Well then I wish it would happen to a young, pretty and vacant UNT alumn who also happened to be a Mean Green football fan. So, that's it? That's what the commercial is supposed to represent; a young gold digger who married a rich Texan on his deathbed? Hmmm...still not something I find particularly funny, but maybe it's just me.

I'm sorry, but I just don't get it. What's with the old man? He looks and acts like he's about to die. I'm guessing the old, rich guy with his young wife is supposed to somehow resemble Anna Nicole Smith's life? Bad, stereotypical Texas accent and stupid "Troy Barkman" dog name aside, it's just not funny.

Utsa's Larry Coker Says Utsa Football Is Raring To Go

I'm in agreement with that statement too but, I'd say the following statement from Coker is another sign that he's certifiably delusional. -
Utsa's Larry Coker Says Utsa Football Is Raring To Go
gangrene posted a topic in Mean Green Football
UTSA's Larry Coker says UTSA football is raring to go Really Larry?? Are you actually hearing what you're saying?? Do you actually believe that B.S. you're pitching?? No. I didn't think so...I doubt anyone that really matters will believe it either. -
I think Troy will be a fine deep snapper and I believe Dunham will be redshirted this season.

That's what I see as well. Six that are uncommitted and interested in UNT. Each of those are listed within this forum in the position profile threads, as well as the 2011 offers thread. There are also numerous others on that list that have UNT offers but have already given verbal commitments to other schools. Then there's #54, WR Quentin Gardner, from Denton Guyer, who has previously shown interest in UNT but, reportedly never received an offer from UNT and no longer lists UNT as a school he's interested in attending. With the new stadium opening for the start of the 2011 season, it really is a bit disappointing we're not being considered by more of the area's top 100 prospects. Additionally, it's a bit frustrating that we have six of the Top 100 interested in UNT, while SMU has six that have actually committed to them.

You're right, we need more fans like you. Fans that constantly complain and bash the program and play it off as "expecting more". That's productive and condusive to a winning program. I give.

So, you've named one coach out of how many teams and over how many years? And I don't think he's even a great example. How many winning seasons did Turner Gil have at Buffalo? One. He was 2-7 in year one, 5-6 in year two, 8-6 in year three and back to 5-7 in his last year at Buffalo. But, to answer your question, yes, it's fair for us expect the same thing...just not too realistic. If you think the standard expectation for a new coach (taking over a losing program) is a winning record in the second season, how many coaches should we expect to go through before we can find one that can accomplish that? Even the "great" Mack Brown couldn't turn Tulane or North Carolina into winning programs in less than 4 years. Steve Kragthorpe, a popular name on this board, won his second year at Tulsa, but couldn't repeat that success at Louisville. And the list goes on, for every coach that won in year two, there are four times as many that didn't. Expect all you want, just be prepared to be disappointed and in a state of constant change. And that's the real issue now isn't it? The simple fact that a 5-31 coach is back for year four tells everyone all they need to know about North Texas football (even with that added emphasis of a 7-win ultimatum). Which has more value to a HS recruit; a shiny, new stadium or a coach that will actually be around to coach your first college football game? Which is easier to sell a HS recruit; the idea that Dodge will suddenly turn a 2-10 team into a 7-5 team or the idea that the 2010 season will be his last at UNT? Ah, I just love discussing who our next coach will be before we've even played a single game this season, much less made that coaching vacancy a reality. Maybe someone should start a countdown timer to count down the days until Dodge gets the boot? That would be a nice, positive start to the football season. I'm sure all the recruits, players, coaches and their family and friends (and, yes, many of them do read this board) would love to see that written here.

