Big Money Backing A N E W Texas College Team
gangrene replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Isn't this the guy that Darrell Dickey replaced?? Hmmm...how ironic would that be if he gets an HC job in Texas?? Maybe Ramon Flanigan can join him? -
I think the O-line has to be up there pretty high. Every year it seems all the top-rated offensive linemen consistently get snatched up by the elite schools such as Michigan, Ohio State, USC, Texas, OU, etc. I was just checking the Rivals OL list for 2008, and this year is already starting to resemble past years. I also found this kid from Brenham, Desmond Carr, who is listed at 6'7", 380 lbs. Isn't TD good friends with the Brenham HS HC? I know big doesn't necessarily translate to good and that probably has even more relevance in TD's offense, but you've got to imagine it would take a defender a little bit longer to get around someone that big? And, while I'm at it, check out this monster at 6'11", 305 lbs.

Check out this one (he says he has relatives in Denton): http://www.ponyfans.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.p...f68beac07c6b0ac I almost want to go after him just to steal him from SMU.

Scout.com Reports Another 4 Star To Visit
gangrene replied to Charlie NT 73's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, he's considering TTech and we all know that TTech doesn't even make their athletes go to class, ala Byron Hanspard's 0.0 GPA his Junior season. Yes, I know, this was ten years ago...but you can bet that this sort of thing still happens, and not just at TTech. -
Oil Bowl To Feature 4 North Texas Signees

It looks like the Jack Rabbits built a new stadium since the last time I was in Forney. It's hard to tell from that picture if that's even the Forney stadium, but it looks new and the turf looks great. -
Yep, according to that one genius anyway. Honestly, I think TTech has already seen their best season under Leach and will go no where but down now.
-
Eff them...it's impossible to have an intelligent, affable conversation with those turds. I've tried before and they always resort to insults and belittling tactics rather than trying to make reasonable, valid points. Tech fans are the same way. I was perusing one of their forums the other day and there was a discussion about how many 2008 verbals TAMU had (14 at the time of the post) vs. the one verbal that TTech had. One poster tried to comfort Tech fans by stating, "Tech is recruiting higher caliber players, players who are hoping to get looks from the national powerhouses, so they don't want to commit early." What a bunch of retards.

He was virtually untouched in most of his long runs in those clips. I suspect that is because the opponent was off-balance and expecting a pass and I anticipate seeing some very similar highlight clips for Jamario this year.

Excellent news! Another player who is listed as a DCTF "Top 20" at his position (in the state of Texas, of course).
-
DCTF starts hitting newstands today...be patient, it will be everywhere (grocery stores, drugstores, Walmart, Target, etc) by the end of the week.

When was the last time NT got mentioned by any sports news source for picking up any early commitment in June?

His parents must have a great sense of humor!

Emmitt/MG61 - Thanks for posting the info about who made the W/L predictions. Nothing against Vito, but the fact that the DCTF staff compiled the W/L predictions just gave that 7-5 prediction a little more credibility to me. Knowing that the record prediction is the opinion of more than one person also adds a great deal more pressure to TD and staff to live up to those expectations, IMHO. Not that TD and staff care about who predicts what but, if the media as a whole has such high expectations, they will certainly make their opinions known if UNT falls short of them. All that aside, I am so anxious to see how the incoming Freshman class factors into the 2007 season and I can't wait for the first game....well, maybe not the first game (since it's against OU) but I definitely expect to see BIG things in our game against SMU and I'm looking forward to beating the Ponies for the second consecutive time.
-
Actually, no. The prediction is 7-5 with no bowl appearance. You'll have to pick up a copy to find out who the projected SBC champ is. Yes, I would be pleasantly surprised too...nevertheless, those were my expectations for this season even before I read this article. I think the thought process here is that the team will have a full grasp of the new offense by the time we play Navy plus the fact that we're at home (which sure as hell didn't mean anything the last two years), whereas SMU is just our second game of the season, and it's a road game??? Guys, keep in mind the DCTF UNT coverage was written by Denton RC's Brett Vito, and he probably made the W-L predictions as well. I love the exposure that Brett gets us in the DMN and he does a pretty decent job IMHO of trying to keep his opinions neutral, but he also wears a pair of green-tinted glasses and drinks a pitcher of green Kool-Aid every now and then...not that there's anything wrong with that. That being said, my expectations are for a 7-5 record (or better) because I think we definitely have the talent to dominate the Belt and now we have the disciplined coaching that this team has been lacking for the last few years. Also, keep in mind, we've got a very nice group of incoming Freshman that can and will contribute immediately. I'm expecting big things from Vizza, but even more so from our group of WRs. That two-deep depth chart listed in DCTF is liable to look very different at the beginning of the season.

Sorry Cooley. I've revised the first post so that others who want to wait and read it on Monday will have that option.
-
You're welcome Plumm. I had to think about my fellow gmg'ers first...everyone in my office (well, mainly one Aggie and a Longhorn) is trying to look at my copy, but I won't let them. (1) There are action shots of Jeremiah Chapman, Maurice Holman, Aaron Weathers, Jamario Thomas and the "Breakout Player" - Brandon Jackson. (2) Jamario Thomas has about a 1/2 page article discussing his similarities to Cyndi Lauper and how he wants to "regain his Freshman form" As greenminer mentioned, texasfootball.com has a good article about how they wanted to include more coverage of Todd Dodge and even considered him for the front cover, but had to trim the size of the annual down to allow for more advertising.

