I agree with that. I agree with this too, as long as it's an athletic "dual-threat" QB. I don't see a kid like Dorman having enough speed to play WR or DB, TE maybe.
-
I think that's an understatement. Unlike McNulty, his label of pro-style QB seems to be right on target. Fortunately, he appears to have a quick release and a cannon for an arm.

It's true we definitely have needs at other positions, but with our current QB situation and lack of experience and depth at the position, I wouldn't be surprised if we sign another one, or even two QBs. Of course, it will be largely dependent on the quality of the prospect. I'd love to get Stevie Weatherford, but Dorman and McNulty are also intriguing. At least one of the HS kids would be redshirted. I wouldn't count on Tune getting a medical redshirt. Thompson has started all of one game at QB and, while Baine filled in admirably last year, I'm not convinced he's a full-time starter. Teegarden wasn't even recruited to play QB. I think if we learned anything from last year, it's that we should have three QBs that are legitimately capable of starting at any given time.

Lone Oak Fan Saying Cooper Jones Committed
gangrene replied to jtm0097's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Yes, good find jtm. I was on smoaky.com just this morning and didn't find that nugget. Vito owes you a beer for enabling him to scoop Phillips! -
I agree he's flying under the radar, but I'm not sure why. If I had to guess, I'd say it's because he only had one year to showcase his QB skills and didn't compile stellar passing stats. Still, he replaced a 2009 Rivals top 250 player in A.J. Derby and the team didn't seem to miss a beat. He's also very athletic, having played CB in 2009 as well as basketball and track. Oh, and he was also the punter. In fact, FWIW he was named both player of the year and punter of the year in Mississippi Division of the MVC. BTW, he is listed on Scout - I just didn't include that profile in the original post because it doesn't contain much info. Here's a blurb from the Iowa City Press-Citizen blog on his basketball team: I'm not sure what he led the state in - surely not points or rebounds? Now, obviously earning accolades in Iowa carry far less weight that they would in a state like Texas, California or Florida, but I am interested.

Stevie Dorman- pro-style QB, 6'4", 215 lbs, 4.8 40, Somerset HS, TX - interested in UNLV, BYU and North Texas ESPN/Scouts Inc rating - 2 stars/72 No reported offers Played for Division 3-A, Somerset, and led to them a 10-3 record and third round of the state playoffs. Passed for 2,633 with 31 TDs and 8 INTs and rushed for an additional 5 TDs and 143 yards (I think he got about half of those on the second highlight in the video below). His career HS passing total of 8,619 yards surpassed his more famous uncles - former NFL quarterbacks Ty and Koy Detmer - Ty Detmer had 8,006 yards at Southwest High, while Koy Detmer threw for 8,221 at Mission High. Interesting footnote, his top WR, Jacob Hillyer (#18 in the video below) just committed to Iowa on 12/19.

Andrew McNulty - pro-style QB from Iowa City, Iowa. He is interested in Indiana, Iowa and North Texas, with the only known offer from North Texas. His profile can also be found on the recruiting blog for the QB position. Iowa City HS went undefeated and won the 4-A (highest classification in Iowa) state title in 2009 behind the leadership of QB, A.J. Derby, a 2009 Army All-American and Rivals 4 star recruit who redshirted at Iowa this season. While McNulty backed up Derby his junior season, leaving him with just one year of experience as a starting QB, he was also a starting DB on the 2009 team. McNulty was able to lead the Little Hawks (yes, that's their name) back to the 4-A state title game this year, but they came up short in their bid for back-to-back undefeated season and state titles, losing to Dowling Catholic, 38-31 in overtime of the championship game. He's listed as a "pro-style" QB but rushed for 1,137 yards and 14 TDs (the leading RB had 1,350 rushing yards and 21 TDs), while passing for an additional 1,438 and 12 TDs (5 INTs). Those stats would seem to indicate a dual-threat QB to me. McNulty is very interested in going to Iowa too, but would have to compete with Derby and 2011 verbal commit Jake Rudock - a Rivals 3 star prospect and ranked 29th best pro-style QB in the nation. In addition, Iowa has a standing offer with the 2011 class 12th ranked pro-style QB in the nation, per Rivals, and looks to have five QBs, including Derby, returning next season. However, this year's starter Ricky Stanzi will graduate.

