  1. Reading comprehension is such an underutilized skill on this board. Your #14 was #15 on the 2007 Rivals link I posted - I must assume the disconnect occurred because the list I linked did not include actual numbers beside each recruit. Anyway, I give up . D'Andre Wood is the greatest UNT recruit of this class (maybe even all-time) and everything ever posted on meangreensports.com must be the accepted as 100% factual and accurate, without question. I can certainly agree with that. I was talking with a TTech buddy yesterday about this year's Rivals rankings and we both agreed that Rivals seems to have been more generous with the 2 and 3 stars this year versus the past. And, they have been very quick this year to update a committed prospect's star ranking as soon as said prospect committed to a given school. This was true for several UNT commits within the past week. Vincent Eddie and Steven Ford are two examples - both had zero stars prior to committing. When Eddie de-committed and committed to La-Monroe, he still had zero stars. The next day Eddie had two stars and Ford had three stars. So, I'm left to ponder - is this class, with seemingly more Rivals 3-star prospects, any better than the past two classes, or is Rivals just getting more generous with their rankings?? Or not - these ratings don't mean squat.
  2. I understand the difference between position rankings and prospect rankings, but I'm not naive enough to believe some random, undocumented claim that a 2-10 SBC team just signed the 2007 #15 nationally-ranked athlete in the country without doing a little research to validate that claim. I'm also not convinced that the 36th best prospect in South Carolina could be the 15th best athlete in the nation. Jerrell Preister, 2010 Rivals #17 best prospect in South Carolina, ranked #59 at position "athlete" in the country Conelius Jones, 2010 Rivals #23 best prospect in South Carolina, unranked in position "athlete" in the country David Sims, 2009 Rivals #18 best prospect in South Carolina, ranked #40 in position "athlete" in the country Tyrell Edwards, 2009 Rivals #29 best prospect in South Carolina, ranked #82 in position "athlete" in the country Jaron Brown, 2008 Rivals #16 best prospect in South Carolina, ranked #57 in position "athlete" in the country J.T. Floyd, 2008 Rivals #20 best prospect in South Carolina, unranked in position "athlete" in the country Dontrelle Inman, 2007 Rivals #23 best prospect in South Carolina, unranked in position "athlete" in the country Just for kicks, here's Rivals 2007 rankings of best athletes in the country. Ironically, #15 on that list is a current member of the Mean Green, but it's not D'Andre Wood. But, please, don't take my word for it...do some more research....check Rivals, check Scouts, check ESPN. If you can find any source that shows D'Andre Wood as the #15 ranked athlete in the nation for 2007, I'd love to see it. Again, let me be VERY clear about it, I am not bashing D'Andre Wood or, in any way, trying to undersell his abilities to contribute to this team. In fact, I think he has the potential to be the biggest impact player of this class. However, I'm not buying the inaccuracies on the resume.
  3. Derrick Teegarden - I'm really looking forward to watching him close out the final two minutes of Fouts Field, and then reading the never-ending comments on GMG about how he should be starting.
  4. Anyone else notice Rivals was in the know on this guy before most of us were? I was just re-reading the live chat transcript from today and came across this post (that went unanswered btw):
  5. I'd check the source on that 40 time...probably the same guys that had him ranked the #15 athlete in the nation and 36th best prospect in South Carolina his Junior year of HS. If so, I'd take that time with a grain of salt. Just to clarify, I'm not saying that D'Andre Wood isn't a talented athlete and a good commitment for UNT, but it looks like someone's done some "monkey math" on his accolades.
  6. Brion Carnes committed to Nebraska. However, WKU still had an impressive 2010 recruiting haul, under the new regime.
  7. D'Andre Woods' bio from Mean Green Sports D'Andre Wood – DB – 6-0 – 192 lbs – Charleston, SC (New Mexico Military Institute) Played in eight games in 2009 with NMMI, totaling 18 tackles and three passes defended … Twice selected All-State (2005-06) … Was ranked the 15th best athlete in the nation in 2007 … Rated the 36th best prospect out of South Carolina in 2007 … Was a three-star athlete according to Rivals.com. Anyone know what recruiting service publishes/ranks the "best athlete in the nation" list?? For some reason, that little detail was omitted.
  8. North Texas Mean Green
  9. Whatever the reason, I hope that the past is the past and I look forward to seeing him contribute to the Mean Green in the future. With four BCS school offers last year, it would seem obvious that he has the athletic ability to be a key player. He can check his bags at the door.
  10. It was mostly just a reiteration of the online chat.
  11. Was she an actual "she" before that incident?
  12. A valid argument if you believe 2 years at the D-II level is enough time to adapt and grow into coaching against FBS schools. Also, it would be foolish to consider the 95-06 years to be anything close to resembling coaching at the FBS level. I think 07-09 has proven that statement.
  13. Wow, I never dreamed this thread would turn into the annual off-season WAC-off debate.
  14. Yep, and Tulsa just hired former Lake Travis HS HC, Chad Morris, to be their Co-Offensive Coordinator. The biggest difference between these two hires and ours is that the above coaches will have time to adapt and grow into the college game with an experienced college staff, whereas Todd Dodge was basically thrown into the fire and forced to learn on the fly. Several HS coaches have made successful transitions from HS HC to college position coach and then onto college HC, but few have done so in jumping straight from HS HC to college HC.
