  1. Don't get me wrong, I'm optimistic about Rawlinson, it's just a little difficult to get excited about someone who won't be in a Mean Green uniform for at least three years. I hope his mission takes him to places with good food. I'd hate to see our big OL recruit turn into a TE. When's the last time we had a player on the "all-world" team? All-World team 2010
  2. It doesn't appear his offer cup was over-flowing. I wonder why BYU wasn't interested enough to offer a scholarship?
  3. Catching up with UNT's last two players to commit - Mean Green Blog (Brett Vito) Interesting story - it looks like it will be several years before Rawlinson actually makes it to Denton.
  4. You are correct, Brian Rawlinson it is.
  5. Good luck Sam. Get your degree and best wishes in whatever endeavor you choose to pursue.
  6. Matt Floyd became the second 2011 QB prospect with a UNT offer to commit to South Florida (Stephen Weatherford was the other). I guess Floyd is not afraid of a little competition. However with offers from FAU, FIU and Troy, it could have been worse. At least with Floyd at USF we don't have to worry about facing him in a conference game. To think optimistically, maybe whoever is relegated to bench duty (if they both actually commit to USF) will reconsider and find his way to UNT?? Then again, maybe not.
  7. I know that this is a question that has been answered before and many of us would like confirmation that answer has not changed. However, I see zero benefit in publicly acknowledging that a 7-win ultimatum exists.
  8. It's very evident the coaching staff shares that concern. We have 19 prospects listed in the QB position thread and, of those, there have been seven known offers to QBs in the 2011 class, but several have already committed elsewhere. 9. footballscoop.com Could they be any more vague?
  10. Since there will be many members that are new to this forum, I'd like to quickly review the rules for posting in the recruiting forum. Nobody likes to get bogged down in a bunch of rules but these are fairly simple and necessary to keep the recruiting information as easily accessible as possible. #1. Please don't post comments about a prospect in the position, offer or commitment threads that are pinned. The idea is to keep these pinned threads as clutter-free as possible so that it remains fairly easy to find information about prospects. If you'd like to comment about a particular player that is listed in a pinned topic, you should create a new topic for your comments or questions. #2. Please do post any new information about a new prospect in the appropriate position thread (and offer thread, as applicable) following the same format as the other posts. I.e. player's name (linked to Rivals/Scout/ESPN profile, if available), position, height/weight/40 time, current school/home town, schools player is interested in, offers listed separately and then any statistics or accolades you may have found for the prospect. Please post any video on a player as a new topic in a non-pinned thread. Also, if this is too much trouble or you prefer to remain anonymous, feel free to PM me regarding any prospects. If you have additional information about a prospect that's already been posted, you can also PM that to me and I will make a revision to the existing post, giving you credit for the new information. #3. Please think before you post. Keep in mind, this forum is open to all "members" of GoMeanGreen.com, regardless of the member's school of affiliation. We also have many members that are relatives of current/former players so don't post anything about someone you wouldn't say to them in a face-to-face conversation. In addition, it's not inconceivable that the players being recruited may join GMG.com and read any relative posts so, again, please keep that in mind when commenting about a particular player's abilities or lack thereof and limit those negative comments to factual information on a player's athletic or academic abilities. Please no comments about prospect's girlfriends or anything else that may be construed as inappropriate. The last thing we want to do by making this recruiting forum more public is to scare off potential recruits by posting negative comments about them. Acceptable comments would be, "That player looks too small for a LB or a 4.8 40 seems slow for CB." Unacceptable comments would be, "That DT sure is ugly or he cheated in class all the time (unless that evidence has been documented). Thanks in advance for your support and input, and a big welcome to all members who are new to the recruiting forum. ***Edit. #1 and #2 were posted prior to the implementation of the recruiting blog and are no longer valid under the new format. Please feel free to start a new thread about any player not already listed on the position profiles or to discuss any prospect. You can also PM Old Timer, Harry or myself if you have new information that is not already published in the blogs. Thanks***
  11. Yes, if he is interested in coming to UNT, I'd definitely be in favor of giving him a second chance. However, it's very doubtful he'd consider UNT, even in his current situation. D.J. Jones was the workhorse in the Denison HS football team in 2008 and 2009. He rushed for over 5,000 yards in 2 1/2 seasons and added an additional 600 yards receiving for a combined 75 TDs. If I recall correctly, he also had several punt and/or kick-off returns for TDs. He was rated 4 stars/5.8, ranked #27 RB in the nation and 48 best player in Texas by Rivals. In addition to his offer by A&M, he had offers from Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, Kansas, SMU and Texas Tech. I really wish we could have signed his backfield companion, Denison HS QB Jordan Taylor, last year, but he signed with Rice. Taylor would have given us leverage for Jones. I think it's funny how someone inevitably poses the question about every transfer and/or player that is kicked off a team in the fashion of would/should we accept this player - and no offense to you Marty - it's a legitimate question. I just think we're delusional to think we're in a position to turn away 4-star prospects because of misdemeanors and/or character flaws. We should be so lucky to have D.J. Jones want to come to UNT. Unless a kid has committed a felony, has a history of severe substance abuse and/or has serious personality flaws, I don't think there's any question that UNT should welcome any 5, 4, or even 3-star football prospects with open arms. Remember, these are 17 and 18 year old kids. They're going to make mistakes. We all have. God knows I've made my share. I just thank Him that none of my mistakes were too severe. My parents went to Denison HS so I pay a good deal of attention to their football team. I saw D. J. play a few times and he is an awesome athlete. I can't speak to his character because I didn't follow the team closely enough to know all those details but he did seem to get along well with his team mates and coaches.
