Ouch, #16 Seed Likely For Sun Belt Champ
gangrene replied to akriesman's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I'm game too. We'd have the full attention of the national audience since it will be the ONLY NCAA tourney game being played at that time. -
I wouldn't put a whole lot of faith in ESPN's bracketology predictions. Yesterday the SBC had a 15 seed when they had picked Western Kentucky to win the SBC tourney.

What Play Will Dodge Open With Against The Sooners?
gangrene replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
I'd opt for the swinging gate or a new version of the fumblerooski. Wouldn't that just piss OU off to have three consecutive trick plays run against them (counting those last two by BSU)?? Even more so if they were all run for scores!! -
2007-08 Mean Green Football Schedule - Revised?
gangrene replied to gangrene's topic in Mean Green Football
Which is why I posted that exact same comment in my initial post and why I'm so confused about where that particular game will be played. Maybe the person who wrote the press release was just reading the same schedule the rest of us read and making comments based on that schedule? Or....maybe someone in the athletic department is just trying to prove to me why they don't post future schedules (since I've been a vocal critic of that tactic)???!!! -
Ok, I already posted this on the pinned thread, but I am now questioning the accuracy. The meangreensports.com website now shows this as our 2007-08 schedule: Date Opponent Location Sat, Sep 01 Oklahoma at Norman, Okla. Sat, Sep 08 SMU at Dallas Sat, Sep 22 Florida Atlantic * Denton Sat, Sep 29 Arkansas at Fayetteville, Ark. Sat, Oct 06 Louisiana-Lafayette * Denton Sat, Oct 13 Louisiana-Monroe * Denton Sat, Oct 20 Troy * at Troy, Ala. Sat, Oct 27 Middle Tennessee * Denton Sat, Nov 10 Navy Denton Thu, Nov 15 Arkansas State * at Jonesboro, Ark. Sat, Nov 24 Western Kentucky Denton Sat, Dec 01 Florida International * at Miami, Fla. * Conference Games Now, if I'm reading that correctly, we have SIX home games and the game against Louisiana Lafayette is in Denton and not Lafayette, as was originally reported. I don't know if the schedule was posted incorrectly the first time or if it is posted incorrectly now, but something's not adding up right. That Lafayette game definitely said it was being played in Lafayette the first time the schedule was posted and the corresponding article even from 3/1/07 (which is still posted) confirms that I can't find any article announcing that a correction or change was made to the schedule. So what's right??? Mean Green 2007-08 Football Schedule
-
I just checked meangreensports.com and it shows us with SIX home games this year instead of the five shown in the schedule Harry originally posted. The one change is the game against Louisiana Lafayette, which will be a home game according to the website. That gives us six home games and two of those within the first five games of the season...not ideal (when compared to the big schools who play the first four games at home), but hopefully addresses the concerns many of us had with playing only one home game in the first five weeks of the season. In fact, we should get on a pretty good SBC roll by playing our first three (and four of the first five) conference games at home. 2007-08 UNT Football Schedule

On the contrary, when's the last time we received a commitment from a recruit that was offered a ship at UT?? It's the majority of Texas HS football player's dream to play at UT, that's why UT has the #1 recruiting class in Texas year after year. I think our future recruits will understand that and it could be a long time before we are able to steal any recruits from UT. The kids we may get are the ones who are smart enough to realize how easy it is to get lost in the shuffle at UT (which, unfortunately is I what fear will happen to Riley) and will choose to be the 'big fish in the little pond' at UNT where they may be able to start immediately and excel against SBC competition. Now, if Riley had committed to SMU or Rice, I wouldn't have the same argument.

