  1. We really got hosed on the TV coverage this year. Even the final game is just getting coverage on ESPN360. I thought the final was broadcast on ESPN2 in past years? For those going to Hot Springs, I highly recommend the historic Arlington hotel. It's old but it's got a lot of charm to it. We were fortunate enough to stay in the Smarty Jones suite last October, but I'm sure that will already be booked. Still, the standard rooms are fine (they have a French Quarter "feel" to me) and they may even have a few Parlor suites still available.
  2. Looks like a good hire and a much improved coaching staff for 2010.
  3. That is true, but Vito's blog title said "UNT to name wide receivers coach tomorrow." That implies an announcement. Oh well, as long as we have someone in place by the time spring practice starts, I guess there's really no urgency. I still don't know exactly when spring practice is scheduled to start and can find nothing on the official website about it. I saw that Texas started on Friday and got plenty of local (DFW) news coverage about it.
  4. Do you think? I just figured she wanted to meet at a bar at 10AM because she was a raging alcoholic.
  5. I guess he meant next Saturday??
  6. Wasn't that the last day the board statistics were actually updated?
  7. Do they both use Rivals or does one use Phil Steele and the other use Max Emfinger??
  8. It's all in the punctuation, which I ended with a question mark. Besides the "answer" was one of those "our sources say" and I'd hardly consider that definitive. I hope Gandy stays. My point in making the post was just informational and I was actually happy that one of our coaches is being considered for decent (IMHO) position. I'll be happier if he does, indeed, decline the position to stay at North Texas.
  9. Looks promising - I like the fact that he was responsible for recruiting at least half of DFW (west of I-35) and Oklahoma. Without looking it up, I seem to recall several CSU signees from DFW the last couple of years. And, his experience as OC and recruiting coordinator certainly don't count against him.
  10. From footballscoop.com: LA Tech: We hear Sonny Dykes talked with North Texas running backs coach Shelton Gandy about the running backs job at LA Tech, but our sources tell us Gandy plans to stay at North Texas. It's nice to see one of our coaches being considered for a legitimate FBS position (rather than HS) for a change. *****Sorry, I posted too soon - I see this was already mentioned in another thread.*****
  11. Assistant Coach Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree and two (2) years experience combined coaching at the NFL, NCAA, or high school level required. Preferred Qualifications - Masters degree preferred; three years experience, ideally at Intercollegiate Division I level. I guess the position hasn't been posted for 17 days yet?? At any rate, I'd assume we'll have hired someone before spring practice starts. Anyone know exactly when that may be?

  12. RB Ford dismissed from USF I don't usually post about our possibilities of getting dismissed players from BCS programs but, since we now have his former coach... Anyway, he's a Junior and has had multiple issues at USF. I don't think he ever redshirted at USF, so I guess it's possible he could transfer here, use his redshirt, and still have one year of eligibility. He was a Rivals 4-star prospect out of HS.
  13. Someone else will have to offer more insight as to the grand vision of the Super Pit, but I recall watching a few rounds of the NCAA Final Four there as a kid. It was a pretty big deal (as it is today) to host a few rounds of the tourney. It was sometime in the late 70s, I believe. Keep in mind, we didn't have to compete with the Mavericks back then for basketball events and the concept of playing basketball in football stadiums (Texas Stadium) was non-existent.
  14. Green Gang: Gllispie And Jones Go In Two Different Directions Wow, I think he's a bit drunk on the green punch. I'm not a Gillispie fan, and certainly not an Aggie fan, but I don't know why he found it necessary to slam Gillispie for taking the Kentucky job. "Money, Power, Prestige?" No, maybe it was just that he wanted to coach at a "basketball school" with a rich tradition and felt he was up for the challenge of "big-time" college basketball? And, he's sorely mistaken if he thinks Johnny Jones would kindly decline the opportunity to be the head coach at LSU, or any other SEC, Big 12, Big 10, PAC 10, Big East school to remain at UNT.
  15. What is LJ's agenda? Where do his loyalties lie? UNT or the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Dallas, the Southern Sector Development Initiative, the Dallas Citizens Council and the Dallas Education Foundation? I'd say most of his decisions regarding UNT are directly tied to his place on the Dallas Chamber's Board of Directors and, arguably, benefit them far more than they benefit UNT.
  16. No worries - I wasn't suggesting that it was an old topic and I apologize if I made it seem that way. DCTF's winter edition will probably be on the shelf for some time still. Because of my job, I get my copy the day before it actually hits the shelves. I was being more critical of DCTF's winter edition, than I was of your post. IMO, the winter edition leaves much to be desired and is a far cry from what I've come to expect of DCTF.
  17. Yep, I got a complimentary copy back in January. It hit the shelves about two weeks before national signing day. This is just the second year of publication for the DCTF winter edition and I'm not sure how much longer it will last. They had two versions ready to go this year - the one that printed and an alternate version that would have been a special commemorative issue, devoted primarily to Texas Longhorn coverage, had UT been victorious in the national championship game. It's a fraction of the size of the fall issue and the information is already dated as soon as it's printed. For example, it shows Javia Hall committed to North Texas - we all know how that turned out. I think it would make more sense for them to hold off until after signing day, but I guess they prefer to wait until the fall issue to provide more in-depth analysis of each school's signing class. Aside from the above comments, I guess it provides a decent enough recap of the season. Personally, and this is not a knock on Vito (he authors most of the DCTF coverage on UNT), I'd love to see a different perspective on UNT football every now and then. For that reason, I found the ESPN article by Graham Watson interesting.
