I think we all know what Meager can do against a defense with pads on! Let's just hope he's able to avoid those hard hits a little better this year. After re-watching the GV recruitment video, I'm hoping he can quickly befriend the sideline too. It just takes one full speed collision with a LB or safety to dislocate a throwning shoulder, break a rib or suffer a concusion. Don't get me wrong, I love the tough attitude and the fact that he's not willing to back down from a hit while running in the open field, but he has to be smart too. He can't do the team much good from the trainer's table. Early prediction: I predict Brock Stickler will surpass his 2006 total receptions and receiving yard stats in the first game of 2007 vs. OU.

Now that's COOL!!! I can just picture our team in those new white uniforms and white helmets playing on that Mean Kelly Green turf. If Boise State can have their blue turf why can't we have our Kelly Green turf?? The only thing missing from that picture is the sell-out crowd all dressed in...you guessed it...Kelly Green!!

I like that hat too and debated long and hard between that one and the one I chose. I picked the one with "North Texas" on the front simply because when I wear it, I want people to know that it's a UNT hat. I'm afraid the general public is still largely unaware that the SOW logo represents UNT. Then again, maybe I'm giving too much credit to the general public's ability to link "North Texas" to the University of North Texas too....when I was in Hong Kong recently, a woman saw "North Texas" written on my GREEN shirt and stopped me. I'll spare everyone the details of the ensuing conversation, but she basically thought that the "North Texas" on my shirt signified that I was from the North Texas area, as in DFW, and was completely unaware of the association with UNT (if she'd even heard of UNT - I was unable to determine that).
-
I'm glad everyone loves that hat. I, too, saw it at the spring game (both being worn by the coaching staff and for sale at Voertman's). Though I've seen the same style at several other universities (UT comes to mind), I'm not too fond of it. Maybe it will grow on me but, right now, it looks like someone cut up an 80's style jersey and sewed it onto the hat. I went for the more traditional look. I looked on Voertman's web site and they don't actually have the hat I purchased, nor do they have the one pictured on Coach George. The one I bought looks like this, only it has the "North Texas" and "Mean Green" on the back in all white letters. Here are several more nice designs available at Voertman's ***Warning, some images may be offensive as they contain colors other than kelly green, or any other variations of the color green. I'd like my wife to go to this because she knows almost nothing about the rules of football and, quite frankly, doesn't care to learn either. I've tried to explain some of the rules to her before and she'll listen for about five minutes, then her eyes will glaze over and I can tell I've totally lost her. It's just August 1 and yet she's already told me that she's sick of football. I think she'd enjoy it a lot more if she understood the game and I've told her that. Her reply - I don't want to like it because then it will just drive me crazy like it does you! It's kind of hard to argue with that logic.

I thought the same thing Rick. While the announcers only mentioned Penson's name a few times, I saw #10 all over the field. If he wasn't in on the tackle, he was there just after the tackle had been made. On a few pass plays I would see him on the screen when the camera was focusing on the QB passing, then the pass would be completed 10-15 yards down the field and I'd see #10 enter the screen again just as the tackle was being made.

Mules' Dibrell Landed In Denton Faster Than Expected
gangrene replied to mgsteve's topic in Mean Green Football
Of course, that's all dependent on the QB being able to throw the ball with a high degree of accuracy too. If the 5-yard out pass is thrown for 6 yards, it's an easy pick for a TD for the other team. I won't mention any names , but I don't have a whole lot of confidence in the accuracy of the QB that saw the majority of the playing time last year. -
I've got it on Tivo and just finished watching the first half. Yes, the announcers suck big time. He kept calling Dibrell Gamble and I don't even see a Gamble listed on the roster. Dibrell recovered the fumble and not Gamble...whoever the heck Gamble is. Dibrell dropped two passes that he should have easily caught. I saw Penson's missed tackle but he did slow the guy down enough for the rest of the D to stop. I also Penson make several big plays. I believe he was in the first clip of the highlights in the first half where he dropped back in pass coverage, made the read that the ball was going to his receiver, and then tackled the receiver just about the same time the ball reached him. ****I just found Gambill...not only did the announcer get the name wrong, but he got the position and the team wrong...Gambill was a CB on the North team ****
-
Why would he?? The first receiver was open by 5, 10, even 20 yards on several of those plays.