DCTF's rank of our current commitments: Troy Franklin - Top 25 DL Willie Taylor - Top 12 Athlete I don't see Darian Williams, Eloy Atkinson or Derek Tomlin listed on DCTF's evaluation. And, while I'm at it, here's the DCTF 2007 Post-Spring, two-deep depth chart: Offense WR Casey Fitzgerald, Isiah Smith LT Matthew Menard, Adam Venegas LG Adam Venegas, Tyler Bailey C Kelvin Drake, Chad Rose RG Chad Rose, Nick Foster RT Robert Peachey, Brian Carlson WR Korey Washington, Arthur Stubblefield WR Brandon Jackson, Roderick Johnson WR Brock Stickler, Ryan Davenport QB Daniel Meager, Nathan Tune TB Jamario Thomas, Deavin Cox K Steven Woodward, Truman Spencer Defense DE Jeremiah Chapman, Tye Rexrode DT Montey Stevenson, Jonathan Stewart DT Isaac Thomas, Joseph Miller DE Blake Burruss, Eddrick Gilmore OLB Brandon Monroe, Craig Robertson ILB Derek Mendoza, Tobe Nwigwe OLB Maurice Holman, Colt Mahan CB Antoine Bush, Gary Oubre CB Dominique Green, Desmon Chatman FS Aaron Weathers, Cliff Higgs SS Roy Loren, Kartey Agbottah P Truman Spencer, Steven Woodward Ok, I think that's about all I'll post for now. I want to leave everyone with a reason to run out on Monday and pick up their own copy of DCTF.

E A's College Football '08 Video Stadium Renderings
gangrene replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
Ah, that's a better picture than the one I saw before...now I can see the press box...but I still can't believe the size of our track. Have I mentioned just how much I hate having a track in a college football stadium??? That just looks so junior high but, come to think of it, my Junior HS didn't even have a track on the football field. Anyone have the statistics on the number of NCAA D-1A football stadiums with a track in it?? There can't be more than a handful. -

Is it just me, or does the size of the track seem to be a little disproportionate to the size of the football field???? And, where's the press box? -
Big News From The Letterman's Fish Fry

Sir, I did not have sexual relations with that woman! -
Well, I did say it was unlikely to occur. I've just noticed that a trend of rescinding ship offers seems to be developing lately. And, Mack's about the last person who would ever do something like that...still it IS a possibility. It's also slightly possible that Mack could accept another coaching position at someplace like Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida State or the NFL and the new coaching staff at UT could choose to not honor Riley's scholarship offer. (Just for the record, I don't think there's a chance in Hell that would happen either.)
-
I'm going to quote you NT80 because I pretty much agree with all of your comments. I still can not understand why the former regime couldn't do more with the spring game. However, I was a little disappointed today with the concession stand...they ran out of hot dogs at only 15-20 plays into the scrimmage!! I can't really give a complete assessment of the scrimmage because my four-month old daughter got a little unhappy at the mid-way point and required my full attention. Prior to that, I was not real impressed with the QBs to start the first few series. Meager went three and out and Phillips threw a pick (although that wasn't really his fault). Meager did seem much improved though and had a nice toss to Brandon Jackson that looked like should have been caught for a TD. Enroute to the second TD by the White team, Korey Washington caught a quick out pass, had a missed tackle and was quickly walked down by the DB. I thought Korey was faster than that? Evan Fentriss did look pretty good although it seemed the DBs were always right there. He doesn't appear to be all that fast but he knows how to use his body to shield the ball from the defender and, when I squinted a little, Evan looked somewhat like Johnny Quinn...it's a shame he has to sit out a year. I was also a little concerned that Fentriss seems to be the #1 or #2 receiver right now, but then I remembered just how little depth we have at that position until the Freshmen arrive in the fall. "Mixed bag" about sums it up. Meager seemed to gain more confidence as the game went on. I don't really have any comments on Phillips other than he put way too much air under one long pass he threw, resulting in a dead duck that should have been picked. I thought Woody looked pretty good. From what I saw, he wasn't asked to pass much. His running ability can serve as a great change of pace for defenses keying on the pass, but I'm not real sure I want to rotate QBs again. I REALLY hope that Giovanni Vizza comes in here and just blows everyone else away. I can't tell if the Defense looked good to start the scrimmage or if the Offense just couldn't execute properly. At any rate, the Defense certainly did tire more quickly than the Offense did and that largely contributed to some of the scoring. I think everyone agrees that the Offense did start slowly but that had to be somewhat expected, given the limited time to learn a new offense and the fact that this new offense is such a drastic departure from that thing we called an offense last year. Unfortunately, I only heard the cheers for the 87 yarder to Fitzgerald as I was taking my screaming child to the car. But, I looked around and I definitely wasn't the only one leaving early!!! What's up with that?? I think I had an excuse to leave early with my tempermental child, but why was everyone else leaving early?!?!?! Everyone keeps saying that the kicking game looked good and I'd agree except...didn't we miss an extra point?? Good summation. Unfortunately, I think expecting anything more than five to six victories this season is probably unrealistic. It will take Dodge some time to get this team up to speed on the offense and it will take some time to get the right personnel in place to do the job. Now, having said that, I'm still going to expect to go undefeated in the SBC and regain our rightful place in the New Orleans Bowl. 10-2 or 9-3 (with losses coming to OU, Arkansas and possibly Troy) is what I'm hoping to achieve and, yes, I'm drinking the green kool-aid again and, yes, I believe in the MEAN GREEN!!! Seriously though...I would have expected the same from last year's team with this year's schedule. We only have two "unwinnable" games on the schedule (OU and Arkansas) this season and there's no reason to not expect to be in a position to win the other ten. I just hate that we have to play SMU in the second game of the season. I'd like to play them a little later in the season when the team has a better grasp of the new offense. Ok, I guess that about sums up everything I have to say. Just as some others have already mentioned, I also dropped by Voertman's and dropped about a c-note to pick up some new UNT attire for the family. I absolutely can not wait until this football season to start!!!