I think you totally missed my point. If seven wins is the ultimatum, fine...but why make it public? Why is a high school, or even a JUCO, kid going to commit to a coach with such a grim-looking future? He's not, and they haven't. Why delay the inevitable and set the program back another year of recruiting? Read between the lines here because I'm not going to spell it out any more clearly for you. Oh, and good luck in trying to duplicate the feat that was accomplished at "the school down the road" at UNT. Last time I checked, we didn't have $2 million to pay a Head Coach. How many coaches have had winning records in their second year at a program that averaged 2 wins (and countless blowout losses) over the previous 5-year span? Without doing any research, I'd say less than 5. And, since you're into comparisons, when was the last time any university publicly announced their HC had to win X number of games or he was fired? Given our circumstances, that's recruiting suicide. As I said in the previous post we all want to win. Then again, maybe I'll win the lottery tomorrow (and without even buying a ticket).

As of today, we have four verbal commitments and no, none of them are on this particular list. While there are several prospects that had UNT offers and committed elsewhere, there are still several with UNT interest and/or offers that have yet to commit. #84 Ben Goodman #94 Brandon Mickens #116 Stephon Sanders #119 David Cobb #120 Kyle Stouffer #126 Melvin Spears #147 Rees Odhiambo #157 Mitch Manley #195 Lovett Gibson

I still fail to see how making this ultimatum public knowledge benefits anyone involved with North Texas football. Knowing that the 2010 team must win two more games than Dodge has won in his entire career as an FBS head coach does more harm for recruiting than it helps. We all want to win and we all expect to win, but let me remind everyone that we've won 7+ games only three times since we returned to D-1/FBS football in 1995. I'd love to go undefeated this season, but I realize that's not a realistic goal. Given our 2010 schedule, is seven wins a realistic expectation for this season? Maybe. Given our 5-31 record and large margin of loss over the last three years...maybe not. Should seven wins be the only acceptable measurement of success for 2010? I don't know, but I think that's something that should have been kept between Coach Dodge and RV and left for the fans, recruits and opposing coaches to merely speculate upon. Instead, it's become virtually indisputable public knowledge that is severely hampering recruiting efforts and will put any new coaching staff, if that's what the future holds, at an even bigger disadvantage. No matter how you feel about Dodge, if you're a Mean Green fan, you better hope and pray we get off to strong start in the 2010 season. Otherwise, I fear we'll be waiting another 3-4 years to see positive results from the next rebuilding campaign.

Disappointing...we could have used this scholarship a few weeks ago when a couple of good prospects for the school down the road unexpectedly became available.
-
Well, you can't blame June Jones for picking himself either because he's not on the poll. However, there is one very familiar name there. Perhaps if we start of the season 1-0, we'll have at least one top 25 vote for UNT?
-
What's "far" practice? Is the team being bussed to some remote location to practice in secrecy?
-
Hmmm....I've got a couple of games in mind, but I think I'll just keep those to myself. I'm going to honor RV's request to be upbeat and positive and stop beating ourselves up over the results of the last few years.

Thank you Harry and KRAM1. Sorry I couldn't respond sooner. I was on a business trip in Denver for the last two days.

Great interview. A big thanks to Harry, Evan and RV.

Grant Peterson, a Scout two-star QB/WR prospect (6'5", 215 lbs, 4.8 40) from Austin Westwood HS has committed to Rice. Scout shows him to have offers from only Rice and North Texas while Rivals reports he was only offered by Rice. ***Rivals has now updated Peterson's profile to include his UNT offer*** At any rate, Peterson becomes the fourth prospect with UNT interest (3rd with a UNT offer) to commit to Rice. That's Rice 4, North Texas 0 (6-0 if you count the 2010 kids, Zach Patt and Jordan Taylor both chose Rice offers over UNT). How big is that game on 9/11???

For all of those complaining about the memories of a posible stadium-opening loss, do you remember the opening game at Fouts? Or how about the Cowboys, Rangers, Mavs or Stars first game in their new stadium/arena? Sorry, I don't remember any of them and I really don't think the stadium-opening opponent is that big of a deal past the 2011 season. We're a REALLY hard group to please. For years, we've asked to schedule more home games against regional opponents and argued that the home-field advantage would allow for a greater possibility for an upset. Now that we finally get what many of us have been seeking, all we want to do is complain? Maybe DD was right...we're all just a bunch of m-f'ers!!!
