Latest Western Kentucky Coaching Rumor?
gangrene replied to TheTastyGreek's topic in Mean Green Football
LOL, and how many "mythical (high school) national titles" does he have? But, most importantly...is he a nice guy? -
UNT was in the news again last night on KTVT, the CBS affiliate. While this news was pretty silly too, it was far less damaging than the HC story. I tried to find the story on KTVT's website, but couldn't. Anyway, some UNT graduate has decided that he'd rather go on a mission to China than get a job and pay for his student loans. So, he had listed his $16,500 student loan on Ebay in hopes that someone would buy it and pay it off. Hmmm....ok. Again, we got laughed at.

Maybe it was because Dodge, being a Port Arthur native, had the most experience playing in the hurricane conditions that we so often encounter in Denton?

I think that's the most frustrating part for me. I didn't have very high expectations for this season (3-4 wins and close games) but, knowing that we could very easily have been a .500 team and witnessing the manner in which we've lost this year, makes it more difficult to stomach. A .500 team with 2-3 more "winnable" games would have given me much more hope for next season and, I feel, done wonders for our 2010 recruiting efforts. I do like Dodge and everything he represents so I'd love nothing more than to see him succeed here. However, I am also of the mindset that if something isn't working, change is a necessary and inevitable occurrence . I really, really hope you're right. I sincerely thank you for sharing your viewpoints and I hope the majority of our team feels the same way Micah does. I'd love to hear anything you'd like to share regarding this team's halftime discussions/adjustments. So you're going to go ahead and make the bold prediction that we'll be in a bowl game next season!! I like it.

I don't know what everyone is complaining about...Dodge has doubled the number of wins we had last season. In any other job, doubling your output in a year's time would be considered phenomenal and a promotion would be in order. Maybe we should follow suit and promote Dodge to Associate AD?

Drc: Vito: Full-fledge Exodus Of Unt Football Bandwagon
gangrene replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
And fans that are always happy with the crap we've seen on the field the last three years are what's wrong with this program. Kram, I admire you're undying positive perspective of UNT football, but come on...calling us bandwagon fans for being upset with failure really pisses me off. Most of us support this program just as much, if not more, than you do. The big difference is we choose not to be content with always pointing to next year and being the laughing stock of college football. Bandwagon fans are those that just start following a program because they are winning (and I'll welcome each and everyone one of them IF we ever get to the point where we're lucky enough to have bandwagon fans) but most of those on GMG do not fall into that category. -
LOLOLOLOL  If you'll go back and read the threads on this forum you'll see that only a very few were even mildly interested in hiring Harbaugh. Opinions ranged from those that thought Harbaugh's early success was attributed to the fact that he coached in a league with no scholarships to those that thought Harbaugh's name would have no value with today's high school recruits. Yet, on the other hand, nearly everyone believed that Dodge would be perfect for UNT. I'm sure Harbaugh would never admit that he was really interested in coaching North Texas...how embarrassing would that be to admit you were passed over for a job you wanted by a high school coach?

Just When You Thought Our College Football Irrelevance
gangrene replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
"We gave up gained a lot of yards, but we won lost the game," coach June Jones Todd Dodge said. "We find a way to win lose games, and that's because of the chemistry and attitude in the locker room." -
When I first heard the Dodge would be the new coach, I had a lot of concerns, but I can honestly say that one thought that never entered my mind was the notion that a Dodge-coached team would not know how to play with a lead. To take a line from ESPN's NFL Countdown show, "Come on, man!!"

U S A Completes Initial Season At 7-0 With 35-0 Win
gangrene replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Woohoo!! Can they join now so we'll have another possible conference win (at least for a couple of seasons)? Wow, where's their bench? Do they even have 22 players on their team? -
DMN Staff picks/college Well, I really can't blame anyone for not picking us to win this week...thanks Brett, for keeping the faith!

2009 Coach Hot Seat Ratings Dodge is about to crack the top 5 list.

Not surprising. Right now, I imagine we'd have a hard time finding people to come to our games, even if we paid them $10 to attend.

Rick Villareal Should Not Be Allowed To Hire Our Next Hc
gangrene replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
Then we have some major misappropriations of funds going on at UNT. I've got an idea, why don't we just dismiss the entire coaching staff and make Riley our player/coach?? That way, we wouldn't have to worry about Riley leaving with his dad and we could save up the money we'd be paying the coaching staff for three or four years so we could hire one of these big names. I read somewhere that Riley wants to be a coach someday anyway, so why not now? For those of you that don't understand tongue-in-cheek humor, I'm joking (there are always a few that take every post seriously). However, to me, that scenario is no more laughable than stating we can't afford to hire a lifetime coordinator or an up-and-coming coach, both of whom were looking for their first FBS HC job. -
Personally, I've never really had a problem feeling the stands. My wife complains about how uncomfortable they are but she's been better since I bought her a cushioned stadium seat.

Rick Villareal Should Not Be Allowed To Hire Our Next Hc
gangrene replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
Right, and that little-known school on I-35, just south of Austin, managed to hire a guy with two national championship appearances and one ring. But, I'm sure they have more money than poor little North Texas. Coker was making about $2 million a year, back 2005...I guess UTSA is paying him $4 million?? -

I'm sooooo sick of hearing how we don't have any money to hire a legitimate college coach I can't stand it. If we can't afford to hire a legitimate FBS football coach, then we might as well just throw in the towel and give up football altogether. I seriously doubt either of those two would have taken the time to fly to Denton and interview for the position if we had ZERO chance at coming to an agreement on compensation. Fisher had the better resume at the time, so I'm sure he would have commanded more money, but Harbaugh was still seeking his first HC job at an FBS school. -

gangrene replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
All of those guys were mentioned as potential candidates and Harbaugh and Fisher did interview with RV so, technically, we did have those coaches to choose from...the problem is that most everyone on this board wanted Dodge. And, since RV reads this board, he gave everyone what they asked for. Hiring a consultant isn't something new. In fact, Memphis just hired Lou Holtz to assist them in finding Tommy West's replacement. -
North Texas: Dodge: Unt Players Still Have Determination

Not exactly the verbiage I would have chosen, but...hmm...ok, whatever floats your boat. -
Why Is Rv Immune From The Firing Line?

And don't think for a second that the TV exposure isn't factored into the cost of the dasher board. -
Why Is Rv Immune From The Firing Line?
gangrene replied to SteaminWillieBeamin's topic in Mean Green Football
Ok, that's a very valid point. However, I'm not sold on that being a reason why we wouldn't make a change at HC. -
Personally, I like this quote better: Hmmm....that sounds eerily familiar.

gangrene replied to SteaminWillieBeamin's topic in Mean Green Football
I, too, have questioned some of RV's personnel decisions. Overall, he has made some great contributions to the UNT athletic department and, for that, I am grateful. However, the face of most college athletic programs is football. UNT is no exception. The blame for allowing DD to run this program into the ground (as many have claimed) and hiring an entire staff of HS football coaches (save one or two) has to fall squarely on the shoulders of RV. Despite his prior success at the high school level, Dodge was about as risky a hire as we could have made. Now, I'm not willing to go as far as to say RV should be fired, but he definitely needs to be held accountable the current state of our football program. I haven't seen anything this season to make me believe this team is going to suddenly wake up and start dominating the SBC...and that's where we need to be.
