than the hardcore fan to attend Spring Practice, you can really butter up the hardcore fans and give them something worth promoting to the masses. I definitely think a meet and greet from the football team would be a great idea. It's much more meaningful for even the casual fan if you have the opportunity to put a face with a jersey and talk to the person in real life. I thoroughly enjoyed the Mean Green BBQ last year, and it really motivated me to learn more about the players I met. Also, I think it's great for the players to meet their fans and learn who (and what) they're playing for. So many of the fans truly love North Texas, and their enthusiasm I think can be an inspiration for some players. I'd love to see more events that get women involved in football. As one of the few girls who I think actually reads the board, it would be nice to get more women involved. Think of this from the guy's perspective: if your wife/girlfriend becomes as fanatic about football as you are, you can actually attend more events! DD's Football 101 is a great start, but I think maybe promoting other events to get women involved would be a great thing. Plus, it'd be nice to not get so overwhelmed with testosterone every now and then. Once female involvement reaches a certain level, I think it'd be a great thing to have a board that concentrates more on women's involvement and membership. Clinics followed by "Men versus Women" games and mixers would be a great way to promote more involvement. Just some thoughts...
  19. The NT Bookstore Annex, over down by Hooya's, has some trailer hitches. They're more of an older style, but they have them nonetheless. You might also want to try the Bookstore in the Union. I know they've gotten some new stuff in lately, so that might be one of their new items.
  20. Good Post. (ewww.... warm spit.)
  21. What about Roger Staubach? If memory serves me correctly, he graduated from the Naval Academy then fufilled his obligations before returning to play for the Cowboys.
  22. I'm a big fan of RV, although GreenBat does bring up a few posts. As a fan who has only seen Athletics under RV's guidance, allow me to bring my perspective: I agree that it's a bit disappointing that RV hasn't delivered on the donations yet. However, as some others have posted, that blame cannot rest squarely on RV's shoulders. It's our responsibility as alumni (especially as active alumni) to support the university. I don't know if people from North Texas just always get crappy jobs that pay poorly, or if too many people place it too low on their priority list, but it just seems that North Texas can't rake in the big cash. We also don't know what kind of fundraising restrictions (if any) are placed on athletics. I think to gauge fairly RV's efforts in fundraising, we'd need an insider's perspective. In terms of coaches: I'll give you that the softball coach has not been stellar. But the girls have good fundamentals, and I think you'll see the coach start to turn the program around. Once we build up a fanbase and some excitement for the teams, I think that will go a long way toward motivating the team. It's depressing to play when no one is watching or cares, but when you have fan support, it's easier to get up for every game (I can say this because I played competitive softball for 10 years). Of course, before RV we didn't even have a softball team, so you have to give him a little credit for at least getting us one. Now, as far as other coaches go: It's a pretty well-documented fact that the BOR kept RV from firing DD. If that's the case, what makes you think the BOR doesn't prevent RV from firing other coaches? Tina Slinker's record is suspect, but she's survived at least 2 or 3 other ADs, so it's possible there's something else at work here that we don't know about. I'm not suggesting conspiracy theories, just putting that out there. In terms of promoting the university, I can't think of a single person (except maybe Dr. Pohl) who goes more out of his way to promote North Texas. RV is at every single event he can possibly attend. I'll bet his wife is shocked when he comes home for dinner, because I see him out and about on campus all the time. He is willing to come to any and every event he's invited to. For the last 4 years, he's spent "Sunday Funday" helping students move into the residence halls. I've worked with him on some of those occasions, and he's absolutely fantastic with the students. He speaks and Freshman Orientation now, and you can see the effect it's had on our incoming classes. More and more students show up for football games. Unfortunately, our football team was unable to capitalize on the increased attendance this year (not RV's fault), so we probably lost a few fans for other sporting events because of the letdown. However, overall student attendance has increased, and that's something no one else has been able to do in a long time. You can also credit RV with tailgating. When I went to games in 2001, hardly anyone was there - in the parkinglot or at the games. But RV started promoting tailgating more, and trying to get people involved. He walks around during the events, introducing himself to people and continuing to promote the university. I think RV's strategy (although I'm speculating here) is to win support and subsequent $$$ from all alumni - not just this mythical big donor. Arguably, it's better for the university in the long term to have many small donors who regularly support the university than to have one big donor who gives a one-time donation. Maybe we don't get the facilities as soon as we'd like, but I think North Texas is taking many steps in the right direction. Is RV perfect? No. But as alumni, we've placed huge expectations on him, without giving him the resources with which to get things done. It's like demanding the moon but not giving him a lasso. One day I'd like to get an AD who attended North Texas and has the same passion that many of us share for our alma mater. But it the meantime, I can't think of anyone else who bleeds more green. Sorry for the long Plumm-like post, but I just wanted to provide a different perspective. Fire away.
  23. In all fairness to the women, it's difficult to get good attendance for a game that starts at 5pm. In addition, there was some mixup on the time, and the game didn't even start until closer to 5:30pm. Regardless, that's still way too early for anyone who drives to the game from Dallas. By the second half of the women's game, the crowd was halfway decent. Although the women had a terrible game, when they stepped it up towards the end, the crowd started to get into it.
  24. If I'm reading the original post correctly, the DJ wasn't necessarily a woman, although I do take offense at your insinuation that women don't know football. It was a female caller who didn't know the answer. The DJ had the answer right in front of him/her. However, this just further proves that we're not getting our name out there in the metroplex. I think the best thing for althletics in general would be a few feature spots on the news right around August. That and some billboard advertising. It's really annoying to see all those stupid purple billboards all over Ft. Worth, but not a single thing in Green. At the very least, we should put up a billboard on I-35 over near the campus.
  25. You should have seen the ULaLa game. Refs made a terrible call, and Johnny yells during a lull, "That's BULL SH!T (insert Ref's name here)!" Really got the crowd into the game, and he was right - the call was.... well, you know.
