The last info. that was discussed the other evening is that the top (first place) team in the two divisions go, followed by the next six according to their conference records. That is not three from each division, but the next six no matter which division. This makes a total of eight. I believe in the future the plans are to take all the teams. This might happen next year.

Planning possible vacation to Texas

The Fort Worth Zoo is FIRST RATE. It is still listed as a top 10 Zoo in the Country. Mi Casita is good, but I think it is on Fort Worth Drive just past I35 E if I am thinking of the same place. Look at Voertman's for the North Texas Stuff. They are working with the Athletic Office on the clothing. However, I still would stop by the Union just to compare. Try the Radison Hotel # is 940-565-8499. That is the one on the golf course. Holiday Inn 1500 Dallas Drive 940-387-3511. La Qunita 700 Ft. Worth Drive 940-387-5840. or nationwide 800-531-5900. Super 8 Motel 620 I35 East 940-380-8888 this is a new motel maybe a year old. Same side of interstate as The University. Wildwood Inn 2602 Lillian Miller Pkwy 940- 243-4919. This is a new Bed and Breakfast. Ramada Inn820 S I35E 940-387-0591. Royal Hotel Suites 1210 N I35 940-383-2007. Hope this helps. There are some other hotels in the book. Email me if you want some of the others. -
Talked to Coach Leonard today. SMU only sent over 50 tickets for the players comp. Didn't send any for our ticket office to sell. Must purchase at or through SMU ticket office. I don't know if this is SOP or what.

Why RV has failed as Athletic Director

1. The JumboTron/Scoreboard is scheduled to be in place next year. 2. As far as the athletic fee vote at least this University gave the students a vote. At Texas and at A&M the Regents approved the fee increases and informed the student body. Don't forget the Regents make the money decisions not the students. 3. Your Fundraising argument is answered by your own comments. WE NOW HAVE A PRODUCT TO SELL. 4. One thing you forgot to mention was the Soccer Field by the Peterbuilt plant. The Soccer Chicks now have their own field instead of playing on the Intramural Fields. When the Liberty School is purchased that field will be moved to that property. 5. As far as the Football Media Guide for next year. That publication is 7 - 8 months away. We have the New Orleans Bowl to play. 6. Finally, what have YOU done TACO for the Athletic Department or the University? Have YOU donated any money or are you just wanting to complain at 2:30 AM? -

Lady Eagles Add Two Players In Early Signing Period DENTON- The North Texas women's basketball team has announced the signing of two players in the early signing period. The Lady Eagles added Mia Ajekwu, a 6-3 forward from The Woodlands High School and post player Kelsie Edwards, a 6-0 post from Summitt High School in Mansfield. "We are very excited to have Kelsie on board. She is a tremendous young lady who will contribute to our program immediately. Kelsie is a solid post player who has the ability to score inside and out. She also has the ability to score on the block and is very deceiving despite her size. Kelsie has been a part of one of the most successful high schools in the country and will bring an attitude of positive winning every time she steps on the court," said head coach Tina Slinker. Edwards was a member of Mansfield High School's state title team that defeated San Antonio Taft, the school that produced current Lady Eagle guard Natalie Mireles. Last season Edwards led the team in rebounding by averaging 6.9 rebounds per game. She also shot 54 percent from the field and 74 percent from the free throw line. Ajekwu was a 15-5A all-district performer last season as she averaged nine points and seven rebounds per game leading her team to the playoffs. As a freshman she averaged 16 points and 12 points per game. "Mia is a physical, dominating post player who brings size to our inside game. She continues to get better on a daily basis and has the ability to become one of the best post players in the State. Mia runs the floor extremely well and will fit into our up tempo style of play. Mia's potential is unlimited and certainly will be counted on right away in the post area. Mia comes from one of the best coaches in the high school ranks and has great work ethic and discipline. She was exactly what we were looking for to sign for the future of our program," said Slinker. North Texas begins their 2002-03 season on Friday, November 22, at home in the Super Pit against UTSA. Recruit Profiles Mia Ajekwu, 6-3, Forward, The Woodlands, Texas (The Woodlands High School) As a junior she was an all-district player averaging nine points and seven rebounds per game. Her freshman season she averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds per game. "She is a great athlete that is very aggressive for a girl her size. She is a very unselfish player that is tremendous on the defensive side of the ball. She will be a very good fit with Coach Slinker and her style of coaching". said Kren Heintz, head coach at The Woodlands. Kelsie Edwards, 6-0, Forward, Mansfield, Texas (Summitt High School) Edwards has played on two consecutive state championship teams at Mansfield High School, which has been renamed Summitt High School. As a member of the varsity team has a record of 71-4 over two seasons. Her junior season she averaged 13.9 points per game and 6.9 rebounds. She scored 530 points last season which is a Mansfield school district record since moving into Class 5A. "Last season she definitely did everything we thought she could do and more. She is a very versatile player and a very deceiving player that can cause problems," said Summitt head coach Samatha Morrow.

