So, who's on the short list?

It's just too depressing for me to talk about UNT football anymore... Did anyone happen to catch the end of the Houston - Tulsa game? Houston was down by ten, but at Tulsa's one-yard line with :40 left in the game. On a third and goal, the right tackle false-started TWICE, when he took a step backwards (saw all the Tulsa players pointing at him), then stood up, slapping his hands together in disgust at his mistake. Upon not hearing any whistles from the refs to stop the play, he got back into position and the QB tossed a touchdown pass with 20 seconds remaining. Now down by just 2 points, Houston went for the two-point conversion but the QB was sacked on the play. Tulsa players and fans erupted in celebration but the ensuing onside kick went to Houston. Two passes later, Houston was in position for a 51-yard field goal attempt to win the game. However, their redshirt freshman kicker was playing in just his 4th game and had a career long of only 34 yards. But...he nailed it and Houston won the game in miraculous fashion.

See UTA football.

We're poor little North Texas, we couldn't afford a guy like June Jones if we wanted. Besides, Dodge is a great guy...maybe we'll be up to 5 wins in year 9.

Guys, I think we're missing the most important factor here - was she hot?? If she was hot, it's allowable and she should have received a nice tip. Otherwise, I can't believe she would have the nerve to wear a UT shirt at the home of UNT watching parties, and on game day no less. I hope you didn't tip that horrible, disgusting waitress.

We Should Expect A Big Win On Saturday, Right?

Is it a coincidence that St. Louis and Detroit play each other this week too? -
Yeah, but he'll have to bring his bring his walker with him (and it won't be because of this ankle/foot injury).

Football: Return Uncertain For Injured Qb Dodge
gangrene replied to mgsteve's topic in Mean Green Football
The anti-Riley speaks again. Dude - seriously, what did Riley do to you? By chance, does your name happen to be Gio? -
Wow, so the history books are all wrong? The battle of the Alamo was really fought over a disagreement about a football game? This board is so enlightening and educating.

Wrong, the only true way to gauge a team's improvement is in the win column and, unfortunately, we're lacking in that category. I agree the team is improved but, at some point, that's got to translate to wins. They don't have bowl games for the most improved 1-11 teams.

One Thing About An Opinion Being Expressed Here
gangrene replied to eulessismore's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, if we're talking about west Texas, we need to consider the target demographic, which is mostly truck drivers. And, in that case, billboards would work best...those with a big "T" and a big "A" are particularly popular with this crowd. For example, the truck stops T/A for Trucks of America and Texas International Truck Stop seem to be fairly successful. Maybe something like "Come tailGatE, parTy and SuppOrt the Mean GrEen" would prove just as successful? -
Quite frankly, I don't really care who the three wins are against. I just picked FIU because they are currently 1-6 and appear to be more beatable than Army. The goal should be to win out, but that's not a realistic expectation. I think this team handled the close losses to Ohio and La-La very well but, unfortunately, I think the loss to FAU sent them over the edge...I know it did it for me. I hope I'm wrong, but you've got to imagine the thought of "here we go again" is going to pop into the heads of every player, coach and fan if we get a lead and let the other team back in it. Tech fans are basically insane. Instead of relishing in the best season they'll ever experience, they believed they should have been playing for the national championship. I just don't think that will ever happen for Texas Tech. When Leach does leave Tech, either voluntarily or by firing, Tech will return to the average team they've always been.

I always suspected we had a few schizophrenics on this board.

We Are Stuck With Todd Dodge As Our Coach, Give It A Rest
gangrene replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
I'd check that 360 comment too...I'm pretty sure you meant a 180...unless you felt this way last year too? -
LOL Old Timer!! I appreciate the hell out of you but that's funny!! We can only hope that other coaches are asking recruits to visit GMG.

No, that's not quite an accurate account of what I said. I said that 3 more wins this season were necessary for me to continue following UNT football to the degree that I have done in the past. I clearly stated that I would continue to provide financial support and that I wish nothing but success for coach Dodge and team. However, for me to continue to have interest in watching UNT football, I expect to start seeing some wins. Otherwise, I will support investigating any and all options that could bring a winnning tradition to UNT football. Tailgating is nice, but victory tastes so much better than any grilled meat.

I'm in this boat too. While I am deeply troubled with a 4-27+ record over three years, I am very concerned about making a change. What coach could we realistically expect to take on the challenge of turning around one of the worst FBS schools for one of the worst FBS salaries? The only change I am 100% positive needs to occur is in the W column. I'm just as afraid of who Dodge's replacement would be as I am of continuing this journey with Dodge.

I'm not sure that was a direct quote from RV since Vito didn't put the comment in quotation marks. While RV has mentioned (several times) that he'll evaluate the program at the end of the season, to me, the (not a lot to like...) comment looks like it was just an observation made by Vito.

You people crack me up...just sit back and take it. Hell, let's give Dodge 10 more years. If we win one more than we did the year before, we should be at 9 wins by year 10. Kram, I don't know how you've made it as a UNT fan as long as you have, but Kudos to you...I just don't have that kind of patience. My "support" is not necessarily dependent on wins and losses; I'll continue to provide financial support UNT. However, my time is entirely dependent on it. I am a college football fan, first and foremost, and I am not going to waste my time watching crappy football when there are so many other options out there. If we were "like the UT's, OUs, etc of the world," Dodge would have never been hired and he sure as hell wouldn't have made it into the third season. (Again, just to clarify, I would love for Dodge to succeed here, but I am not so sure that is a realistic expectation.) If Dodge does eventually turn it around, I'll very gladly admit I was wrong. For every "fair weather fan" like me (who spends way more time than he should being obsessed with UNT football, and often gets laughed at for it) there are likely 1,000 or more alumni/students that are thoroughly disgusted with and no longer follow UNT football as a result of the last 3-4 years. And don't even think about taking any football-knowledgeable friends or family to a UNT game - you'll never hear the end of it, and you certainly won't ever get them to return to a game. With winning comes pride, it's hard to be proud of losing.

LOL, I thought we had to have $9-10 million?? My suggestion was not for the alumni to donate money to pay the salaries of the entire staff (our athletic budget may be small but we do have one), but to contribute to a head coaches salary in the same manner as SMU did. I think we need to be closer to the $1 million mark if we are going to get a coach that's had prior success. Anything less than that and we might as well just keep Dodge.
-
Ok, I've been about as patient as my personality will allow. I still like Dodge (he's a helluva nice guy) and I still really like the potential we have for next year but, damnit, if we don't win these three games, I'm going to have to give up following Mean Green football: Western Kentucky - was blown out by MTSU 62-24 FIU - is 1-6 and was beaten by ASU 27-10 and one of these games needs to be a win: La-Monroe, Army or ASU. I don't care how many HS coaches we have on our staff, how young the team is or who the QB is. I'm sick and tired of hearing excuses and I'm sick and tired of losing. It's way past time to put up or shut up. This is my ultimatum.

This is one of the more ridiculous posts I've read on here in a while.
-
So do we have 1,000 almuni willing to donate $1,000 to pay a new coach $1,000,000 a year? If we have 999 more, you can count me in.

Any, and all, comparisons to SLC stop with the uniform.

From Vito's blog: If it makes you feel any better, Western Kentucky, UNT's rival in the Sun Belt Conference, is still at No. 1. Huh? When the hell did that happen?? Have we really fallen so low that we have to declare a 1st year FCS school as our rival? *Buries face in hands* Maybe it's time to start sharpening that sword.
