  1. Woohoo!!! Go Meager!!! More PT for Meager is just what I wanted to see. Now there's an understatement. It really does baffle me why our QB situation is so dire and our offense is so bland, considering our head coach is a former college QB himself. I searched, but couldn't find anything...did DD just hand off the ball for four years at KSU or did he actually pass more than 10 times a game? I thought I had read somewhere that he was a pretty good passing QB, which would lead me to further confusion about his coaching style.
  2. I pray we never get lucky enough to upset Texas on a fluke. That upset would seem to satisfy many of our fans for at least the next 50 years...regardless of if we ever win another OOC game. I think most of us want to get to the point where beating a poor Baylor or SMU team wouldn't be considered an upset. Personally, I feel it's a little embarrassing to be considered the best team in a conference (obviously I'm not talking about this season) but still be considered an underdog against a cellar dweller from any other conference.
  3. Maybe I shouldn't, but I really feel bad for the FIU guys. I mean, I'm glad we won the game, but 7 OTs and still a big goose egg in the win column for FIU. They've had some other really close losses too: 7-6 loss to MTSU 21-20 loss to S. Florida 33-28 loss to Bowling Green 14-10 loss to Marlyand I wish they could have pulled out wins in the S. Florida and Maryland games.
  4. Nice headline from ESPN, "After 8 missed FGs, North Texas prevails in 7 OTs" - I'm sure we can expect more of the same from the DMN and any other pub we may get from this...not exactly the kind of attention I prefer.
  5. Wow! That is impressive. I wish I had at least listened to Georgie's play-by-play on that...maybe it will be on the Ticket's "Homer call of the week". However, I'm still struggling with the 7 combined missed field goals in OT (that HAS to be a record too). I can just imagine how the media will poke fun at the SBC for that. Nevertheless, I'm happy we won...regardless of how ugly it may have been. GO MEAN GREEN!!
  6. Here's the second: http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/...nt.31f63c7.html Seventh heaven: UNT wins in record-tying 7 OTs 11:11 PM CDT on Saturday, October 7, 2006 By BRETT VITO Denton Record Chronicle DENTON – Denis Hopovac hit a 34-yard field goal attempt in the last half of the seventh overtime, giving North Texas a 25-22 win over Florida International on Saturday night at Fouts Field in a game that tied for the longest in NCAA history. Only two other games in history of college football have gone to a seventh overtime, the last coming in Arkansas' 71-63 win over Kentucky in 2003. Hopovac had nine field goal attempts, tying an NCAA record. The last of those opportunities proved to be the game-winner for UNT, which ended a three-game losing streak. FIU's Dustin Rivest missed a 35-yard attempt in the first half of the seventh overtime, giving Hopovac a chance to win the game. The senior, who is in his first year as UNT's starter, connected to set off a wild celebration on the field. Hopovac went 5-for-9 on field goals, and Rivest went 3-for-7. Jamario Thomas set up Hopovac's game-winning kick with eight rushing yards on the Mean Green's final possession. Thomas finished with 38 carries for 124 yards to lead UNT (2-4, 1-1) in front of a crowd of 15,123. The Mean Green appeared as if it would win the game in regulation when sophomore Daniel Meager threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Johnny Quinn in the corner of the end zone with 2:00 left in the game. Meager extended UNT's lead to 16-13 with a 3-yard run on the 2-point conversion. Lionell Singleton gave some life to FIU (0-6, 0-3) when he returned the ensuing kickoff to the 50-yard line. The Golden Panthers tied it with six seconds left on a 28-yard field goal from Rivest. UNT's defense came up with a key play in the first overtime when cornerback Desmon Chatman stripped FIU tight end Samuel Smith on the first possession. Aaron Weathers recovered the ball, setting up a chance to win. The Mean Green squandered the opportunity when FIU threw Thomas for nine yards in losses and Hopovac came up short on a 52-yard attempt. The teams traded field goals in the second overtime, with Hopovac hitting from 27 yards before Rivest connected from 37 yards. The two then traded misses, with Rivest blowing opportunities from 26 and 36 yards in the second and third overtimes, respectively. Hopovac then bounced his attempt off the right upright from 29 yards on a potential game-winner before missing from 38 yards. Rivest hit from 19 yards in the fifth overtime before Hopovac hit from 29. Rivest had a chance to end the game in the sixth overtime after Hopovac missed from 47 yards but missed from 42 yards. Josh Padrick led FIU with 248 passing yards, and Julian Reams added 96 rushing yards. UNT's Maurice Holman made the key play of the first half on the last snap before the break. UNT had a 5-0 lead with 14 seconds left, when FIU's Julian Reams tried to dive into the end zone from a yard out. Holman met Reams in the air and stopped him just before he crossed the goal line. Holman's stop gave the Mean Green its second shutout in the first half this season. UNT also shut out SMU in the first half of a win over the Mustangs in Week 2. The Mean Green had a chance to take a larger lead, but squandered several chances. UNT drove into FIU territory four times, but came away with only a field goal. Those missed opportunities finally came back to haunt UNT.