  15. Oh, the pain and suffering we fans must endure when following our team. I'm certainly not advocating we join the WAC but come on....everything can't always be perfect. Being a fan requires some sacrifice and, by the way, there's this new thing called the internet that provides almost instantaneous reporting of West Coast and Mountain time zone games. The days of the Sunday newspaper are numbered...I give them about five more years before they go the way of the eight track. TCU played away games at Air Force, BYU, San Diego State and Wyoming. Other than DirecTV dropping carriage of the Versus network, I don't recall it being particularly difficult to follow TCU throughout the 2009 season. Again, I'm not advocating we join the WAC, but we'd be foolish to pass an opportunity to join the MWC because of the reasons you stated. Times change and the immediacy of media coverage is changing even more quickly. I, for one, would be in favor of an agreement similar to the one WKU has contracted with Hawaii.
  16. I'm glad you clarified what sort of object a football is - I would have been really confused otherwise!
  17. Nope, fortunately, we're not on it!! But, perhaps this is a recruiting tool we can use to sway prospects against Texas and Baylor?!?!? 15 Worst College Crime Areas
  18. Which is exactly how 90% of Americans, Texans, DFW residents, UNT alumni feel about UNT football games. Personally, I applaud WKU for their efforts to "reward" their team and fans with a trip to Hawaii to end their season. I'm just curious how they can afford the travel costs for such a trip. We used to bitch and moan about the costs of having to travel to Idaho.
  19. That's pretty much it...you never know what may influence a kid these days. June Jones, for obvious reasons, seemed to be dead-set on playing in the Hawaii Bowl last season. Based on comments in the article, it doesn't appear that WKU's intentions are much different than Jones.
  20. GMG'99 - In nearly every published article concerning Canales' hire, Dodge is quoted as stating that Canales will call the offensive plays, coach QBs and that the QB position is open for competition. I know it's hard to believe, but that's what Dodge is saying. Just read the Q & A on the official website MeanGreenSports: Pull the curtain back a little bit on the hiring process and take us through the three week process of finding a new OC? Dodge: "It's been about three weeks and I did all kinds of research on different kinds of offenses throughout the country. I looked at the different kinds of experience that guys had and as we talked with different guys we found that Mike was absolutely the best fit." "I decided as we went through the search that if I couldn't find what I was looking for, a guy who could come in and coach QB's and be the OC, I would have to go in another direction." MeanGreenSports: Who will call plays next year? Dodge: "He (Mike) will be the play-caller. He's being hired as the coordinator and as I told Mike there are going to be some absolutes that he's already doing and I will simply turn into a guy who will be a resource for him on offense. He will coach the quarterbacks on an everyday basis and that's very important." Or, from the Denton Record Chronicle, Mean Green hires Canales to run offense - All of the starting spots will be open heading into spring practice, including the quarterback spot, Dodge said. Harry - maybe you should pin a thread with the title "Canales to call plays, coach QBs, open QB competition" so all of those that disappeared after the football season will know what's going on when they peek in on GMG every now and then??
  21. Western Kentucky, Hawaii to play in 2012 May this have been a key factor in Brion Carnes decision to join the Hilltoppers?
  22. Yep, looks like he just committed to the Lobos on 1/30. Well, I guess that's better for us than if he had gone to Western Kentucky or FIU.
  23. Here's an interview I found with Mike shortly after he was promoted to OC at USF. BullsVision Exclusive Interview with Mike Canales Also, here's a Q and A from ESPN from last June. Again, the interview is in regards to the USF Bulls, but I think it offers a lot of insight into Canales' offensive mindset. I liked this Q & A, in particular: It seemed like Matt had a great spring, which you'd expect from a four-year starter. But even with a new offense, he looked comfortable. Did he do everything you wanted this spring? MC: Yeah, he really took to it. We spent a lot of time in quarterback school, just really dissecting defenses and understanding schemes and why things worked the way they did. One thing I was really pleased with was that he came away with only one interception in a team scrimmage situation when we were going against the defense. And I think that was the biggest thing, just understanding the checkdowns and getting the ball to your backs. Don't try to force it and make a big play. Take what's there and understand that your second hitch outlet is as good as anything. If you want to increase your (completion) percentage from last year to this year, go to your backs and that will increase your percentage by six percent. Don't be afraid to drop the ball off. It's not always about making the big play; it's about making the right play.

  24. Posting mobile links to the forum = not good, but I'll give you a +1 for the effort. In addition, I'll post another link to an NBC story, with reader comments. Canales: From Bulls' Green to Mean Green In response to the reader comment - Hell yes, we're willing to accept "mediocracy" and winning 6 games in a year!!! Have you seen our record?? We haven't won 6 games in the last three years. Obviously, Canales fell out of favor with some, if not many, of the USF fans.
  25. This is a guy I wish Canales would immediately call: Tarean Austin He's interested in two Sunbelt schools and he's open to leaving the state of Florida, since he appears to be leaning to Western Kentucky.
