Ah, the generator excuse again. If it's so expensive, who's the genius that decided we should rent them for each and every game rather than buy our own 30 years ago? How many night games have been played in the history of Fouts? Did anyone every bother to do a cost analysis on that? This is a tired excuse. One more note...I go to a couple of UT games a year and they have generators too. I'm not sure exactly what they power, but they always have several of the big, professional grade generators just outside the stadium gates.

I found that comment interesting as well.

Lewisville ISD rivalries headed for UNT I don't know how I missed this announcement, but it looks like we'll be getting the "Battle of the Axe" and the "Mound Showdown" in Fouts Field after all!! Great job! It sounds like this is just the start of LISD continuing their rivalry games on the UNT campus, as the LISD AD was given the horse and pony show regarding our new facilities. "Lewisville is kind of our extended community," UNT associate athletic director Brian Bethea said. "Having that opportunity to bring those people to our campus is huge, not only from an athletics standpoint but also a university standpoint." - I must say, it is reassuring to hear that, as I agree wholeheartedly with that statement.

One more thing....only 30 days left, and all the talk turns from speculation to realization...for better or worse.

I've found myself getting overly excited about this season a few times this year too. But, it seems every time I start thinking positive thoughts, someone links a story talking about how our defense was the worst in points allowed, by giving up a season total of 571 or an average of 47.6 ppg....and that our offense only scored 240 total points for the season for an average of 20 ppg, meaning that we were outscored, on average, 47 to 20. We really weren't even close in most of our games, but..... that was last season!!!!!! I really think Riley is going to be the catalyst to getting this offense going again and we're to win at least four games. I'd love to be in SBC title contention but I'll need to see a 3-1 start before I can believe that's possible this year.

As the football season nears, I thought I'd start some football talk with a collection of things that generally humor me, make me irate or, as in #5, make me sad. Please feel free to share your lists too. #10. Announcers stating, “I don’t know who this pass interference call is on...they were bumping and grinding all the way down the field.” #9. Announcers stating, “It’s third down and the running back is on the sideline getting a blow.” (This one always makes me chuckle though.) #8. Denison HS football announcer, “That’s a 15-yard roughing penalty again the defense.” #7. The time-out, called right as the ball is snapped for the winning field goal attempt. (I don’t mind “icing” the kicker, but this new method is a bit annoying.) #6. Fans that have to call someone on their cell phone and then wave to them on the TV....ugh, I especially hate this in baseball games...soooo annoying. Attention whores!! #5. How quickly the season seems to end (even 1-11 is better than no football at all). #4. The college playoff vs. bowl game argument. #3. Craig Miller’s continued bashing of the university that has given him the opportunity to be where he is today. #2. The rolling of eyes and snickering whenever you chime in to an ongoing college football conversation with anything relating to UNT football. #1. Sam Smith calling North Texas players by the wrong names and proclaiming, “There’s another intercept by the defense!”

Smu Coach Confident Opener Will Be A Sellout
gangrene replied to gangrene's topic in Mean Green Football
Another hope it that the low-price fans will have a great time and want to come back, possibly converting some of them to loyal fans. I doubt many of us would complain much if discounted tickets led to a packed stadium week in and week out. Plus, NCAA attendance stats never include the price of a ticket. If we start averaging 29-30K a year, we might get more interest when conference realignment time comes around again. But, hopefully, we'll get it right once the new stadium opens. I think the worst thing that can happen is for us to continue to win 1-3 games a year and average only 15K in our new stadium... I hope you're right...that would be a great accomplishment. I certainly won't shun the fair-weather fan, but we need a loyal fan base that will support us in the down times too. -
Arkansas RB Green cleared to play I made this post for two reasons: #1. I think it shows the NCAA is open to bending the rules for extenuating circumstances (at least for BCS schools). #2. This is the 2nd or 3rd decision I've seen announced in the last ten days. Hopefully, that means the decision on Stradford is coming very soon. (I know Dodge said he hoped to have an answer today - looks like that's not happening).