Junior Day.....how Does This Work, Smu To Have 1st One
gangrene replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
How do you know DD didn't have one?? I heard that DD sent out secret invitations requesting parents and recruits to arrive in Denton wearing all black attire. They were then instructed to meet at the 50-yard on Fouts field at midnight and Junior Day was held in the basement of Fouts. We never saw any early commits because those who committed were banned from announcing it until national signing day. -
Yeah, I noticed that too. If he continues at that pace, he may be bigger than Vince Young by the time he enrolls at UT.
-
Mark those words...I agree, it won't happen...not now, with UT in the running for a national championship every year.
-
And so the speculation ends...what position will Riley play, did TD want him at UNT, does UNT pay enough to get Tre' Newton, etc. etc. At least we won't have to worry about this for another year.

It's already on DMN. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...ts.d59cd47.html Carroll's Dodge, Newton commit to UT 08:47 PM CST on Saturday, February 24, 2007 By BRANDON GEORGE / The Dallas Morning News bgeorge@dallasnews.com Coach Mack Brown has said he recruits winners to play football at the University of Texas. On Saturday, Brown received oral commitments from a pair of juniors who have never lost a high school game. Southlake Carroll quarterback Riley Dodge and running back Tre' Newton said they committed to UT while attending the Longhorns' second Junior Day. Texas now has pledges from 14 players for its 2008 signing class, matching Texas A&M for the most in the nation so far. Dodge (6-0, 182) and Newton (6-0, 185) are two of the most dynamic offensive players returning in high school football. Dodge, The Associated Press' 2006 Class 5A state offensive player of the year, passed for 4,184 yards and 54 touchdowns and rushed for 1,119 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior. Newton had 274 carries for 2,010 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. Dodge and Newton are undefeated as starters at Carroll, which has won four 5A state titles and is 79-1 in the last five seasons. "Coach Brown talked about how we have never lost a game in high school and he was impressed with that," Riley said. Dodge said Texas recruited him as an athlete. He said Texas coaches told him they'd probably use him at wide receiver or defensive back but wouldn't rule out playing him at quarterback if needed. Dodge said he chose UT over offers from SMU, Tulsa, Rice and North Texas, where his father, Todd, became the head coach in December after leading Carroll to the Class 5A Division I state championship. "I'm sure my dad wanted me to go to North Texas, but he's so excited for me," Riley said. "It doesn't get much better than this." Todd was a four-year letterman at quarterback at Texas from 1982 to '85. Todd ranks ninth all time at Texas with 2,791 passing yards. Riley said he told his father Wednesday that if Texas offered him Saturday, he was going to commit. Riley said he attended Texas' Junior Day with his mother, Elizabeth, while Todd was in Missouri. "I'm so happy," Riley said. "This is my dream school. My parents gave me the blessing, and I'm excited to be a Longhorn." Newton, the son of former Cowboys' offensive lineman Nate Newton, said he chose Texas over offers from Nebraska, Kansas and Mississippi. Newton said his parents accompanied him on the Junior Day visit to Texas. "Texas was on the top of my list," Tre' said. "The whole coaching staff is Christians and they're all about academics. Both are important to me." Dodge and Newton said they would be graduating early from Carroll and would enroll at Texas in January 2008. "It's great how it worked out that we'll stay together," Newton said. Added Riley: "I'm just happy to be a part of the Texas family." Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day a recruit in the Class of 2008 can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 6.

Agreed. In fact, if I was Riley (and I assumed tha my size will discourage NFL coaches), I'd seriously consider going to Hawaii...not necessarily because they have a good football team (which they do and Riley would actually be a good fit IMO) but because I'd be on scholarship...and I can't imagine a better place in the US to spend four years with all (ok most) expenses paid. But, then again, that's just what I would do and you could say I'm a little biased to the tropical climate because I have a second home in the Philippines.

Like maybe this guy for example??? WR, DB or kick returner...sounds like they have absolutely no idea where he may play, but a part time WR who only had 5 catches for 65 yards in the entire season doesn't sound very promising to me.
-
Speaking of Hank DickeNson, is it just me or does it seem just a tad bit strange to have our university's Deputy Athletic Director also serving as our radio network color commentator (for football and home BB) and play-by-play analyst for road BB games?? Can this same sort of scenario be found at other D-1A schools?

