A Freshman QB, a TRUE Freshman QB from SLC mind you.

Great. So, now, on a thread about George Dunham's son going to UNT, you had to go and call George an idiot?? Nice, really nice.

Any Advice For The New Orleans Bowl ?
gangrene replied to KAjunRaider's topic in Mean Green Football
Dragos has awesome grilled oysters and Port of Call is a great late night restaurant in the French Quarter. I'd also recommend the Mardi Gras World tour. -

I've read a couple of comments from you about this and I really, really hope it has some validity. I'm planning to ask Santa for this, but I'm afraid he'll just laugh at me and offer me a nice JUCO player instead.

Would you rather we sign an entire class of 1 star recruits or 3 star recruits? I agree that ratings systems, whether they be Rivals, Scout, etc, are not perfect but I have to believe that the odds of finding "superstars" within those touted as 3+ star prospects are far greater than finding them in the pool of prospects that rate as 1 star or below. Every recruit, whether it be at the collegiate or professional level, is a gamble. Think of the past #1 and #2 overall NFL picks that have failed to live up to their expectations: JaMarcus Russell, David Carr, Tim Couch, KiJana Carter, Steve Emtman, Ryan Leaf, Tony Mandarich, etc. Or just view this author's Top Ten NFL all-time busts list. Now, compare those lists to the #1 and #2 picks that did succeed and live up to expectations: Peyton and Eli Manning, Troy Aikman, Bo Jackson, Calvin Johnson, Ronnie Brown, Julius Peppers, Donovan McNabb, Marshall Faulk, etc. I use these NFL examples because #1 or #2 overall picks are about as close to a sure thing as you can get. There's endless game film to review and they've been tested in every possible manner one can imagine, yet they are littered with busts.

Smu's Bowl Bid Creates A Buzz At Sl Carroll
gangrene replied to gangrene's topic in Mean Green Football
Uh oh, the topic nazi has surfaced again! -
SMU's bowl bid creates a buzz at SL Carroll From the article - Since SMU was invited to the Dec. 24 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, freshman quarterback Kyle Padron's phone has been ringing. "Kids from my high school have been calling me to see if they have any scholarships available," he said. "They're sending me their tapes and stuff." Personally, I don't think we ever had a pipeline with SLC but, if we did, it's all but dried up now.

The money that moves college sports A very interesting read and searchable database for all colleges. According to this report, here are UNT's figures:
-
He (Michael Granoff) wasn't really making that claim (that the budget cuts would pay for the raise) and the show's host did state that no state funds or tuition revenue is used to pay the salary of Mack Brown and that Texas football generated $87 million last year. I just rewound the segment on my DVR and Granoff claims, "The major problem today is one of timing. The University of Texas is facing a major budget crisis (insert chuckle/BS claim here)." He goes on to state, "We've (faculty) had layoffs, major curriculum changes and the faculty has been meeting for the last month trying to figure out how to save a few hundred thousand dollars here and there. And I think I've never, in all my years at the University of Texas, heard so much outrage about this decision, from faculty, business people, season ticket holders and some of the most loyal supporters of UT athletics, myself included." He also wants to use the money earned from athletics for academic purposes and states that the current business model for collegiate athletics is not sustainable. He made some very valid points IMO. They also had UT's AD, DeLoss Dodds on to defend his decision and he mentioned that Granoff was a friend and has served on the athletics council and understands the business. A very smug, unfriendly-looking, and almost defiant, Dodds justified Mack's raise by stating that the athletic department has given the university $6.6 million over the last three years and that the football program has gone from generating $20 million, 12 years ago, to $87 million during Mack's tenure at UT. When the host further prodded Dodds as to why the athletics department doesn't give more of its $87 million to the university, Dodds was a bit testy, and said he had just stated that they intended to do so, but would not divulge any details as to how much. Dodds really came across as ass during this interview.

