Defensive Schemed Lauged At By Ou Coaches?
gangrene replied to Green Crazy's topic in Mean Green Football
When you don't have the proper skill set (ie speed and size to match OU in man coverage), you'll never be able to do it correctly. It's an exercise in futility. It's the responsibility of the coaching staff to maximize the talents and abilities of our players so that they can succeed as a team. The problem is we were weren't in the correct defense to begin with. It doesn't take a genius to recognize that our 5'10", 161 lbs CB was totally outmatched by OU's 6'4", 217 WR. Yet the defensive scheme of man coverage was never altered to provide additional support. I support this coaching staff 100% but to say I was a little disappointed with the lack of in-game adjustments would be an understatement. -
Defensive Schemed Lauged At By Ou Coaches?

Actually, I can't really blame them. I tivo'd the game and watched the first half again in slo-mo last night...that was the most basic college defense I think I've ever seen. And to not change it after getting burned several times has me baffled beyond belief. -
Excellent!!! We are ranked #119...three spots behind Western Kentucky and sandwiched in between Utah State and FIU.

Speaking of betting, some person, or persons made, a butt-load off of TROY last weekend. That line opened at somewhere around 28 and had dropped to 23 by game time. Troy lost 46-26 and beat the spread. As someone that places an occasional wager, I know it takes a lot of one-way betting to swing the line by 5 points.

#3...nice!! I see SMU's on the waiting list.

I just went to the SMU ticket office and bought several of the $12 endzone seats. They tried their best to get me to upgrade to the $27 reserved seats. What can I say, I have a bunch of cheap friends and, considering none of them are UNT grads, I'm lucky I'm even able to get them to cough up the $12 considering SMU and UNT lost by a combined score of 128-19 last week. Anyway, the guy at the ticket office told me there were plenty of "good seats" still available.

KNTU is working just fine for me.

That's what had me scratching my head too. It shouldn't take more than one time of getting burned in man coverage to make the adjustment to a zone. I know Kelly's eyes must have gotten as big as saucers when he saw Roman move up to the line of scrimmage on him. We don't need seven in the box when they're throwing the ball 20 and 30 yards downfield.

I woke up this morning hoping that it was Saturday and that my horrible nightmare was just that...a nightmare. But, when I picked up the Sunday paper, my fears were confirmed; that fiasco I saw yesterday really happened. And, what was worse, is that the DMN had photos and headlines on the front of the Main News section and a larger picture on the front of the Sports Day (Part II) section. However, after reading through the three articles by three different writers, the coverage really wasn't that bad. They didn't slam us like they could have or kick us while we we're down. Even the headlines were kind (IMO), "Rough Welcome" and "Rough Start" are much more encouraging than what that could have chosen. On a side note, I wandered over to the SMU site this morning to see what they had to say. Funny thing is...some of their posters seem a little scared to play us. They must have seen something in that game that I didn't. Here's the link.

I thought I could give Meager another chance too...but I just can't...especially after liking what I saw of Vizza. Sure he threw a couple of picks but what QB doesn't throw a pick when they are down by 40+ points and trying to make something happen. Meager was much better than he was with DD and he was under a lot of pressure. However, I still saw the same old Meager...running backwards 20 yards and then heaving the wounded duck to the drop back for a two-yard loss. He holds on to the ball too damn long and he's gun-shy. Vizza didn't have any more time than Meager did and yet he managed to look downfield and complete the pass. Now, about our defense, I remember reading a quote from one of the OU receivers regarding watching SLC game film. He said something about how SLC ran a lot of man coverage and it looked like they would point out who was covering who just before the ball was snapped. He went on to say that they welcomed that type of coverage on Saturday. I'd say he got his wish. We can't play man coverage against superior athletes. Hell, no one can. You can't even do that in flag football and expect to be successful. I think and hope we learned that valuable lesson.

They showed him again later on...and I think I also saw Emmitt.
-
True...plus, it can't get much worse can it??
-
For all my Meager-bashing...I have to say that I was impressed to see the first person to greet Vizza on the sidelines after his second INT was none other than Daniel Meager. It looked like he was actually offering words of encouragement. (I sure as hell hope he wasn't giving him any advice!)
-
I think the biggest difference is that Vizza looks and actually throws downfield rather than runnig around for 4 seconds and throwing the ball to ball to the RB for a two-yard loss.
-
Woohoo!!! I got my wish!
-
I'm sick of it already!
-
Fine...let's lose by 100...what do we care??
-
I agree. Even Peyton Manning couldn't do anything with little amount of time our O-line is giving the QB. I'm hard on Meager because I know what he is (and is NOT) capable of...I want to see someone else...anyone else. Hell, put Phillips in...I don't care. I've only seen a few SLC games but I can't recall them ever throwing so many passes for lost yardage. I counted three such instances from Meager in the first half of tonight's game. I think he's making some bad reads, he's telegraphing his passes and he's hanging the ball out there...making the WRs wait for the ball and allowing the DBs time to get into position. TD's offensive system is all about hitting the WRs in stride and throwing to a spot on the field, rather than finding the open receiver and throwing to him. Meager is not doing that. He's finding WRs and throwing the ball to where there are when he releases the ball. That forces the WR to wait for the ball to arrive and allows the defense plenty of time to close in.
-
Stoops comments at halftime: I'm disappointed...we've made a lot of stupid penalties and we aren't be physical enough on the offensive line. We need to run the ball better. I sure hope they work on the running game a lot more during the second half.
-
Micah Mosely is already in the game. I hope Vizza is not far behind.
-
Just be glad it's not Barry Switzer or Jimmie Johnson in their college days...it could be worse (but not by much)! Going for the TD on 4th and 1 with 3+ minutes to go in the first quarter when they already had a 14-0 lead was purely classless.
-
Secondary had nothing to do with that bad pass that should have been completed for a TD just after the turnover at the OU 20. And the next play Meager gets sacked back at 31...taking us out of field goal range. Of course Venegas isn't really helping him much either with back-to-back penalties and then just standing around while Meager gets tackled....he looks more lost out there than Meager.