Remember To Watch Our Recruits Tonight

I think that goes without saying, quick...knock on some wood!! -
There are soooo many things I like about that video. Is it the QB or is it the system?? Who cares...we got both!! I like how many wide open receivers I saw. I like the fact that Riley hit those wide open receivers. I like the fact that a couple of DBs seemed to underestimate Riley's arm...and then got burned by that arm. I loved how Riley could scramble for 10, 20 or 30 yards and then had enough sense to get out of bounds to avoid the big hit. I liked Riley's pump fakes and I liked how accurate he was when throwing to WRs that were well covered. I liked how well Riley could maneuver when pass protection broke down. I like Riley's speed and I loved Blake Cantu's one-handed catch...I still hope we can reel him away from Oregon!

If These Guys Can Sell Investors On A $400 Million
gangrene replied to gangrene's topic in Mean Green Football
It's something that's definitely been done before. In Taos, I forgot if it's opening or closing weekend, several people traditionally ski Al's Run (which is directly under the chair lift) every year. -
I was thinking that we could whore out the helmet stickers to the highest corporate bidders. We could throw Wells Fargo, Budweiser, Miller Lite etc, logos on the helmet...maybe hold an auction for each player. I.e. QB gets one sponsor, RB gets another.

Looks like we'll be breaking the post-Labor Day fashion rule ...we've got white pants!

surely we can find someone to invest in UNT football...right?? Building a mountain and a ski resort in Texas?? Maybe if all GMG members promise to spend a weekend at the resort, they'll donate $20 million to UNT as a gesture of kindness?? Some of you may have heard about this idea back in April when it aired on FOX 4 News. According to this article in Commercial Property News, the resort could be located at the site of the former Intel Corp. land at Alliance in Fort Worth. Alliance is a 17,000-acre mixed use master planned development with a large intermodal hub along Insterstate 35. The 527-acre site, located at the intersection of Eagle Parkway and Interstate 35W, was abandoned in 2000. The plans had been for a $1.3 billion semiconductor plant in 1998. This story says they are trying to line up $700 million for this project. As crazy as it sounds, apparently this project is moving forward: Snowflex

