  1. Which old WAC are you talking about? To my knowledge we've never been invited to, nor declined, a WAC that contained the initial MWC members (Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming). Since it's inception, the MWC has been a much stronger conference than the WAC.
  2. Well, for starters, Freebirds could "show pride in the local school" by bartering just $1500-$2000 in product and becoming one of the University of North Texas Athletic Department's official Restaurant Partners. Hopefully, this option was communicated to Freebirds when they inquired about using the logo. Not exactly. You don't just give away your trademarked logo for free. If you did, the other paying sponsors would have less reason to contribute. I agree we most definitely need more exposure and the published sponsorship packages don't offer much in return compared to most of the ones I've evaluated. I've always argued that the UNT Marketing Department, and Athletics in particular, is severely lacking in many aspects.
  3. I was wondering the same thing. I'm no accountant, but doesn't $500K equal "half a million" and "slightly past half a million" should be quantified somewhere in the neighborhood of $50,000 - that's not much of an incentive.
  4. Nineteen no votes...funny **shakes head**
  5. Good find, and definitely worth a phone call. I agree that he probably shouldn't hold his breath for another SEC offer, but I'd hate to see La-Mo get him. We should definitely get consideration with his other offers. Maybe RV can add Kentucky to the future schedule?
  6. No where did I say that we shouldn't target highly rated recruits, but I choose to live in reality. The reality is the kid has 18 offers, most from AQ FBS schools. He lives in Maryland and doesn't list a single Texas school on his consideration list. If you want to waste your time knocking on closed doors, by all means, please do so. Most people learned from Dodge's inability to recruit top talent from SLC that it takes much more than a coach/player relationship to recruit a kid to North Texas. Mike Canales recruited several prospects from Florida but we weren't in serious consideration for any of them. Now, having said all of that, I'll stick by my original statement that I'd love to see him come to UNT.
  7. I'd love it, but no way he comes here.
  8. The fact is Texas is rich in football talent. No one disputes that fact. Most of the top 25 programs have numerous players from Texas on their roster, many of them starting. The question is not if McCarney can recruit Texas, it's if McCarney can recruit athletes from Texas, or any other state, to North Texas - two totally different things.
  9. What were Iowa State's records those two seasons?
  10. I kept rereading those same sentences myself. I'm still debating as to which is the saddest fact of these three: Most accomplished coach UNT has hired since Hayden Fry in the 1970s. He had a 56-85 record. He was the program's winningest head coach (with that 56-85 record).

  12. Awesome, just awesome.
  13. That was when we thought we were going to get ummm....well, let's just say....someone other than McCarney.
  14. I'm impressed. Canales gets my vote over McCarney. There are still about three guys I'd prefer over Canales, but McCarney isn't one of them.
  15. Apparently, some at Texas State think they have a legitimate shot at Phil Fulmer
  16. Future Conference Possibilites For those of you suggesting the SBC should go after La Tech, this thread may help explain why that's not a likely scenario. Even with the WAC facing a future full of uncertainty, the La Tech fan base would rather fantasize about CUSA invites and contemplate going independent than consider joining the SBC.
  17. Happy Thanksgiving and +1 to KDL for the festive fall colors.
  18. McCarney to North Texas?
  19. Andrew Power is a top TE JUCO prospect. He had committed to Tennessee but recently de-committed. I'm guessing they pulled their offer but I don't have confirmation or specifics as to why.
  20. I'll give you the 6-6 vs. Iowa - that's good. But outside of the 2000 season, the rest of those OOC wins are pretty unimpressive for a Big XII school. No baggage? I guess domestic abuse is no big deal? I'm sure the Battered Women's Foundation would disagree with you. He had a restraining order issued against him. Look, McCarney isn't my first choice but I like him better than some of the other names floating around out there. But don't pretend like his character and past are head and shoulders above Leavitt or Fran or any other candidate with "baggage" - domestic abuse is pretty serious in my book. And, apparently, physical assaults run in the family - Dan McCarney's Daughter Charged With Assaulting a Police Officer
  21. You must not follow my posts very closely. Otherwise, you'd realize that Canales wasn't the point of my post. I find it ironic that so many of our candidates not only have a Hayden Fry connection, but also a USF connection. I think you'd agree that the coaching hierarchy is the HC, followed by the two coordinators. The former HC, as well as the OC and DC, from USF are available...yet we're listing the D-Line coach as our favorite. Besides, there are several coaches with 12+ years HC experience at the FBS level that I'd pass on for the handful that should be at the top of our list.
  22. I don't know, I think I'm going to side with Green Dozer on this one. If Leavitt's incident is eliminating him from consideration, how can McCarney's simply be ignored? It was 16 years ago you say....well, Leavitt was HC for 13 years with only one accusation. From USAToday.com So the former USF HC isn't good enough for UNT, but his former OC and former D-Line Coach (McCarney 2007) are?
  23. 2010 Rivals.com coaching carousel While the article is recent (11/17/10), the information isn't. However, they usually update it quite frequently during the college coaches firing season.
  24. I bet you're one of those guys who believes the magic bullet theory because it was in the Warren Commission's report?
