How can you guys use 'effort' as a barometer to evalutate Canales' resume? Our players gave effort under Dodge. You could point to maybe a few quarters where effort was brought into question but for the most part I feel we were giving effort. That effort just didn't result in wins. For me, I need to see wins. The last two years have been filled with effort that results in a close loss. I need to see that change. Maybe it's Xs and Os, maybe it's an inspiring and passion filled halftime speech, or maybe it's decision making in critical moments. Whatever it is it should end with a W. We may not have as much talent as Troy or MUTS or Kstate. But aren't we looking for a coach who can get us some wins when we're expected to lose? Aren't we looking for a recruiter who can walk into someone's home and point to some signiture wins he's had? I'd love for Canales to lead this team into our new stadium. But I need to see more than just effort.

Great questions. I think Canales needs to win 3 of the last 4 and play well in the other. I don't want to see a 4th quarter lead lost. I'm not sure with Riley at QB if Canales can really run the offense he wants to. Which is why this is a good test for him and his abilities as a coach. Can he win when everything's not perfect? He's not a lead candidate in my mind simply because those that don't follow the program will never understand promoting from within a terrible program. It just won't look good to do that unless you can point to 4 out of 5 wins as the reason.

Can we define 'name coach?' I think Mike Leach would be in that group but not Leavitt. Your average college football fan has no idea who Jim Leavitt is.

If Bower is hired and at the announcement RV says, 'I did contact Coach Fran. Mike Leach, Jim Leavitt, the Bowden Brothers, and all those high profile names mentioned on gmg.com and none of them were interested' would everyone still be frustrated with Bower? Of course if you start throwing out a bunch of 'sexy' names Jeff Bower becomes very boring. But if, as I suspect, none of them are intersted, I'd love to have Jeff Bower.

I just don't agree that this decision needs to make a splash. The Dodge hire made a splash and we see how that worked out. If RV is making his choice based of impressing the fan base I think we're in trouble. Winning games will impress the fan base. Your average student or alum won't change their actions because we hired Terry Bowden, Mike Leach, or Coach Fran. Chances are they won't even know who they are either. But if we start winning, they'll notice that. Not that I'm against any of the big name guys, I just don't believe the hire should be about making headlines.

I've already got tired head from researching and going over the random candidates we come up with. We know RV said he'd like a decision made before the end of the season. When do you guys think we'll begin to hear things in the works? Will we be celebrating Fouts Field with the introduction to our new coach on 11/27?

You're right Rick. Everyone from 'the new generation' lacks respect and appreciation for what came before them. Lets not turn this into a generational battle between 'The Good 'Ol Days' and 'The New Generation.'

I'm just glad the crazy speculation game will hopefully last just over a month. I'm already getting tired head thinking about all these guys.

The hire won't affect my season ticket purchase. Bring on the negatives but play on the field will and does affect my attendance. I, however, have supported Dodge through his entire tenure and believe any new coach deserves 2 years of unconditional support.

In the middle of a Rangers playoff run, Cowboys season, the start of Mavs season, I'm shocked the UNT vacancy is getting an entire segment.

Norm's saying a 'name coach' won't happen. Asking, 'Why would a coach kill his career like that?' He's suggests 'you need a young guy who wants to MAKE his career at North Texas.'

Why are so many thinking Leavitt comes here? Is there any reason to think that other than the Canales connection? I've seen people saying it's a 75% chance and things like that. Maybe you guys know something I don't but I figure I could pick a guy that I like and make up some random percentage he'll be our next coach without any knowledge other than what I read here.

I agree completely. But I'd rather this hire be 'boring' like Bower yet produce wins than be 'flashy' like Dodge and well, you know the rest.

Can someone explain to me what's so bad about Bower? I don't know much about him. If Fran, Leach, Levitt, and Bowden aren't interested would he then be a decent hire? Wouldn't you rather have Bower with HC experience than a young guy getting his first HC job? Again, I don't know much about Bower.