Ah...who would have wanted Harbaugh anyway?? He just used Stanford as a stepping stone to get to Michigan!! (Yes, I'm being facetious.)

True and Lance Pavlas was at A&M even longer it seems. However, if my memory is correct, RF was injured in the first quarter of the first game of the season. I actually attended that game at the Cotton Bowl, I believe. I don't recall the details but I do remember thinking how awful it was for him to suffer a season-ending injury in the first game of the season.

Aside from being the coach's son, I never understood the negativity that was directed toward Riley and I usually defended him from criticism. That said, I'm truly disappointed in him for this decision and my admiration of Daniel Meager was just elevated. At any rate, I wish Riley well. Maybe he'll get to play against Bo Levi Mitchell?

He now shows to have a UNT offer on his Rivals profile.

Brent Osborn - pro-style QB, 6'4", 210 lbs, 4.74 40, Northwest JUCO, Senatobia, MS - interested in Akron, Arkansas, Arkansas State, Mississippi, Murray State, North Texas, Temple, Tennessee-Martin, Texas State and UAB. Offers from Murray State and Tennessee-Martin (Visits UNT 12-17-10)

I have to laugh at this. I hope I live long enough to see us get "stone-walled" for a BCS bowl berth. That alone would far exceed my wildest dreams for North Texas football. Only 10 teams play in BCS bowls each year and the only way we'd ever be in a position to play in a BCS bowl game would be to go undefeated, with victories over at least one (but probably two) top 10 team(s) and end the regular season ranked in the top 5. For now....I'd be ecstatic to finish a season in the top 25.

Other signings that may be of interest: WR Corey Johnson - Troy Midyear - Garden City (His brother, Ronald Johnson, plays at USC.) How many FBS schools can claim TWO on-campus football stadiums???!!! -
Troy Philips is reporting that he committed prior to McCarney's hiring, but has yet to contact McCarney to confirm the offer is still good. Here's Troy's free article. Prep coach says massive OT took UNT up on offer By Troy Phillips, TheMeanGreenReport.com Publisher

I didn't see this posted anywhere yet - footballscoop.com North Texas: As we reported a week ago, Florida offensive grad assistant Justin Frye accepted the offensive line job on Dan McCarney's staff. Justin Frye bio

I just added a profile for Blinn JUCO LB, Princeton Jackson, under the positions thread. He's the first Rivals four-star prospect interested in UNT this year. However, he currently only has offers from FCS schools; South Carolina State and Southeastern Louisiana. After viewing his 2009 and 2010 highlights, I have a few observations. He's a good blitzer and has nice closing speed (looks to be faster than his reported 4.6 40). He's a big hitter and he's good at reading the plays based on the blocking schemes, but he seems a bit lost in pass coverage at times. Still he tends to read the QB's eyes and makes the play in zone coverage. Oh, and he's a bit of a celebrator. 2010 highlights: 2009 highlights:

Brent Osborn, hometown Valley, Alabama 2010 RS freshman at NW MS JUCO 2009 Georgia Southern Redshirted Left GSU last spring after spring training and because of a coaching change and GSU that resulted in them utilizing a spread triple option. He was rated 2 stars and ranked #135 best QB in the nation by Scout.com his senior season at Valley HS, Alabama, where he had offers from UAB and Georgia Southern. He led the Northwest Community College Rangers to a 9-1 record (undefeated regular season) and top 5 NJCAA ranking in 2010. For the season, he completed 61.4% of his passes (181-295) and threw for 18 TDs, but he also had 12 interceptions and one fumble for the year. He looks to be a true pocket passer who's not afraid to take a hit, but his quick release enabled him to get through the season with only 7 sacks. He has good size at 6'4" and 210 lbs but should probably add about 10-15 lbs to play at the FBS level. Here are some highlights from this season at Northwest, MS JUCO I'm told Brent has been offered by UNT and will be taking a visit to Denton this weekend. At this time, his decision appears to be between UNT and Murray State.

If Offered, Should We Join The Mountain West Conference?
gangrene replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
#1. Southwest doesn't fly into DFW. #2. I doubt forcing the conference commissioner to fly Southwest would impress him too much. #3. I don't like Southwest (if you couldn't tell).