SMU coach confident opener will be a sellout "We're going to sell out the first game," Jones said Thursday during a Conference USA media event. "You watch. It's going to be exciting." SMU won't make an official announcement until next week, but Jones dropped hints about an initiative to sell out 32,000-seat Ford Stadium for the Stephen F. Austin season-opener Sept. 5. UNT and RV, I hope you're taking notes. I have no idea exactly what "initiative" SMU has planned, nor if will be successful at completely selling out Ford Stadium, but I'm quite confident it will come close and I'm sure it will include several elements of marketing, advertising and promotions, along with PR. Sit back and watch what an actual marketing campaign can do for ticket sales, even for a 1-11 team. Relying solely on live-game TV and/or radio broadcasts and Brett Vito press coverage will not get us there.

I don't blame him...I didn't particularly like watching them play last year either!

Sounds like the injury-prone label fits to me. What's next, a concussion?
-
Yep, that's exactly what I'm suggesting.

$2500 a month sounds high for Denton, considering we're paying less than that for a board at I-35 and Beltline in Dallas. While I agree, we should at least have an outdoor presence in Denton, I remain adamant in my belief that we are shooting ourselves in the foot by neglecting the greater DFW area. I asked RV about advertising in DFW during his chat last week and he basically dismissed it as too costly. That tells me he knows very little about marketing. Of the traditional media, outdoor, direct mail and local cable can be purchased very efficiently throughout the DFW metroplex...especially right now, with the economy still on a downturn. Internet advertising can be purchased for what amounts to pennies on the dollar when compared to traditional media....and you can more easily target those that have shown an interest in attending football games, outdoor activities, SMU football (as they did with our site last year), etc. I'm talking about a cost-per-thousand of <$5 for a behavioral targeting campaign in the Dallas DMA. I think the most important hurdle (and I have to deal with this all the time) is getting RV to understand that spending money on advertising is going to result in additional revenue for the athletics program. Given the current state of our program (3 wins in two years and an old stadium), it may prove difficult to find a successful balance of promotional marketing and advertising but, I think now is the perfect time to start testing what works and doesn't work so we can have a good strategy in place before the new stadium opens. If we truly we want to be "the team of the DFW metroplex" we have to increase our exposure in the DFW metroplex. You can't build a brand without brand awareness. Many people in DFW may be aware of UNT but many also have misconceptions or dated viewpoints (i.e. commuter school). We have to begin to change those perceptions if we're ever going to build a loyal fan base in DFW. In Vito's story, "The DFW Connection," Villareal stated, “It’s extremely important for us to tap into the Dallas-Fort Worth market,” Villarreal said. “I have always advocated starting at home. We have so many alumni in the area. They could fill a stadium with no problem. We need to be the university [that] people in this area follow, and develop a program that will encourage people to do that.” I agree with everything in his statement. However, we need to market the program to these people. How many of you know UNT alumni that never went to a single football game while they attended the university?? How many times of you heard a student say something like, "I didn't even know we had a football team?" That's just sad, but I've heard a few students say that. Do you think there is a single student at Texas that doesn't know they have a football team? My point is - we need to build AWARENESS of our program on campus, in Denton and in DFW if we hope to ever be relevant in the DFW sports entertainment business. The university recruitment campaign was not bad (in terms of reach) but it had a much different objective than a football campaign would. A football campaign needs only a 2-3 month blitz of advertising (Aug, Sept, Oct and maybe Nov) to be successful. And we don't have to pay an advertising firm lots of money to have a good campaign. We have very good Marketing and Advertising departments, both faculty and students, that would be more than happy to create ideas/campaigns as class projects. We could also utilize the RTVF to produce the spots. And, if nothing good came of those endeavors, we could always hire an advertising/marketing firm. Costs may seem high at first, but the ROI has to be considered when gauging feasibility of any advertising budget. Ok, I'm off my soapbox now. It just a bit discouraging to hear RV's live-chat reply regarding advertising in the DFW metroplex. [Comment From Jeff ] Are there any plans for expanding football advertising into the DFW metroplex? As an advertising professional, I think we are neglecting a key market that could really increase attendance with a bit of advertising and/or pricing promotions to highlight how close Denton is to DFW and the great value that can be had on gameday by families on a budget. 11:30 Rick V: The things we have done in the Dallas market to expand our visibility is securing a 100,000 watt radio station as well as broadcasting local games in the DFW market. I’m assuming that your talking about TV, radio, and billboards. I will tell you that at this point the cost of those medians makes them cost prohibitive for us but a number of schools. However as an advertising professional I would be open to suggestions that you have to help us get the word out. If it's "extremely important to tap into the DFW market," as RV stated, and he plans to do that only by broadcasting games on TV/Radio, then that's just laughable. We can't sell our program solely on the showcasing the current product we have. Even the late Billy Mays would have a hard time doing that. We need to give people more incentive...much more incentive to make the trek to Denton more appealing than the many other entertainment options available in DFW. And...people aren't going to flock to our new stadium just because it's new (see SMU). This isn't A Field of Dreams and "If You Build It, They Will Come" is only a line from a fictitious Hollywood movie. We have to have a good product, good fan experience and brand awareness if we hope to obtain and sustain a loyal fan base in DFW. Fans have to be satisfied with the game day experience and feel they get good value for their entertainment dollar...whatever the price is. As we all know, the Cowboys prices are high, but fans/corporations continue to pay those prices because they feel it is a worthwhile investment of their time and money. Ok, maybe I wasn't off of my soapbox yet...it's just so frustrating sometimes...but I'm done now.