  12. Who are these people that watch FCS football and think it's FBS??? After Jethro takes the family for a drive, they plan to go for a swim in the cement pond and watch some Texas State FBS playoff football on the picture box.
  13. I feel the same way. It was so silly I couldn't even get through the first couple of paragraphs.
  14. Hmm...that mindset/sense of entitlement, especially as it relates to the expectations of governmental financial support, coupled with a lack of understanding fundamental economic rules, seems awfully familiar to me. On a side note, I saw that shunned 2010 SMU recruit, Jeremy Hall, will be attending UTSA on a scholarship and will be playing football and baseball for the Roadrunners.
  15. Based on my own experiences and those that I've read here, I really think the above statement is the key point. I believe the UNT alumni/fanbase truly is a sleeping giant. So many of those associated with UNT are just searching for reasons to shout out their allegiance, but are afraid or embarrassed to do so. Many of us will say it's foolish to be afraid or embarrassed to show a public display of affection for UNT, but it's the cold, hard fact of the matter. Unless you're truly associated with another identity (Duke - basketball, Harvard - education, etc), if you're wearing university attire that is not sport-specific, the majority of people are going to think of the football team first and foremost - that's especially true in Texas. And, for most people, losing is embarrassing. If we could trade records with Texas Tech, for example (both W-L and quality of victories), over the last 3-4 years, I think you'd see a lot more people going green. After all, you do play to win the game. For now, we'll have to be satisfied with Skulls-like, head-nodding acknowledgments, quiet words of encouragement and secret handshakes as endorsements when we wear our Mean Green gear outside the safety of our own homes.
  16. I actually had a couple of guy's try to steal my UNT SOW hat at the St. Patrick's Day Parade on Greenville Ave. this year! I've never had any negative comments about my UNT attire but I've had to endure many snickers, rolling eyes and apologies during football season when asked the question, "Where did you go to school?" Over the last several years, I too have noticed quite a few more people wearing UNT apparel outside of Denton, while shopping, etc - outside of the normal parameters you'd expect to see UNT gear. On a side note, I receive far more questions when I wear my Wrigley Field t-shirt than I ever get when I wear UNT stuff. Usually, it's an excited, "Are you from Chicago?" And a subsequent look of disappointment when I tell them no. I never knew we had so many Chicagoans in the area.
  17. Preaching to the choir on the marketing in Dallas area comment. I am continuously amazed at how little brand awareness we have in our own backyard. I recall a trip to Hong Kong several years ago (about 5 or 6) in which an older couple noticed the green "North Texas" shirt I was wearing, while waiting in the security line. The woman initiated a conversation and asked what my flight destination was. When I told her it was San Francisco, she replied, "Oh, so you're not from the North Texas area?" She was from Richardson and thought my green North Texas shirt was referencing the DFW metroplex, rather than the University of North Texas. Now, I'll give her the benefit of a doubt, since the shirt I was wearing came from Steve and Barry's and, aside from the color and words "North Texas" had no other reference to UNT, but I highly doubt she would have made a similar assumption had I been wearing a burnt orange shirt with "Texas" on it. I'm happy to see that we're involved with the Taste of Dallas this year, especially since TCU and SMU will have a presence there.
  18. I find it very difficult to believe that this would be a big enough issue to June Jones that he would start contemplating his future at SMU, much less quit over this mess. What happened and the way it happened wasn't ideal and it really sucks for the kids to find out when they did. However, it's not all that different from what June Jones did to Julian Herron and a few others during his house cleaning a while back. I don't want to take anything away from Hall or Parker, but neither was considered a top national recruit (Hall was a Rivals 3-star and Parker was un-rated). Had this happened to a 5-star or even 4-star prospect, I think that would be a different story. But, I think SMU's past has proven that they'll "Pony Up" for the 4 and 5-star kids.
  19. Todd Dodge's relationship with Brenham HS HC, Glen West, is (or at least it was) so good that West was asked to join the Mean Green staff. But, that was back in 2007. Brenham HS always has quality FBS prospects and I had hoped that a few of them would be more interested in North Texas because of Dodge's friendship with West. That hasn't really been the case. I don't know if that is a result of Coach West having little, to no, influence on where his players play college ball or if UNT is just that unappealing to the Brenham HS players with legitimate D-1 talent. And, what's worse is that we're not even being considered by these Brenham HS prospects. Still, if Dodge has interest in Jeremy Hall, I suspect he and West have already spoken about the possibilities.
  20. If the players and the staff have a mutual interest, arrangements (within NCAA regs, of course) can be made to accommodate all parties. If North Texas isn't accommodating, another university will be.
  21. This poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.1%.
  22. Ok, this poll has been open for nearly a week now. I think it's safe to say that this is a somewhat sensitive issue for a few folks. However, more than 75% of those that voted are in favor of beer sales at the public concession areas. With that many supporting the suggestion, I think we could find a happy medium for those that are opposed. No second-half sales, non-drinking sections and text-reporting of bad behavior are but a few of the options to appease the nay-sayers. I seriously doubt general public beer sales at Fouts Field is a proposition that is even under consideration by the administration but, it looks like the decision would be welcomed by most of the Mean Green nation. So what if the sample size is small? Nielsen utilizes a similar tactic and it's widely accepted.
  23. I'd gladly welcome these two to the Mean Green.
  24. Mustang fans are not too happy about this news. Some are even speculating this will cause June Jones to ponder his future at SMU.