Okla. St. hopes investing with alum Pickens will help athletic expansion
-
I agree with most of this. However, an occasional home game against a BCS school could do wonders for UNT if we had a larger stadium. Let's just say we got Oklahoma State (since they are playing at Troy this year) to visit our new 45,000 seat stadium and it sold out because OSU fans travel well and there is a decent amount of OSU alumni in the DFW area. Then let's say we averaged only 15,000 for the rest of the season; four more games this year. That's a total of 105,000 for five games which averages out to 21,000 per game. That one sell-out of the 45K stadium would be equal to three games at our 15K average and results in a 6K per game lift over the course of the season. When conferences are looking to expand, one thing they may consider is average attendance and the fact that we gained most of our season's attendance from a single game would not be considered in a negative way. In addition, we give our team a better chance to win by playing at home and we possibly gain additional national exposure with recruits by either live television broadcasts or highlight clips that will feature our stadium. I don't consider CUSA to be head and shoulders above the SBC but many CUSA schools were able to entice some pretty high profile programs to visit CUSA stadiums this year. Marshall will host West Virginia (home stadium seats 60K) in their 38,049 capacity Joan C. Edwards Stadium. UCF will host Texas (home stadium seats 85,123) in their brand new 45K Bright House Networks Stadium. Tulane will host LSU (home stadium seats 92,400) and Mississippi State (home stadium seats 55,082) in their home stadium, the New Orleans Superdome. Tulsa will host BYU (home stadium seats 64,045) in their 35,542 capacity Skelly Stadium. SMU will host Texas Tech (Jones Stadium seats 52,882) in 32,000 capacity Gerald Ford Stadium. Rice will also host Texas Tech in its 57-year old Rice Stadium, which seats 70K. Memphis will host Ole Miss (home stadium seats 60,580) in their 62,380 capacity Liberty Bowl. East Carolina will host North Carolina (home stadium seats 60K) in their 43,000 capacity Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Other interesting games in which a BCS school is visiting a non-BCS school: Middle Tennessee State will host Virginia (home stadium seats 61,500) in their 30,788 capacity Floyd Stadium. Florida International will host Maryland (home stadium seats 51,500) in their stadium which currently has permanent seating for 7,000. Florida Atlantic will host South Florida (home stadium seats 65K) in their 20K capacity Lockhart Stadium. Miami, OH will host Syracuse (home stadium seats 49,262) in their 24,286 capacity Yager Stadium. Utah will host UCLA (home stadium seats 91,500) in their 45,017 capacity Rice-Eccles Stadium. UNLV will host Wisconsin (home stadium seats 80,321) in their 36,800 capacity Sam Boyd Stadium. Colorado State will host California (home stadium seats 72,516) in their 34K capacity Sonny Lubick Field. On another note, I think the NCAA should enact a rule limiting the number of home games a school may schedule within one season. It's not fair that schools like Michigan (8 home, 4 away), Florida (8 home, 4 away), Auburn (8 home, 4 away), Arkansas (8 home, 4 away) and Oklahoma (7 home, 4 away, 1 neutral) have so many home games. It's not fair to the mid-majors and it's not fair to the other majors who go on the road to play the big games once in a while. Kudos to the PAC10 and Big East, as most their schools scheduled 6 home and 6 away games.
-
I agree that's a definite possibility. The bigger programs are definitely deeper and bigger, but they may also be vulnerable to a speedy return man with a good k/o blocking scheme. However, to your point, I could see the bigger program sealing the game in the 4th quarter with a couple of k/o returns for TDs against a very tired mid-major k/o coverage team.

The new NCAA rule will move the kickoff from the 35-yard line to the 30. Anyone know how strong Steven Woodward's leg is? Can he kick the ball 70-80 yards for a touchback?? Will Evyn Roman be our kick-off returner?? I see this rule as somewhat favorable for the mid-major schools when playing the majors. Why? Because it allows for more opportunities to get a quick 7 points and a momentum swing. I feel it sort of "evens the field" athletically (if you have a really speedy k/o return man) and takes out the size mismatches we face on line-of-scrimmage plays. Apparently, the Big XII coaches are all hot and bothered by this rule change per an article in the DMN: Rule has deep impact on Big 12 coaches Here's a Mike Gundy quote from that article: "I think it's the biggest rule change in college football," said Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy. "It will be a huge impact on the game – more than the clock rule changes last year." The NCAA also changed the rule of starting the clock as soon as the ball was kicked-off back to the way the rule was in '05, in which the clock will start when the receiving team touches the ball.

The UT basketball schedule was published in today's Dallas Morning News. According to the schedule posted in the DMN, we'll be playing in the Erwin Center on Wednesday, December 5. However, I just checked texassports and it shows that we play at UT on Sunday, December 2. It also shows that UT plays in the "Big 12/Pac 10 Hardwood Series" in Los Angeles on December 2 and plays at Rice on December 5. So, I guess we'll play at UT sometime in December...

Ahhh...now I can make out the cat's face. That's not so scary after all. I'm so glad you explained that. That picture has bewildered me for quite some time now.

Your avatar pic creeps me out...it looks like a face is in the helmet and the nose is hanging over the front of the facemask and the eyeball has popped out of the socket...scary stuff!!!! But, then again...maybe it's just me. I guess you'll be changing that picture to the new, white helmet soon?