Mean Green Signs Mike Jones To National Letter Of Intent DENTON - The North Texas men's basketball team signed McClennan Community College transfer Mike Jones to a national letter of intent on the first day of the early signing period Wednesday. Jones, a 6-7 forward who weighs 208 lbs., played high school ball at Lancaster and was a member of the McClennan CC team during the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. He is sitting out this season to complete the academic requirements necessary to transfer to a Division I university. "We are very excited about signing Mike," said North Texas head coach Johnny Jones. "We think he will be a great addition to our program. With three graduating seniors from this year's team, there will be a void left and we feel that with Mike we have taken the necessary steps in the right direction to start filling those positions." During Jones' career at MCC, he averaged an impressive 19.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. While leading the Highlanders to a 37-24 record in two seasons and a second-place finish in the NTJCAC, he earned All-Region and All-America honors and was the conference Player of the Year Runner-up in 2001-02. "Mike is a complete player," said Wendall Hudson, Jones' coach at MCC. "He plays hard on both ends of the court and is an outstanding three-point shooter. Mike doesn't do anything he can't do, but still gets the job done. If you need a key basket, he'll make it, and if you need a big rebound, he'll get it. On top of his abilities as a basketball player, he is one of the best individuals you will ever be around. I feel like he made a good choice in North Texas and North Texas made a good choice in him because he is outstanding both on and off the court." While competing at Lancaster HS under head coach Joe Rushing, Jones earned First Team All-District Honors and averaged 15 points and nine rebounds per game. "Mike brings a lot of toughness with him," said Rushing. "He will go to the boards very hard and he's not afraid to take a big shot. Mike's a real competitor that is very passionate about basketball and will lay it on the line every game."

Davis Receives Votes For AP All-America Team A senior guard on the North Texas men's basketball team, Chris Davis (Dallas, Texas), has received votes for the 2002-03 Associated Press All-America Team. Davis (6-5, 225) was one of 22 players to receive votes from the 72-member national media panel, while Xavier's David West, Arizona's Luke Walton and Jason Gardner, Kansas' Kirk Henrich and Alabama's Erin Deadly were first-team selections. Along with Western Kentucky's Chris Marcus, Davis was the only other Sun Belt Conference player to earn recognition on the list. Davis helped North Texas to the nation's third-best improvement in winning percentage (.143 in 2000-01 to .517 in 2001-02) while leading the Sun Belt Conference in scoring all season and finishing ranked ninth in the country in points per game with 22.5. Davis, who was a first-team Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference selection, enters his senior season with 1,744 career points and 548 points away from overtaking Kenneth Lyons (1980-83) as the school's all-time scoring leader. Davis has been a consistent scorer his entire career, averaging 18.0 points per game as sophomore and finishing his freshman season as the second-leading freshman scorer in the nation with a 22.7 points per game average. However, ranked ninth in school history for career assists with 215 to his credit, Davis isn't just a scorer. In fact, last season he became the first player in North Texas history to lead the team in scoring (22.5 ppg), rebounding (6.4 rpg) and assists (74). Four players in North Texas men's basketball history have been named to the post-season AP All-America team. Bill Menefee was an NAIA All-American in 1942-43, the school's first player to receive the honor. Under Division I status, John Savage became the Mean Green's first player to receive the honor, and he was followed by Rubin Russell in 1966-67 and Kenneth Lyons in 1981-82 and 1982-83. Savage, Russell and Lyons were honorable mention selections.