  18. It looks like Mike Schultz is in the running for MTSU's open OC job. There's a bit of irony in that Schultz previously interviewed for the La Tech WR coach position under Tony Franklin, MTSU's former OC. According to footballscoop: Middle Tennessee State: Rivals' Tom Dienhart reports Rick Stockstill talked with former TCU and Illinois offensive coordinator Mike Schultz.
  19. Yeah, because these lists NEVER include the guy we actually hire. Who's On Your Oc Short List?
  20. Here are just a few quick names I have. Before anyone comments that any of these guys are out of our league, remember Canales appeared that way too. Mike Schultz – currently unemployed - former OC at Illinois (2009) and TCU He recently interviewed at Louisiana Tech for the WR Coach position. Also coached at Sam Houston State, SW Texas State, New Mexico, UTEP and Kansas State. Clarence James – currently on Tulsa staff as Outside WR Coach and Director of Recruiting – has strong ties to the DFW area, having coached at Allen HS, SMU and UNT in the past. He's also coached at Kansas, Texas Tech, OU and Texas. Gerad Parker – currently on UT-Martin's staff as Recruiting Coordinator, Passing Game Coordinator and WR Coach – was a finalist for Kentucky's WR Coach position that Tee Martin got. No ties to the DFW metroplex that I could find but is a young, talented coach on the rise IMO. Shannon Dawson - currently on Stephen F. Austin's staff as OC and QB coach. I'll add a few more later.
  21. Cole originally committed to Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State is where Dexter Manley played college football for four years. Dexter Manley was illiterate. In 2002, Dexter Manley was selected as one of the 70 greatest Washington Redskins of all time. Draw your own conclusions. It just sickens me when a very talented kid can't get his act together to play college ball. Several years back, I had a flag football receiver with multiple BCS offers but he couldn't get his ACT/SAT scores high enough to even enroll at a JUCO. Another one was a starting LB for Texas A & M his Sophomore season, then got mixed up with the wrong crowd, lost his scholly and is now working at Pizza Hut. What a waste.
  22. Yes, he has. From his bio - Prior to his stint in the NFL, Kragthorpe spent four years (1997-00) as an assistant coach at Texas A&M, including the final three seasons as offensive coordinator. He also coached the wide receivers from 1997-99, before becoming the quarterback coach for the 2000 season. The rumor is that Kragthorpe is interviewing for the WR coach, so he'd be taking a trip in the time machine back to 1997.
  23. News Flash: A&M eyes Kragthorpe Middle Tennessee State offensive coordinator Tony Franklin is expected to take the same position at Louisiana Tech. Franklin would join the staff of new Bulldogs coach Sonny Dykes. Franklin's attack ranked No. 3 in the Sun Belt last season during the Blue Raiders' run to a 10-3 season, capped by a win over Southern Miss in the New Orleans Bowl.
  24. When was the last time UNT did not sign at least one player in the DMN Area Top 100, while Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana-Lafayette DID?? Answer: 2010 Louisiana-Lafayette - according to today's DMN got Aaron Spikes, RB from Pinkston and #75 DFW area prospect, to switch his commitment from Texas Tech at the last minute. Spikes also had offers from Kansas State, LaTech, SMU, TCU and Utah. Rivals doesn't show an offer from TTech, so I wonder if they pulled it? His remaining offers were impressive nonetheless. Louisiana-Monroe - according to today's DMN got Josh Allen, OL from Cedar Hill and #55 DFW area prospect, to switch his commitment from Minnesota. Rivals doesn't show that he had any other offers. Louisiana-Monroe also got LOIs from area players Demierre Burkett, OL West Mesquite, Vincent Eddie, DB Desoto, Darius Lively, DL Lancaster and Luke Russell, WR Denton Guyer. Louisiana Tech - according to today's DMN got Antonio Burton, DB from Denton Guyer and #91 DFW area prospect, to switch his commitment from Kansas. As with Spikes, Rivals doesn't show that this prospect had an offer from the school he de-committed from. However, like Spikes, he still had some good offers (Arizona, Tulsa and UTEP). LaTech also got LOIs from area players Anthony Garner, LB South Oak Cliff, Kendall Hayes, DB Lancaster and Carter Street, DE Pilot Point. Also, the DMN published their DFW Top 50 list for 2011. Unfortunately, we're not currently being considered by any of these players and, unfortunately SMU is being considered by 12 of the 50. But, speaking of SMU, I did take some personal satisfaction in seeing that 2010 DFW area Top 100 Don Canyon, QB (#93) Lincoln, de-committed from SMU to go to Northwestern State. The good news is that national signing day 2011 is a LONG time away. If we can somehow manage a winning record in 2010, coupled with the opening of the new stadium, recruiting could really improve.