Arkansas Swaps Dates For Kentucky, North Texas Games
gangrene replied to mgsteve's topic in Mean Green Football
Yeah, that's a VERY weak non-conference schedule. I know they have a home-and-home schedule with Texas in '08 and '09 and I think they're working out the details for a home-and-home with TCU some time in the next five years, but it seems like they only intend to play one decent non-conference opponent each year. Our old pal, DD, should be happy to know that Utah State will be making the trek to Fayetteville for one of those dreaded 'money games' in '08. -
Then that would be the source of my frustrations. Frankly, I don't really care if "some shifting of conference games" occurs and I'd guess most everyone would have similar sentiments, as long as the phrase 'subject to change' was footnoted somewhere on the schedule. I like what Troy does Troy's future schedules and would love if www.meangreensports.com would do the same.

Looks like maybe there are still a few SLC personnel that we could really use at UNT. What other high school has a sponsor for it's practice field? http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...l.1dce9f0f.html SL Carroll sells naming rights to workout facility 10:57 PM CST on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 By MATT WIXON / The Dallas Morning News mwixon@dallasnews.com The Southlake Carroll school district and Performance Course training centers have agreed to a 10-year, $300,000 contract for the naming rights to the indoor workout facility at Carroll Senior High. The district's board of trustees approved the deal Monday night by a 6-1 vote. The Performance Course Stalcup Training Center will also honor the memory of former Carroll football assistant Charlie Stalcup, who died in 2004 of melanoma.

2008 Recruiting...a Few Nibbles Out There This Early
gangrene replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Who's Tre Newman? Thanks for posting the info. I've commented about Riley's consideration set before , so I won't beat that dead horse again. Blake Cantu has some skills. He had a nice, one-handed catch in an SLC highlight reel and had a good junior season. I think (and hope) we'll have the advantage with Cantu at recruitment time. I didn't think he was that tall though...guess he's still a growing boy! I don't know a thing about the other recruits you posted, but it sure is nice seeing UNT being considered with schools like West Virginia, A & M and OK (that's OU right?)!! -
I've been working on this myself because I'm anxious to make travel arrangements. Here's what I have so far: 09/01 @ OU (confirmed on OU's website) 09/08 @ SMU 09/29 @ Arkansas (Fayetteville, confirmed on Arkansas' website) 10/20 @ Troy (confirmed, but subject to change, on Troy's website) 10/27 @ MTSU 11/03 @ FAU 11/10 vs. Navy (confirmed on Navy's website) I have no idea what dates we will play La-Monroe, La-Lafayette, ASU or FIU. I've heard Western Kentucky will be our 12th opponent this year but I haven't seen this in writing by a trusted source.

I'm sick of hearing that comment too!

2008 Recruiting - Apparently, Now Is Not The Time To Rest
gangrene replied to gangrene's topic in Mean Green Football
That statement didn't sound quite right to me last week, and now I'm almost certain it can't be correct. How could Texas Tech host a Junior day last weekend without the coaches being able to contact the players? Texas Tech hosted its first Junior Day of the 2008 recruiting season this weekend. Now I don't have the time nor the desire to sift through the NCAA recruiting rules and bylaws to find all the entries pertaining to recruiting HS Juniors, but just in case some of you do, here's the link: NCAA Recruiting Recruiting Juniors is a sign of the times and we need to jump on the bus ASAP or we're going to get left behind. No, we don't directly compete with Texas or Tech for recruits, but recruiting Juniors is a trend that will eventually reach all D1-A schools and we'll need to start doing the same if we expect to ever reel in some 4 or 5 star recruits. -
Unless he has a major growth spurt in the next couple of years, Riley has a snowball's chance in hell of playing at the "next level" (up from Tech).
-
Unfortunately, I'm starting to resign myself to the possibility that Riley may not be wearing a Mean Green uniform in the fall of 2008. And that possibility is almost a certainty for Tre' Newton.
