  1. I disagree. Because they are not SMU, I think the longer penalty will have a more lasting effect.
  2. I seem to recall them reporting in the beginning that one of the accusers/victims was one of Sandusky's grandchildren. And that's part of the reason everyone made such a stink about him getting house arrest - that he would be able to sit with his family, some of whom were also victims. Did the grandson not testify or choose to pursue the charges? Either way, Sandusky deserves life in jail without parole.
  3. I don't remember ever hearing much about DeMarcus Ware in college either. But I do remember that Littlejohn guy from MTSU. I guess some guys are just REALLY late bloomers...
  4. I really hope that's a joke. Seriously, most companies should and will fire you for it. It shows a lack of integrity. I really hope that's not the issue with Forrest and that it's some misunderstanding about his degree. But it's on him to correct it.
  5. That we spend millions of dollars funding a football stadium, but every year more art and music programs are cut and teachers are laid off?
  6. The steel drum band has set up and performed on football game days before as well. When I was a student, I used to love walking back behind the library and listening to them practice.
  7. Since they had to have a special phone discussion about it, I think there's an unopened invitation on Rawlins' desk. He just had to get BOR approval to open it.
  8. I'm not insinuating that Pudge's HR numbers mean he didn't juice. He entered the majors so young that I think that had more to do with his health than drug use. I think the steroids started in 2004 or so after he started getting injured. But he had 10 consecutive Gold Gloves before that. Cooperstown is not just about batting numbers. I think Pudge belongs in the HOF because of his defense.
  9. I'd agree 2nd behind Johnny Bench. If he juiced, I don't think it was heavily. He hit home runs, but he was more effective as a doubles guy (572 2B to 311 HR). That's just good ball placement. He was a phenomenal defensive catcher (even though Nolan Ryan didn't like him). That guy could pick more runners off first base than anyone else I've ever seen. He's 6th all time in throwing out runners on base (45.52%) He had 10 consecutive AL gold gloves, and a total of 13 in his career. Additionally, he was classy (at least when he left the Rangers). I remember him taking out a full page add in the Ft Worth Star Telegram thanking the fans for their support and what they meant to his family.
  10. I don't think the Constitution had as much to do with the global culture as our leaders' penchant for getting involved with foreign wars. Up until the 20th century, we were an isolationist nation still operating under the same Constitution. And Ginsberg saying she thinks the document is outdated for starting a new frame of government doesn't mean she detests the Constitution. I think the graphics for the game "Lemmings" is outdated, but it doesn't mean I don't still love that blasted game.
  11. My question is more along the lines of if Aston expressed interest in UNT first, did she get permission from her previous employer first? If indeed UT pursued Aston without permission (which it looks like that was the case), I'm just baffled as to why there isn't any foot stomping and lawyers lining up to take care of the issue. Maybe RV is playing it cool, and I'm totally fine with that if that's the case, but when this whole thing ends, there better be a hefty check on UT stationary heading to the UNT Athletics office.
  12. Given our more global culture and diversity as a nation, I don't have a problem with her wanting to look at foreign courts, as long as the final decision is soundly based on our own laws. The Constitution comment also makes some sense. While I personally would like to think that any new republic that forms would include our Bill of Rights as intrinsic freedoms, we don't live in isolated nations anymore. It might make some sense, if a country were starting over, to try and think outside the box to incorporate the appropriate level of freedoms for a globalized country. But her expressed opinions don't negate her sound mind; they just differ from your (and some of the other justice's) opinions. Which is why we have 9 judges on the Court instead of one, and why I appreciate the dissenting opinions. It is only by examining our own beliefs through exploring all sides of an argument that we can be confident in our decisions.
  13. To clarify, neither the Administration nor the states were disputing the Court's standing to hear the case. The Court itself appointed another lawyer to argue the case so that both sides were presented. While some of the questions from yesterday indicated that the Court was definitely thinking about the arguments today, I think yesterday was more of a wash. Just getting through all the technical stuff so that they could get to the real arguments today and tomorrow. While Justice Ginsberg may be frail of body, she is still very sound of mind.
  14. I honestly think that this law should be struck down piecemeal - not in its entirety. There are several items in there that I approve of. I was surprised by how much the FSA limitation would affect me. It's very difficult to predict within the course of a year exactly how much you'll need to spend on the doctor. Some years it's obvious you may need to spend more (like saving up for lasik, or planning for a child), but most years it's a crap shoot at best. One of the things I found most helpful at the end of the year was using the remaining portion of my FSA to ensure I had a fully stocked, up-to-date medicine cabinet. This has come in handy many times - ensuring I have basic first aid items and frequently used medications. When the new restrictions went into effect, preventing us from using our remaining funds for OTC items, I've found myself much less willing to purchase these items. In my opinion, I think it's stupid to restrict OTC items if they're used. It's my money that I've already allocated to healthcare, and I should be able to distribute the money within that allocation in whatever way I find best benefits my health.