And they have helmet stickers too!!! I'm disappointed that Mayberry didn't qualify too. He gave us an early verbal and stuck by it although I believe he had some other interest (don't recall if he had any other offers). I hope he can take care of business and join us in the future. Gotta love that quality education the DISD gives.

It appears Quoner has been wondering the same thing I have about charlie nt73's unusual style of limiting each line to only about 15 words or so.... Charlie, not trying to pick on you here, but are using some sort of a typewriter (with a bell that dings after 15 words) connected to your PC?? Maybe something that looks like this??

As a passer, he reminds us of current Texas QB Colt McCoy, only Dodge is a better overall athlete and runner. Now, that's a flattering compliment.

I can't say I'm a fan of that "winged" endzone theme either...there's just something very 50's about that look.

Sun Belt Conference Football Magazine
gangrene replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Next up...the Sun Belt Conference TV network!! I must say, this off-season I have enjoyed watching football game re-broadcasts on the Big 10 and Mountain networks (and CBS-college and ESPNU). I even caught myself watching last year's SMU - Tulane game on a weeknight. It was getting late and time for bed, but I was into the game (even though I watched it live). I'd forgotten who won and was debating whether I should stay up even later to see the final score. Then I realized I had my DCTF sitting on the shelf, picked it up and was happy to see SMU lost!! -

Well, I've made a few changes. I'm sure some of you will hate them and some of you may love them. Regardless, I hope there is something to meet everyone's taste. Enjoy!

On DirecTV channel 681 - Second half just started and JQ has 1 catch for 10 yards. He is also playing on the k/o team. It's good to see #81 in a green jersey and on the field again.

Wow! I must say I am surprised to see how low everyone has ranked the WRs, considering they compose more than 1/4 of our starting offense. I definitely agree that the OL has to be the focal point of the offense, but I think Texas Tech has proven that you can be very successful with an average QB. My rankings 1. OL 2. DL 3. WR 4. LB 5. DB 6. QB 7. RB 8. K/P

You mean something like this? Personally, I think it's great for fantasy/game play but I don't think I'd like it too much in reality.

Important Things Rv Mentioned In The Chat

You seem to have a "ball" problem lately....maybe you should get that checked out by a doctor?
