  1. I'm a Technical Writer for a Fortune 10 company's healthcare business unit. My undergrad is in Biology and I just finished my Masters in Technical Writing - both from North Texas.
  2. For those of you interested... A site with a list of historic helmets: The Helmet Project
  3. Speaking from experience, there's a website out there that lists all of North Texas's helmets, from inception to present. Find the Flying Worm helmet, note the years used, then search eBay for "North Texas Mini Helmets." When looking through the surprisingly large list of helmets, make sure to choose one that exactly fits the years of the Flying Worm. Even then, it's not a guaranteed that you'll get the right one.
  4. Considering that the nickname has lasted some 20 or so years, I wouldn't say it's a passing fad. Why is Nebraska called the "Big Red?" Why is Alabama the "Crimson Tide?" Many schools have secondary nicknames (although in 'Bama's case, they don't have much of a choice--I mean, an elephant, really?) I consider it a matter of pride that we earned the nickname "Mean Green." It was no marketing ploy nor slick maneuver to garner more attention. Our school attracted attention through its playing. That's something to be proud of. Is the Doomsday Defense or the Steel Curtain a stupid marketing trick? We are the University of North Texas Mean Green Eagles. No one else in college football has the nickname "Mean Green." It's a distinguishing characteristic of the university that is now a part of us, whether you like it or not.
  5. Um, you mean Trojans? MUTS = MTSU Trojans = Troy
  6. A North Texas alumnus and wide receiver for the football team, who's worked with Dodge before? I think it's a great idea. His record may not be that great at Haltom, but he hadn't even been there a year yet. I'm withholding judgement until I see how this year works out.
  7. Final: UNC 101 - FAU 44
  8. Rusty Greer is a class act, and while that would be huge, his comment about coaching at a metroplex college starting a program could be someone besides us. Plus, that could also be wishful thinking. Kinda like when Eric Pegram mentioned he'd like to be NT's new running backs coach. Sometimes things just don't work out the way you'd like them to. Besides, this is all speculation until RV announces that we're actually going to have said baseball team.
  9. That was exactly my point, that Christianity has been "modernized" for the most part. Although being both female and a Christian, I am fully aware of what the Bible has to say about the role of women. I'm actually a more moderate Baptist (grew up Southern Baptist), so I've had many encounters with the Fundamentals. If you follow a technical definition of "Christian" - those who believe that Jesus was God's son who died on the cross for our sins, then the Branch Davidians in Waco were not in fact, Christians. Although their origins are in the Seventh Day Adventist church, by the time the Branch Davidians were killed in Waco, they believed that David Koresh was the "Lamb" (a reference from the book of Revelations, which Koresh used to support his teachings). The Lamb is used in Revelations to refer to Jesus Christ and his breaking of the seven seals. For a good read on it, the Wikipedia entry is here.
  10. You can't lump Waco in with Christianity - it was a cult group. You make a valid point about how our media immediately identify people by their religious beliefs. I think honestly the problem is that the two religions are basically incompatible. Muslim traditions include subservient women, harsh laws, and absolute, unfailing devotion. Christianity, on the other hand, promotes freedoms, forgiveness, and assimilating the religion into our daily lives. Granted, these views of Christianity are dominated by the political views of the Western world, but that is in fact, how Christianity primarily focuses today. We think Muslims are wrong because they treat their women differently. True, every religion wants to spread throughout the world, but I think where we in America have trouble is that many Muslims would rather kill all the "infidels" rather than convert them. It's a sad situation, and one which I think will never resolve itself.
  11. I don't think we necessarily need to change the design, but we do need to change the color. It's a bit odd to see the team in one shade of green and everyone in the stands, the merchandise, the field colors, etc. all in a different shade of green. Since the university has apparently committed to the new colors and replaced a bunch of signs and all, the athletics department should get on board and use the new color. After that, no more changes - ever.
  12. Are you reading this at work? I sometimes can't access sites because of my company's internet policy.
  13. We redshirted him this past year, so no, he's never taken a snap in a game. However, he was on the sidelines at every game, and supposedly was something to watch in practice. From what I've heard, he's a sharp kid with an intuition about football. He earned one of the walk-on spots on the team last year with his work ethic and dedication - I wouldn't count him out of the mix.
  14. Also, if you'd like to sit in something you can bring with you, the UNT bookstore has North Texas stadium seats.
  15. I have a coworker from Celina here who says that there are four of their linemen (both offensive and defensive) who are seriously considering NT.
  16. I'm following you, just don't have the computer skills...
  17. I don't think Texas Tech as an OC. Not completely sure on this, but I think I remember hearing that somewhere...
  18. Fox 4 had two stories about it last night in their 10:00 news cast. The first one was just a basic, "Todd Dodge is heading to North Texas" thing, about 2 minutes long. The second one was a fairly long piece interviewing a bunch of Southlake Carroll fans disappointed that Dodge was leaving. One kid looked about ready to cry. The best part was a sound bite from the press conference, and Todd Dodge talking about winning at North Texas. My husband also saw the announcement on the ESPN sports ticker.
  19. Don't forget, we've got Tune sitting there just waiting for his chance. Supposedly he's a really quick study.
  20. 2x alumna: 2004 - B.A. in Biology 2006 (next weekend) - M.A. Technical Writing
  21. I like the idea of naming the fields after Andrew - very appropriate. However, why couldn't they have suggested that BEFORE the BOR voted to name it after Dickey?
  22. As I've said before, I don't think Bleil or Archie have been here long enough for a coach to make a decision about them. If I were the coach, I would probationally keep Brewster, Bleil, Russell, and Archie unless I absolutely disliked them the moment I met them. To ease the transition, in my mind you should keep at least one familiar face, if nothing else to help communicate between players and the coach. From what I've heard, Brewster, Bleil, Russell, and Archie have excellent rapport with the team and have earned respect. If I as a coach can get them on board with me, things would be a lot easier.
  23. I know that kid, and can tell you that I've never met someone so in love with the university. He's in my opinion, one of the best Scrappy's when he's out there, and when he's not, he's doing a great job promoting the university. I believe he graduates in May...
  24. Great idea stebo... To any recruits: You can't ask for a more dedicated university when it comes to giving you an education. North Texas staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and committed to making sure that while you're learning the game of football, you're also learning life lessons and getting an education that will serve you well whether you end up a pro athlete or not. Here's a few highlights on university academics: * Top accounting program * Top music program * Top environmental science program * Accredited and well-regarded business school * Top emergency management program * High-level scientific research community Academics will serve you well in the long run, whether you see it now or not. Choose an institution that cares about you not only as a football player, but as a student and as an individual. North Texas prides itself on diversity - you have thousands of students ready to accept you for who you are and to help you find a place in this world. Go Mean Green!
  25. Why saddle a new coach with players that may or may not fit his system or his standards? True, we're not getting ahead out there with recruiting, but there are many other schools in the same boat. Next year might be a bit rough, but I have a hunch that whomever RV brings in will make this worth our while.