  7. I missed the entire game tonight as I attended to personal matters, and it looks like a missed a lot of excitement. 7 OTs eh? Really?? But the score was only 25-22?? When I think of 7 OTs I think of Arkansas beating Kentucky 71-63 in 2003. Again, I missed the ENTIRE game and I'm trying to catch up without the benefit of a box score (ESPN is lagging). So, let me make sure I understand this correctly...the score at the end of regulation was 16-16, but the final score after 7 OTs was 25-22?? That means we scored three field goals in 7 OTs while FIU only scored 2 field goals in 7 OTs? This really is mind boggling. Don't OT possessions start at the opponents 25 yard line or does the SBC have different OT rules?
  8. Well, a good performance one out of five games is 20%. That means there's an 80% chance the crappy team will show up this Saturday. Let's just hope FIU is worse. Instead the old saying "may the best team win" I think "may the worst team lose" is more appropriate.
  9. Ding, ding, ding...our beloved Coach Fry already has one foot in the grave. Just one season of coaching UNT could push him over the edge and I'd hate for that to happen. Maybe we should go after Hayden Fox? He won a national championship and had 16-game winning streak for Minnesota State.
  10. I'm just throwing some more big names out there: Jimmy Johnson Terry Bowden Barry Switzer Spike Dykes Why would any of these guys come to UNT? They wouldn't...we'll get stuck with some other no name guy that can't coach his way out of a paper sack.
  11. because we SUCK!!! Does anyone think we could win the Texas 5A high school championship? I think SL Carroll might even be able to beat us.
  12. Just to clarify, that is certainly not my personal opinion. However, it is a common (mis)perception and SMU is the little university some Dallas media often refer to as "Harvard on the hill". True, but I couldn't think of any public universities meeting the criteria of having a crappy Athletics program, but excelling in Academics.
  13. That's great to hear!! I wasn't able to make it Tulsa, so I wasn't aware of that.
  14. I'm trying hard to come up with some points to disagree with you, but I can't find many. I want BOTH - a great football team and academic excellence! Why can't I have BOTH?? Ok, let me ask everyone this - would you rather UNT become more like Texas Tech (not really known for it's academic prowess, but has a pretty decent sports program) or SMU/Rice (laughing stocks of the college football universe, but compared to Harvard for Academics)??
  15. LOL...I guess I was just looking for something that indicated progress on Athletics...maybe an update on construction or even a response to the DMN article on our poor football and Men's basketball graduation rates. Even a simple comment about the Homecoming game, in general, may have given me hope that Athletics will be a priority for Ms. Bataille.
  16. While this is some good news, I don't find much I can get excited about from an athletic perspective: Welcome to your new UNT Insider, which was redesigned with you in mind. I want the UNT Insider to help keep you informed about university news and events, while allowing us to have an open dialogue about the future of our university. I look forward to visiting with you each month. Before I arrived, I was deeply impressed by what I had learned about UNT, and after just six weeks here, I am more certain than ever that our university is poised for even greater success and recognition. This fall, nearly 90 new faculty members representing 42 disciplines arrived at UNT from a variety of prestigious institutions and corporations across the globe, coming from as far away as Mexico and Thailand and as nearby as Austin and Dallas. These faculty members join the ranks of nearly 900 scholars who are already dedicated to providing an extraordinarily rich academic experience for our students. As I meet faculty members and talk with them, it is immediately clear that they take immense pride in striving for an ever stronger foundation of educational excellence from which we will continue to advance. In addition, our freshman class is the largest to date. This fall, we welcomed 3,885 first-time college students onto our campus. This newest crop of talented, bright students also has the highest average SAT score — 1105 — in UNT history. By the way, UNT's increased average SAT score continues to surpass state and national averages, which are declining. There is no doubt we can expect great things from these students. As a university, we are on the brink of solidifying our identity as a student-centered public research university with a national and international presence. We will put UNT on a map bigger than just North Texas. With green pride, Gretchen M. Bataille President
  17. I like that nickname but I think I'll stick with mine; Darrel H(and)O(ff) Dickey. HO better have the team ready to play this Saturday.
  18. 1. Troy 2. FAU 3. FIU
  19. I'm glad you mentioned this. The New Orleans Bowl is great, but let's face it...it doesn't rank very high on the "wish list" of bowls. Not many in the world of college football consider the NOB to be a legitimate bowl game. And I wouldn't be real surprised if a Big XII, SEC or Big 10 school declined an NOB invite, should they be invited because the SBC and/or CUSA representative fail to meet bowl eligibility requirements.
  20. Well, that's why I asked...so maybe it was just me. I interpreted that laugh as a lackadaisical attitude. He obviously said some things at half time that got the team fired up, so I'll give him the benefit of a doubt.
  21. What a valiant effort. FIU drove from their own 20 to the Maryland 9 and lost the game as time expired. The last play was a 45 yard pass.
  22. In the post-game interview with Georgie, DD takes full responsibility for having NOT prepared the football team for this week's game. As he's describing what happened in the first half he said, "They (Akron) sort of just had their way with us." and actually laughed it off with a few chuckles. Is it just me or is that attitude something to get upset about?
  23. But that "fat lady" hasn't started singing yet...unless ESPN is lagging. FIU has the ball at the 20 with 1:35 remaining.
  24. Damn...you're absolutely right. I guess I got excited that an SBC team was actually playing a close OOC game this week. Oh well...good show FIU.
  25. 1:44 to go and FIU is leading 14-10.