  15. Hi everyone, I know there are some folks on this board who live in or near Granbury. An old friend of mine from school's grandfather has been missing fsince March 10 without a trace. Here's a story about it: http://www.myfoxdfw.com/dpp/news/elderly-man-missing-near-granbury-032312 If you see any sign of him, please report it so that the family can have some peace. Thanks.
  16. They said the scorer's table made a mistake. They corrected it at halftime.
  17. Quick, somebody find that picture of the tower! Great job guys.
  18. I voted for Obama because the longer i watched McCain on the campaign trail, the more concerned I became for his ability to handle rhe job. His poor judgement was most evident when he selected Palin as his running mate. That being said, I do not really think he's done enough to warrant another term. I haven't seen him speaking out against the rampant partisanship that renders our government ineffective. He continues to sign legislation heavy with earmarks. I work in the healthcare industry and it's my job to know how the doctors are doing. And they're struggling. You're right that a small portion of the healthcare bill is good. But most of it is not. Reimbursements continue to decline while doctors forced to take on more low income patients are losing more and more money. Healthcare is a tough proposition because you have to balance moral obligations with making a living. But aome of these new requirements to assess "quality" medicine are juat sinking doctors more and more in debt. The reimbursements for moving to electronic records do not cover the full cost of implementation and attesting for meaningful use requires six months of data that has been a moving target and is difficult to interpret. I could go on for a qhile about it, but in summary the push for the legislation lead to poorly constructed, ambiguous, and ill-informed regulations that have only made the overall situation worse.
  19. Except when they catch the Crimson Tide by surprise ...
  20. Confirmed. I heard it too. Unbelievable.
  21. Patterson is definitely going to have challenges with this one. My armchair coach opinion: 1. For third strike guys, it's the end of the line. You have to stay tough on this one, otherwise any future threats are ineffective. 2. Given the reported number of guys who supposedly failed the drug test, bring in drug counseling for the entire team. Even the clean guys. 3. Announce to the team that there will be random drug tests for the remainder of the year, and the new policy is one strike and you're out. 4. Follow through with the threat. It may seriously affect TCU's football performance this year, but you know, I think the entire NCAA would respect them more for taking the stand. If I were a TCU alum and the university did the above, I'd increase my donations and be proud to be associated with a school that takes such a strong stand on drug abuse.
  22. To be fair, I doubt we would have turned down an invite to the Big East either, even though our students would have the same struggles.
  23. So how do you know they didn't do that? You're just assuming that because the kids failed, someone at the AD didn't do their job. That's an unfair accusation unless you have inside knowledge. When I was in school we had PAs (Peer Advisors) who lived in the dorms with us and could talk to us about academics. They had access to all the tutors, could set up study halls, connect us with others in the same courses, etc. But there were still students who failed. Does that mean the PAs failed to do their job? No. It means (A) Some kids aren't ready for a college load. ( Some kids are not motivated to study/don't take it seriously enough. © Some kids do not take academic advice. Especially if things were easy for them before, it's very easy in college, with only 2 to 4 tests in a semester, to slip once and be in a lot of trouble. (D) A combination of any of the above. All the grade reports, heart-to-hearts, mandatory study halls, and wishful thinking will not get someone a passing grade if the appropriate amount of effort isn't applied. And that's on them. They're young, it's a learning experience, and while I'm disappointed, I think the AD has sufficiently discussed this issue and I (and the rest of you should be too) am ready to move on and look forward to watching them play next season.
  24. Thank goodness for a baseball thread. A few things of note on Darvish: 1) The Rangers have been eyeing him since high school, so they're very familiar with his stuff. 2) When Nolan became involved again with the Rangers, the first thing he did was improve the physical toughness of the pitchers. Over the past few years, the stamina of the pitching staff has really improved (certainly not counting out Mike Maddux's contribution here as well). But Nolan is one of those old school pitchers who believes that all the starters should throw into the 9th. That man can still throw and 80+ mph fastball, so I fully believe he knows how to condition a body. I think Yu will really excel with that routine. 3) Darvish is insanely committed to his workouts (see CJ without the crazy). He stopped in the middle of his Rangers tour to do his workout. If the Rangers give him a specific workout, I am 100% confident he will follow it to the letter. I had a really nice write-up of why Fielder would want to be a Ranger, including references to the 1927 Yankees' Murderer's Row, but I just saw that Fielder signed with the Tigers. Weird, but oh well.
  25. We noticed that too. But it's still good publicity. My only complaint is, that while they never said anything untrue, the way it was worded about Tony made it sound like he had grade issues ("academic troubles"). Technically, his issues were academic, but as I understand it, it was more like credit transfer issues than grade issues. He's clearly a bright guy and has worked hard for the GPA he has, and I think that deserves a lot of credit.