Not everyone at UT is happy with Mack Brown's raise. I was just watching ESPN's Outside the Lines and they had a whole segment devoted to whether or not Mack Brown should be making $5 million a year. A disgruntled UT Accounting professor was on air complaining about how his department is being forced to cut budget and an Iowa senator voiced his displeasure with the amount of money college football coaches are making. Iowa senator, others raise concerns about spiraling coaching salaries The upset professor doesn't sound all that different from what we encountered here during the stadium vote. But the UT student newspaper, the Daily Texan, seems to be more supportive than our counterpart, the NT Daily, as I find no mention of anyone opposed to Mack Brown's raise on their website.

He likes Megan Fox, Victoria's Secret products and shops at the Texas Tech Athletic Department store. I hope he doesn't wear a Texas Tech shirt to class and get labeled a douche!! Looks like a good pickup, but do we really need a kicker? The Kohl's kicking camp has him ranked as the nation's #15 kicker (5 star) and #17 punter ( 4 1/2 stars) and said he had a 73-yard kickoff. They also state he has the ability to hit huge punts but his consistency needed improvement. Keep in mind, these comments were made prior to his senior season. He's a lefty and here's some video of him punting and kicking. I find it odd that I am excited to sign a kicker, but hey...good Mean Green football news is hard to come by these days. Welcome abroad the Mean Green roller coaster Zach!!

Couldn't agree with this post more. It's all about expectations. If you think the fat girl is the only one that will dance with you, and you never ask the pretty ones, then you shouldn't complain when you have to wallow in the slop. -
Considering all the claims that we have no money, I certainly wouldn't make that assumption. A quick check/comparison shows that UNT currently has a football coaching staff of 12 while Texas lists 14, plus two graduate assistants on their football staff directory.
-
And now, for the serious answer, here is the redshirt definition from the official NCAA site. Happy reading.
-
I believe this an official NCAA red shirt. Hell, if it will make everyone feel better, I'll buy one for Thompson.
-
Right, because Todd Dodge is a much better and more proven coach than Mangino. Hell, Mangino isn't even good enough to be our Diet Coke boy.
-
That doesn't surprise me one bit, and it shouldn't surprise RV either. No matter what decision he was going to make, it should have been made the day after our last game. We may not be behind where we were this time last year, but we are certainly behind a lot of other schools in situations similar to ours. Again, I agree that our recruiting suffered by the delay in a formal decision being announced. I hope the coaching staff can make up for lost time because we've got a long way to go. It's just discouraging to see all of these other teams (SMU, in particular) pulling in both quantity and quality recruits while we're still sitting around trying to evaluate our competitiveness.
-
I'm happy with the four known commits we currently have (three are listed here on Rivals), but when I start looking at other schools we should be competing against for these recruits like SMU, Rice, Troy, UTEP and Arkansas State, I get this sick feeling in the pit of my stomach like I just want to vomit. SMU has ELEVEN 3-star recruits (and had most of them already committed before they started winning this season). Tulane's football program is, arguably, in the worst financial position of any FCS school, but Rivals shows that they have 19 commits already, with three of those being 3-stars. Eastern Michigan didn't win a single game this year, but it looks like they have a better start on 2010 recruiting than we do. FIU has six 3-star and 11 overall commits. Likewise, Ball State and Akron, who doesn't even have a coach right now, both look to be doing well. In all fairness, MTSU, FAU, La-La and W. Kentucky all appear to be struggling so....maybe I'm over-reacting??? But, when I read that a start-up program like UTSA reportedly has 19 recruits already committed (Rivals only shows eight), I tend to get just a bit worried. I'm really, really trying to stay positive here. Come on Dodge and staff, let's get out there and win (or steal) some really good recruits. If the schools I've mentioned here, most of which our in a good deal of distress themselves, can do it...then why the hell can't we???
-
Well, that explains a LOT.

My source told me that Dodge would seek an unprecedented second medical redshirt for Riley.
