Does it really matter?? You think UNT is any aspiring coach's "dream job"?? Maybe it will be one day...but we're a looong way from that right now. This guy was the OC of the 2003 co-National Championship team (#1 in ESPN/USA Today poll).
-
I'm on board with this guy. This is a big step up; former SMU OC to former LSU OC. All those in favor.... You're all clear RV, make the offer!!
-
Regardless if it's just a couple of years, it would be worth it.
-
I understand the fascination with Dodge. He's had more national TV games in the last three years than most mid-major universities and the SLC vs. Euless Trinity game drew 40K+ in attendance last weekend. He can immediately bring a good deal of excitement and national exposure to our program, not to mention the SLC pipeline we'd excpect to have. He has a ton of potential, I'm just not sure I'm ready to take that risk and crown him our saviour.
-
OK, OK, I get the message...like I said it's just a pipe dream. I'm just a little uneasy about the HS to College transition, even though he has prior collegiate coaching experience. If you think TD would have a hard time answering to a head coach, how do you think OCs/DCs (with collegiate coaching experience) are going to feel about having to answer to someone who was a HS coach this year? Or, are we to expect TD to bring the whole SLC coaching staff to UNT??
-
I definitely want TD on our coaching staff and I would support him 100% if hired as our Head Coach. But, I would be absolutely ecstatic and totally confident in the decision to hire him as OC/Asst. Head Coach, while hiring another candidate on our short list as HC. That would allow us to hire a Head Coach who may have more collegiate coaching experience, be defensive-minded or be a recruiting guru and stipulate that his hire was contingent on hiring TD as OC/Asst. HC. Baylor accomplished a similar feat when they hired Canton HS's Head Coach, Gary Kinne as their LB Coach. Soon after Kinne's hire his son, a top QB recruit, committed to Baylor. Of course this is my dream scenario and is probably out of the question since some doubt TD would even accept the UNT HC position...but it sure would be nice if it happened.

Georgia Tech's Modkins interested in UNT job
gangrene replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Same here...I'd like to be considered for the HC job and I worked in the concession stand with RV last year. Seems to me like that should count for something?!?! RV, I'm waiting by the phone for that call! -
Georgia Tech's Modkins interested in UNT job

I'm starting to notice a trend here...former RV associates seem to be coming out of the woodwork. -
not no but...HELL NO!!!!!
-
So the new SA Services Center might be called the "Strange Student-Athlete Services Center"?? Hmmm....that's sure to raise a few eyebrows during recruiting visits.
-
Ok, I was just curious if his profile was high enough for you. Personally, I was very confident in hiring TD about two months ago. I can't say that I'm not still confident he's the right man for the job, but I'm nervous as hell about this hire because I know how much is riding on it. I can't believe I'm saying this but I wouldn't want to be in RV's shoes right now. However, if I believed everything I've been posting for the last three months then I'd know there are no fewer than a dozen coaches who could be successful at UNT.

PMG - you're on board with a Todd Dodge hire?
-
And I forgot to add that I found a possible fit for our former DD: He wouldn't have to move too far from Denton.
-
I wasn't aware of a second DD either, so I did a little research and, sure enough, Daryl Dickey is the QB coach at FSU How bad would that be if he suddenly became a candidate for our Mean Green??? I also found this on the footballscoop.com page:
-
Exactly. I think most of this speculation being reported in the press is coming straight from the GMG site. By the way, I heard from a very reliable source that Mack Brown, growing tired of the tremendous pressure he faces every year at UT, is now strongly considering the UNT job!!
-
OT - thanks for the updates! I was more than a little worried that all recruiting had ceased since DD's dismissal. It's nice to know that some contact is still being made with potential recruits. That being said, I'd still prefer to have names and more details so UNT fans (including myself) could research, read about and even watch HS playoff games with potential future Mean Green stars. I hope that our new coaching staff abandons the failed stealth recruiting techniques.

Oh, that is funny...I'm laughing so hard my wife ran in here to see what was the matter with me. That looks much funnier in the sign format than it did in my mind. Thanks KDL.
-
http://dallasnews.rivals.com/viewrank.asp?ra_key=1618 I count four early commitments to SMU - shouldn't we contact those recruits and cite our 2006 victory over SMUt as an obvious indication of our athletic dominance and main reason to choose UNT over SMU???
-
If my memory is correct, he was the first head coach to replace the legendary Freddie James. Those were some big shoes to fill.
-
Hmmm....I'm very interested. My one concern is this: A four-year letterman as a wide receiver and a two-time letterwinner in track & field at North Texas, Chambers earned his degree in journalism in 1982. He began his coaching career in 1984 as a freshman coach at Carter and then moved over to tutor the junior varsity's offense from 1986-88. While at Carter, Chambers helped develop future NFL players Jessie Armstead (LB, New York Giants & Washington Redskins), Jirmetrius Butler (CB, St. Louis Rams), Greg Hill (RB, Kansas City Chiefs & Detroit Lions), Kendall Jacox (OL, New Orleans Saints) and Darryl Jones (WR, New York Giants). Wasn't 1999 the year the Carter HS football stars decided to moonlight as bank robbers??? (Which means they may have been JV players in '88) Other than that one little, miniscule footnote, he sounds like a terrific candidate.

DRC Villarreal hold NT's FB Fate, Dodge talked
gangrene replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
I have to agree with Brett Vito's comments/concerns, but I count far more than two "challenges" left by DD. Glad to hear that RV undestands what an absolute necessity it is to recruit DFW but, I hope he also understands the need to have a disciplined coach who can motivate players to believe they can win the "body bag games" AND alumni/fans in order to generate excitement for the program. We need someone who's not afraid to take a few risks in the OOC games in order to pull off the big upsets...an aggressive, innovative football mind who also just so happens to be a marketing genius and the most likable guy any HS football has ever met. Is that too much to ask?? Guys...I'll be honest, I'm really nervous about this hire. I definitely know firing DD was the right thing the do, but we've got a lot riding on the shoulders of our TBD coach. What if it turns out (three years from now) that DD was right about how difficult it is to recruit good athletes to play football in Denton? Or what if, as Brett Vito suggests, we hire the wrong coach and we continue to be at the bottom of the SBC pack?? I know my support (and most everyone on this forum) will continue through thick and thin, but we need to greatly increase our fan base in the DFW area if we are to achieve the success so many of us envision. Winning is the easiest way to cure all of our problems but there are plenty of obstacles to overcome before we can get back on the winning track take this program to new heights. -
ESPN is reporting this story as well.
-
Sounds like they need to find their new coach outside the liquor stores.

Dodge to possible suitors, wait till the season en

I think reporters are spending far too much time on GMG.com!!! -
I just heard that song, "I Get Knocked Down," by Chumbawamba and thought about your "Danny boy" reference. What a great theme song that would have been for all those involved with UNT football this season: DD - Oh Danny boy, Danny boy, Danny boy... Danny boy - I get knocked down, but I get up again, you're never keep me down UNT alums and fans - Pissing the night away, pissing the night away http://www.leoslyrics.com/listlyrics.php?hid=PcAgYNsSZHU%3D