Men's basketball 2002 PREVIEW Dario Aguilar Sports Editor October 31, 2002 Improved defense a key factor for 2002-2003 season Senior guard Chris Davis is ready for the basketball season to start now. He can't wait. After last year's 82-68 loss to Western Kentucky in the second round at the Sun Belt Conference tournament, Davis said he was not ready for the season to end. Second-year coach Johnny Jones had the nation's third best improvement in winning percentage last year. (.143 in 2000-01 to .571in 2001-02) Davis will not have to wait much longer as the preseason begins Nov. 8 and the season opener follows Nov. 22 at Springfield, Mo., against the Southwest Missouri State Bears. But this year, a focus has been put on defense. While the Mean Green ranked first in the Sun Belt in scoring offense averaging 78.4 points per game, while it gave up a conference-low 78.2 points per game. "The coaches have really been getting after us on playing defense," Davis said. "We need to get in our opponents' faces." NT will also have to play without its two "defensive tools" from last season. Guards Kenneth Mangrum and Terence White were lost to graduation. However, Mangrum has come back this season to work as a student assistant to help with defense. "We need to step up on defense with [with Terence and Kenneth] gone," Davis said. "They were both very athletic. We need to lock our men up when we are playing." During last year's recruiting season, head coach Johnny Jones signed players he believes will help on defense. Junior forward Michael DeGrate and freshman guard Scott Roniger are two of the just four fresh faces on the team. "The whole team goal is to better our defense and I think I am going to be apart of it," DeGrate said. DeGrate added that it has been easy to come into Jones' system of basketball and is eager to help the team in any way possible. "He's done an excellent job so far," Jones said. "I knew watching him in junior college that he was going to do well. He is a fine basketball player and he came from a fine program. He's getting better each day." The other two freshman recruits include forwards Ron Harris and Ty Thomas who have both met Jones' expectations from what he saw of their play in high school. "All of them have had some really good days," Jones said. "They all could be major contributors to the team." In a scrimmage Wednesday, Jones said he was pleased with how the game flowed. "I was impressed with some areas and I see some things we need to work on," Jones said. "I got excited when some of the plays developed and the guys are picking things up pretty fast." Jones added that while the defense made steps to fix its defensive problems on the court last season, not only will NT need to shave points off of the opponents scoring but keep the other team from attempting as many shots. "We felt like we made some improvements on defense last year," Jones said. "But we haven't made the strides that we would have liked to. I think we made a ten-point improvement in terms of our defense. I think with the addition of our new guys in the post and the perimeter we have a chance to do that."

Soccer team to face Louisiana-Lafayette today October 18, 2002 After a short two-game home stand, the Mean Green soccer team heads back on the road for a three-game road trip. NT's first test is against Louisiana-Lafayette (4-5-3, 1-1-1) at 7 p.m. today. The Mean Green has beaten the Ragin' Cajuns both times the two teams have faced off with NT shutting them out both times. NT (9-4, 3-2) could earn its 100th win in school history with a victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. Besides the century mark in wins for the team, it would also secure a winning season. This would make the eighth straight year in which the team had a winning season. In the Mean Green's last game, it shut out Sun Belt Conference foe, Middle Tennessee 6-0. In the match, both junior forward Marilyn Marin, and sophomore forward Melinda Pina earned hat tricks. It was Pina's first game back since the Sept. 22 3-0 win against Tulsa. For her work Pina earned Sun Belt Player of the Week honors from the conference. "We have three games left in the conference," head coach John Hedlund said. "We feel like if we win those three games, we can get the second seed in the [sun Belt Conference] tournament and anything can happen. We want to get an easy game going into the tournament and rest some of the starters."

Gregory Leads North Texas Past Grambling State, 3-0 DENTON - The North Texas women’s volleyball team (11-12) won its fourth consecutive match Tuesday night, cruising to a 3-0 (30-8, 30-10, 30-23) victory over Grambling State (8-18) in a non-conference match at the Snake Pit. It took North Texas just one hour and five minutes to put the Lady Tigers away in match that was dominated by the Mean Green’s serving game and relentless offensive attack. Led by freshman Brittney Gregory’s school-record 10 service aces and match-high 11 kills, North Texas piled up 19 aces (6.3 per game) and 50 kills (16.6 per game). The Mean Green’s 19 aces ties the school record, originally set in 1997. "We attacked them with the serve and didn’t let up" said North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick. "It was nice that we were able to put the ball where we wanted to." The Mean Green posted at least a .533 hitting percentage in the first two games as it handed Grambling State double-figure losses in each one. North Texas managed just a .128 hitting percentage in the third game, but still finished the match with a .356 percentage. Ahead two games to none and clearly in control of the match, North Texas had the luxury of being able to adjust its lineup in the third game and give a number of players some significant action on the court. For the entire match, 13 different North Texas players got a chance to contribute and all did with at least one kill, ace, assist or dig. "I thought we came out focused and did a good job the first two games," said Headrick. "We changed our lineup in the third game and mixed some things up with our personnel. It was nice to be able to rest some players, but more than that we didn’t want to suffer an injury in the middle of our conference schedule," said Headrick. Gregory achieved her first career double-double in odd fashion with double-digit kills and service aces. She also produced a .429 hitting percentage and had three blocks. Six players for North Texas had at least five kills and four had at least five digs. North Texas’ all-time kill leader, Corina Marginas, only played in the first game but produced a 1.000 hitting percentage with five kills and no errors in five attempts. Brieanne Fowler had a match-high 10 digs to lead a North Texas defense that held the Lady Tigers to a -.025 hitting percentage. Kristin Sheppard had a match-high 33 assists. Not only has North Texas won its last four matches, it has also swept its last three opponents and won its last 11 games in a row. Its four-match winning streak is the longest since putting together seven consecutive victories in 1995. The Mean Green has now shut-out seven opponents this season, also the most since recording nine in 1995. The Mean Green will resume Sun Belt Conference play this Friday when they host Florida International at 7 p.m.
