  1. Have you ever tried marching band? It's very difficult to play a complicated piece of music while moving to your exact spot on the field, but yet adjusting in case someone on either side of you misses their mark and you have to compensate to keep the shape. And the reason to wear black, as I'm sure Green Grenade, Old Timer, and any other band person could tell you, is that at least for the shoes/socks, black doesn't show up as well on the field. Therefore, if your lines are a bit off, you wear black so that it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. The Green Brigade and our music school in general prides itself on the quality of music. Maybe some of the songs aren't what everyone expects to hear at a football game, and that's where you call the band director out. Talk to him about it, but don't complain to the Brigade - they're just playing what they're told to play. As my band director used to say, "We could have a great drill and play 'Come Love Me Jesus' in whole notes, but that wouldn't be very interesting." Personally, I'd rather sacrifice a complicated drill for better musicianship any day.
  2. $15 is still a steal for a DI-A football game. I think many people will show up out of morbid curiosity.
  3. I was a big fan of Matt Phillips last season, and thought that he deserved a start last year. I was also happy that he got the start against Texas. However..... I think Woody should start against SMU. I wasn't impressed with his first few plays at Texas, but the more he played, the smarter he got. He started making better decisions, and I think his scrambling ability really helped us get that score. I think something shook MP's confidence. He didn't look as confident as he did last year, and I wonder if this stupid QB controversy is one of the main reasons for the problem. If you think about it, last year he busted his butt every time he went in the game and DD wouldn't start him. Now suddenly he finally gets his chance to start, but he knows that any screw ups and he's on the bench again for the entire season. That's a lot of pressure to put on someone. That's just speculation on my part, and I wouldn't even pretend to know football as much as a coach, but it just seems that DD is a bit.... unequal and inconsistent in the way he treats the QBs.
  4. Did anyone else notice that we did not get a single commerical spot for the game, while Baylor had 2 or 3? Watching the Baylor game today, I've noticed that same add that was run yesterday in our game advertising for Baylor. Did Fox put Baylor's add in instead of ours? From my understanding, typically when you play on TV, you get at least one commercial spot as part of the deal. Someone in the athletics office should be chewing some serious butt here.
  5. That sound byte you heard was from an upcoming episode of "Friday Night Lights" on NBC (?). He wasn't saying it because he was necessarily thinking it, the writers apparently thought it would be funny. I'm definitely not a tU fan, nor am I much of a Mack Brown fan. However, I thought that he gave us credit today, and treated us with respect. It was supposed to be a blowout game, and no one really expected otherwise. Would I like to see our team do better? Hell Yes. Am I completely happy with all the coaches did to prepare our team for the game and coach them during the game? Hell No. But our players went out there and gave it all on the field for an entire 60 minutes. And I couldn't be more proud of them. They played like they didn't come there to lose, and for that, I can't get too down on the entire situation.
  6. Good 1. I saw some adjustments on both the offense and defense after the half. Looked like a different blocking scheme out there on the drive Woody had. 2. Woody Wilson. I was a Phillips fan, and I still think he can get it together, but I saw a lot of improvement from Woody as the game progressed. He made better decisions on when to throw and when to run, and his scrambling ability is pretty nice. 3. Hearing lots of positives about North Texas. Mac Brown and the announcers all had pretty positive things to say. I liked when the announcers mentioned the state-of-the-art facilities at North Texas and how our recruiting was only going to continue getting better. 4. We scored.
  7. You might want to try a local Lids or Hat World. They typically have a good selection. You can also order merchandise from Mean Green Athletics and have it shipped.
  8. Depends.... it's usually somewhere around 20% of the program, so this semester it will be 5, counting me.
  9. She actually stopped by my sister's room as we were moving her in on Sunday Funday. Dr. Bataille is really very nice, and I was impressed that she was spending her day meeting the new students. I like the fact that she said we should be the best at everything we do. To me, that's an endorsement of athletics and a commitment to improvement.
  10. I feel sorry for her and her family. I seriously doubt Matt will stick around, and she'll either have to deal with being a young, unwed mother, or deal with the pain of giving up her child. I just think it's tacky for the media to cover this...
  11. You probably just had some TA teaching the course. Technical writing should always be written in second person. The graduate program at North Texas has a 99% job placement record. In addition, it provides students with the opportunity to work with real-life clients, such as major construction firms, non-profit organizations, and other business contacts.
  12. The graduate Technical Writing program is one of the best in the nation and well-known for its real-life situation-based approach. It's also one of the toughest graduate degrees at North Texas (I know because I'm finishing it in December ) We have some of the leading researchers in Biological Sciences, including a top researcher in plant biology. We've also got a microbiologist who is absolutely amazing (Dr. O'Donovan). edit: I forgot to mention our 7 Pulitzer Prize winners.
  13. Sure, white pants are fine if you don't mind looking at a bunch of butt sweat. I'd much prefer the black or green pants. Personally, I like the dark on bottom, light on top look because it looks less like a jumpsuit.
  14. FFR's signature is actually supporting the Mean Green. It's a frame-by-frame shot from the NT-tU game from 1988 where we were robbed of the win. The frames depict how clearly the tU player was out of bounds, although the official ruled it a touchdown. There was a really long thread on this a few weeks ago. LongJim may support the horns, but I think he equally supports North Texas. LongJim, correct me if I'm wrong, graduated from University of Texas but follows the Mean Green as a Dentonite. Either way, he's a supporter, and we need all the support we can get.
  15. If they're not paid on commission, then I find it interesting that the Parking Office told my dad that they were. Perhaps they were trying to drum up sympathy? I understand following orders, and my rant was directed more at the Parking Office and administration than at the meter maids. However, the meter maids don't need to be jerks about it either. There are plenty of times I've seen them lurking around cars and waiting for the meters to expire, just so they can write the ticket.
  16. Well said, Harry! Good luck to everyone this Saturday in Austin. Remember to play hard and play smart, and remember that we're out there rooting for you! Go MEAN GREEN!
  17. I would be too. I seem to remember Meager having a concussion or two last year... I know he wants to play, but sometimes the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. I'm glad to hear DD isn't playing him at all at Texas. Even if the nausea were gone, I'm pretty sure our offensive line can't hold the Texas D all game. One big hit and that could be it for Meager... he's going to need to be careful back there.
  18. Finally! If nothing else, he deserves a start after what he did last year. I still don't like quarterback by committee, so let's hope either Phillips or WW really shine down in Austin. Go get 'em boys!!!
  19. True, they were mostly harmless. But it scared the crap out of the little freshman girls and their daddies when they were touring the campus during orientation.
  20. I was living at Clark when they tore down the house. It took them forever to tear down because of the asbestos and general nastiness in the house. For about two weeks after they removed the house, there were about 250 beer cans laying around. Can't say I missed a bunch of drunk guys hollering at all the girls as we passed....
  21. Me - 23 (Bachelor's and in December Master's) Husband - 25 (Bachelor's)
  22. I find it interesting that any accounting firm would be reluctant to hire North Texas grads when we have one of the top accounting departments in the country. Maybe they couldn't afford the salary...
  23. Can anyone substantiate the fight rumor? If it's just a rumor, we need to quash it quickly. If not...
  24. No children, but we have a cat named Sox (as in Chicago White), who loves North Texas. She carries around beads from the New Orleans Bowl all the time, and her absolute all-time favorite toy is a football. She plays a great game of fetch with it.
